continuing my mission to read more graphic novels.
super adorable, aesthetically pleasing art (i mean that cover is so lovely), but the story is a bit continuing my mission to read more graphic novels.
super adorable, aesthetically pleasing art (i mean that cover is so lovely), but the story is a bit lackluster, to be honest. i like the aspect of adjusting to being in a new place and adapting and making new friends and all of that, i like the slice of life nature of the story. but i don’t like the author’s choice to have the main character engage in mean girl behavior (she kicks a girl out of the friend group for hugging the boy she likes). it’s 2024, aren’t we beyond that? i’m assuming there is a sequel planned or at least intended, given how this book ends in the middle of the story with literally nothing wrapped up. i hope all the focus on the main character’s painful periods (another part of the book that i like) is leading to a conversation about, if not a diagnosis of, endometriosis. or even any other medical reason, because pain like that isn’t normal. i’m also hoping for something to come of the comment about one of the girls having a crush on the main character. everything is better with queer rep. idk, given how this ended feeling like it’s unfinished, it’s hard to pin down how i feel about it. i guess three stars will have to do.

who knew a murder romance could have me giggling, smiling, and kicking my feet so much. the characters are so very endearing, the romance is swoon-worwho knew a murder romance could have me giggling, smiling, and kicking my feet so much. the characters are so very endearing, the romance is swoon-worthy, the banter and humor are excellent, it’s at times very quiet and slow building then at other times fast paced with plenty of action, there is a precious giant wolf dog puppy who i was so worried was going to die but thankfully didn’t, there isn’t a third act breakup or any miscommunication driven conflict!!!
i’m just living for it. i was instantly charmed by this book. this is exactly what i want out of a mafia/assassin/hitman/etc. romance. he’s a ruthless killer who is soft as fuck for one woman who stumbles into his murder shenanigans. those murdery romances where the dude is a controlling borderline misogynistic alpha or even a full-fledged stalker/abuser??? jail!!!!! i want bad men who are cinnamon rolls for the women they love. and this book is that and then some. we stan. the male lead? 10/10, no notes.
that said, i was sooooo tempted to give this four stars because of the marriage and kids ending; not only do i hate them in general and don’t think that should be the ending of every romance, i find them especially unnecessary and forced in certain kinds of romances (for example, murder romances such as this one or smutty novellas). but i can just pretend the last two or three chapters didn’t happen lmao aside from the marriage and baby, it was all kind of “this happened and then this happened” telling rather than showing anyways, so it wouldn’t be a loss to just ignore them.

jimmy’s story about team hazing turning into assault was okay. but i love emma’s story, getting her environmental grove back and recovering from her ejimmy’s story about team hazing turning into assault was okay. but i love emma’s story, getting her environmental grove back and recovering from her eating disorder. seeing her with peter, in recovery, and getting back into knitting just made me want to rewatch “here comes your man,” which i used to watch all the time on my ipod touch over a decade ago. semma for life!!!! could’ve been a five star if it weren’t for the art style not being my favorite because it doesn’t really resemble the characters.
why did i never know about these degrassi graphic novels???? ellie is being sexually harassed and j.t. is addicted to masturbating. ya gotta love the why did i never know about these degrassi graphic novels???? ellie is being sexually harassed and j.t. is addicted to masturbating. ya gotta love the duality of degrassi. i actually really loved this. probably because i’m an ellie girlie at heart. the art is better than i was expecting, with enough actor likeness to know who everyone is without further context. i loved seeing paige and alex help ellie recognize and respond to sexual harassment. the little moments spinner had were also delightful. it just makes me want to rewatch these seasons (lately i’ve been rewatching mid-season 11 to mid-season 12, stopping before “bittersweet symphony” because reasons) or read fanfiction.

first, things i like: the baseball (surprisingly, because i could not care less about sports), the cute art, the story starting in freshman year and ending with graduation, the one good supportive adult, and the friendship between jonah and sophie.
while i respect that every author has a story they personally want or need to tell, i’m just past wanting to consume media with such a heavy presence of queerphobia and misogyny. stories about queer people or women just experiencing nonstop hate, bullying, and mistreatment just are not interesting or fun to me. i knew there would queerphobia in this book, but it was just a bit more than i was expecting. (it also makes sense to hear that the author started writing the story in 2018, because i could kind of feel it.)
i wish there had been some solidarity between jonah and amelia, due to both being bullied and dismissed by the team. but jonah basically ignored her, was happy to be “accepted” by the team and have the coach’s support and attention, and got to play with zero experience while she had experience but never even left the bench. and then he had the nerve to be surprised when she quit the team. it just would’ve been nice to see him be a source of support for her, given how many times she brought up being sidelined, bullied, and the team not being true friends to him. she just deserved so much better.
this also has the classic “out character chooses to date a closeted character and then gets mad when they can’t do things publicly as a couple” trope. even when they have a conversation about it and jonah tells dustin it wasn’t cool that he went for pda at a party after he told him he wasn’t ready for that, it turned into “i guess we both owe an apology” but uh. what did jonah do? he wasn’t “ashamed” of dustin, he made it clear he wasn’t out and wasn’t ready for couple-y things, and dustin chose to date him anyways?? stop pairing closeted and out characters if you’re just going to vilify the closeted character for....being closeted....more
a sweet middle grade graphic novel about a kid with ocd/intrusive thoughts finding acceptance and healing through an inclusive new ttrpg friend group.a sweet middle grade graphic novel about a kid with ocd/intrusive thoughts finding acceptance and healing through an inclusive new ttrpg friend group. it could’ve been a little more fleshed out, as the mother and sister have pretty sudden turnarounds and there isn’t much in terms of medication or coping techniques. and i’m not a fan of fiction within fiction, so i didn’t care for the fantasy scenes of their game.

some people take issue with the romance, because they’ve only known each other for a day, but for me, it’s akin to when you’re a kid and meet someone and have something in common or share a moment and instantly become best friends. they bond over their shows and fanart/fanfic and being queer and caring about representation and they just hit it off. they aren’t claiming to be in love or anything, so literally who cares lmao
