Would not only recommend to friends (already have in fact) but could see using it in a class on problem solving.
I loved the beautiful illustrations. I loved Argyle's persistence and then creativity in finding a solution to what to play on a windy day. I loved how his solution benefited others at the end. I loved how his mother handled his being upset. I even loved his outcries of dismay and discouragement. Definitely a winner for me....more

A retelling of Noah's Ark focusing on the animals. First, it's their response when it rains and then about all of the good and bad they get up to on the ark itself. Finally, they are able to find a new home all together.
The illustrations are clearly the star here. They are charming and cute. Dubuc focuses on about 12 different types of animals but does them well. The coloring is soft and fits with the pictures. The story is fine. A little long for a child's story but still has it's strong points. I'd read this one to my kids....more

Theo wants to surprise her explorer Grandfather with something special for his birthday. But what to get him? She decides to take him on an adventure! Theo and her Poppa explore the town, beach, and a new restaurant together while gathering mementos to add to his memory chest.
The story was fun and I liked it much more than the illustrations. I thought the illustrations were well done and fit with the story but I just didn't care much for them. Overall, a sweet story about the adventures that can be had right in your own backyard. Great to encourage kids to explore their own communities and make special memories with family....more

The story begins with our MC taking a pie through the woods to grandma's house. Sound familiar? She is met though, not with a big, bad wolf, but instead stumbles upon a house in the woods where a menagerie of creatures is having tea. The animals all greet her kindly and help her fix up the pie she'd ruined before escorting her to her grandmother's. (My favorite scene is all of them walking through the woods together.)
The black and white drawings are slightly fuzzy which helps enhance the dreamlike atmosphere of the story. Children will definitely enjoy this twist on an old tale and will like looking at the various animals. Definitely recommend for snowy days.

What a fun little book! Children who enjoy cars will love reading and re-reading this story. There's not much of a plot per se but it is very cute. The rhyme scheme is nice, making it easy to read and it talks about a variety of different cars. Kids will love seeing the cars, the different animals driving them, the bold bright colors, and the fun little additions (such as the toys littering the side of the road). For fun and lots of visual interest, this one is a win in my book....more

Joseph's Big Ride is perfect for elementary age children. There are so many things to love about it. The lesson of appreciating what you have, doing for others, making friends, working hard, and more. I could even see using it with older students to teach various literary terms. The artwork is brilliant as well. Visually interesting, bold, unique and beautiful it fits the tone and mood of the book perfectly. Overall, a wonderful story that will have you rooting for Joseph and his dream of riding a bicycle....more

What a curious and strange story this is! Rosie is born to a family of ravens. She quickly learns that she is different than her parents and siblings. While this bothers her at first, and she tries to become like them, she soon realizes that it's okay to be herself. Her family loves and accepts her for who she is and her special-ness actually comes in handy to them later in the story.
I'm not sure I really liked the story overall but the message was nice and the pictures beautiful and visually interesting. I'd say this one is worth your time....more

What a fun book! Simon in the Land of Chalk Drawings features 4 different stories of Simon, an imaginative child whose chalk drawings come to life in a special world on the other side of a fence.
In the title story, Simon learns that the drawings he creates on his chalkboard at home, come alive in their own world. He learns the importance of finishing things in a fun and creative way. The second tale is Simon and the Chalk Soldiers in which Simon creates a chalk army and then has to figure out how to help the people of chalk land cope with these invaders. Simon and the Moon Rocket includes Simon and his first chalk person riding to the moon in a rocket where they find it populated by mathematical sums who want to take over chalk land! I think this was probably my favorite of the 4 because of the creativity and the style choices in it. I also really liked Simon's solution to the sun's loneliness. The final story is Simon and the Dinosaur. Pretty self explanatory there but with a couple interesting twists.
The style is very unique and enjoyable. It had a very Schoolhouse Rock kind of feel to it. I also really liked the use of color and black and white.
I think kids would enjoy these stories. Did they always make sense? No. But stories created by kids rarely do. The joy is in the fun and the imagination. ...more

Harry and Walter are the best of friends, despite their age difference of 88 years. This sweet story follows all of fun times they have together before Harry moves away. Harry then has to cope with the change that has come into his life and what things are like now without Walter.
I thought this was a sweet little story. I liked the caring relationship between Harry and Walter and it was refreshing to see someone elderly in a story who was not related to the child. This is a wonderful way to show children that we can all have important people in our lives, even if their not related by blood. Walter and Harry demonstrate the best qualities of a friendship and I would certainly recommend this book to my kiddos....more
