Natasha Preston had me going and hooked from page one. I thought; wow, how perfect that a story built around and takes place right before Halloween, was going to be perfect.....then she totalled it at the very end with a one word....and VERY stupid one at that; ending. SO DUMB! Why would she do that? Maybe she had read too much Stephen King. Skip it. Nothing new here. Too bad too, really. I was LOVING this 'body piling up' book reminiscent of "He Knows You're Alone" trope.....NOT!

I think it would have been better if I had read a physical copy instead.
So, when this had popped up on my Goodreads page, I thought I would look the audiobook up on my Everand account because the subject and basis of the story really interested me. The Salem Witches.
Having never read this author before I quickly got into the characters of George, his wife Giselle and their young daughter Melissa and his obsession with the town of Salem and his not knowing why.
The story takes off and the ending was great with a twist thrown at me that I did not see coming. Now, this audiobook would have gotten a full 5 star review BUT the authors favorite words to USE over and over, and over and over again were: "he said" or "she said" and it just became so annoying with the two narrators and the way they would change their voices and whatnot, that it ruined the experience (one of which COULD have been an incredibly creepy tale of witches and voodoo) of this story of a 50 year old father and husband and the town of Salem Massachusetts and the history of witchcraft. I wished now that I would have read it instead of listened to it.
Would still recommend, but just wanted to let you know how badly it was narrated. 4 Stars...more

Mrs. Ganush (if you do NOT know who she is, look her up!) has NOTHING on Old Hag Mrs. Downes! This book ruined Halloween for me forever, and then terrified me over and over again right up until the last devastating page! Highly recommended for anyone who loves Halloween night, and a great scary horror tale.....but be ready this deals with losing a small child.
Bill and Dorothy Steward are losing their 3 year old son to cancer. If that is not bad enough he passes on Halloween night. A year later. Halloween Night. Bill witnesses a sight that he is NOT soon to ever forget.....an infant being held upside down by its ankle by a cult member who is getting ready to sacrifice it. What Bill does is something that will forever stay in my mind and will change Halloween for me for a Lonnnnnggggg time! This begins the horror novel "Billys Experiment" by Jonathan Dunne. Thanks for scaring the shit out of me AGAIN in such a completely different way than I have ever been scared before. Clever and phenomenal writer, and his technique for writing horror and narrating his own books are the BEST. 5 SCREAMS all the way!...more

And I LOVED this horror filled ghost story that I will never hear 'MaMa' ever the same way again!!
When Molly Greene and her two young daughters have to move from Dublin Ireland, to the country after she has to close her Michelin Award winning restaurant due to the Covid 19 pandemic, she has no idea what she is getting herself into.
If the accident was not the worst thing to happen to the Greenes, then surely the move to the 200 year plus 'Farmhouse' would be, but what is in it with them?
This audiobook was narrated to perfection by the author Jonathan Dunne; the author himself; and that is the BEST type of audiobooks out there IMO. This was a sheer terror, and horror filled ghost story that blew me away right up till the VERY LAST page! When you have read over 53 years, the amount of horror I have I always think is this one going to be any different? Wow, get ready to meet Creepy Baby, and The Squatter!!

Though this review below waWith this addendum being added on 2/29/2024 I have recently watched this movie, AND again just now finished the audiobook. Though this review below was how I felt when I first read it, this new add on is how I feel now about this 'Coming of Age Horror' set in the 1960's.
Pete McCormick and his friends have lived their entire live in this boring town with the rumors floating around about of a scary, pumpkin faced tall boy who goes by the name of Sawtooth Jack, the October Boy and many others. And he knows that on every Halloween the towns teenaged boys who reach the age of 16 are able to grab their ballpeen hammers, their shovels, and pitchforks and seek to take the October Boy down before he makes it to the towns Church before the bell tower strikes 12. So what happends if he makes it....what if he doesn't make it? All will come out in this short (less than 200) 2006 book by Norman Partridge. This wond the Bram Stoker award for that year, and though I though it did NOT deserve it....I now think of this as another 'Coming of Age Horror Classic'. Don't read it....LISTEN to it or better yet watch the movie AFTER listening to it. It is quite the horror story.
Loved this read. 5 Screaming Jacks! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
STILL boring! Watch the movie 'Pumpkinhead' this is basically trying to be a story around the same type of character. Skip It!
So, a couple years back this book was ALL the rage......why? I will still NEVER know! With this being the 2nd, YES the 2nd time listening to it instead of reading it, I still could care less about these dumb people.!!
So, the MC in this story; Patrick wants to move out of his boring ass, small midwestern town that he lives in. So what is holding him back? The boy with the pumpkin head that lives in the cornfield!! WOW this is sure an unusual story........ most def. NOT!! This wanna be "Pumpkin Head" story was well written, but it is so 'old and used up' that you cannot care about any of the characters that are so stupid to think they are going to win and take 'The October Boy with the machete' down is just lame, tiring. So what? Who cares? I didn't. Will be giving this one away in a giveaway on the channel soon. HUGE disappointment! What a let down of the trilogy!
With what could have been the best of these 3 YA halloween set books, this turned out to be the HUGE disappointment! What a let down of the trilogy!
With what could have been the best of these 3 YA halloween set books, this turned out to be the worst of them all! Take "Halloween III: Season of The Witch" and mix it with "Saturday Night Fever" and you get Unmasked. This started out so great with 14 year old 'Mare' being a special effects make up wiz, and when she creates her first silicone full face 'gil man' mask that she actually gives a name "Winston", he gets stolen and creates havoc at the school Halloween party.
At the half way mark....this became the most stupid and silly dumb ending to the trilogy. Skip it. Cannot recommend this clunker.

So SO boring, non scary and just stupid story about a year round Walk Thru Haunt in Orlando Florida, and one night an employee is really dead. So fucking what!
This is the dumbest, and most NON scary book ever.....and the biggest horror in this story, is the fact that it was even labeled Horror in the first place.

So William is back in this second book and he is looking for his lost sister.....will he be successful in finding her? Wow, Arcane introduces the reader into so so many more scary situations in this book than in the first one. Vampires, haunted and deadly amusement park dark house rides, (which I LOVE D THIs ONE!), an uncle losing his most beloved Vintage and beautiful Movie House, and we cannot forget about the Ghost Bride that lives in the atttic!
These books have brought to life all 999 of the scary but oh, so beautiful intheir own ways, that we love to be scared by everytime that we ride the Haunted Mansion ride at the Disney Parks! You will love reading along and being scared too. This 2nd book has more horrific and scary scenes.....read first before reading or letting small children read this one. I LOVED this! Cannot wait to start the 3rd book!

After losing the year before to Patricia, the rich and snotty girl at his school, after she CHEATED him out of 1st place! Kevin is a boy of two fathers, and I loved the way Alexander once again handled having gay characters in the writing. As I always say; I really do not know what makes a book be labeled as YA but this one scared me at multiple times......come on, can you imagine being terrorized by real life Mannequins and hell bent for revenge dead Brides!!!? Loved this book. Would recommend to anyone who loves a great Halloween themed ghost story.

What her boyfriend does not know is that Erin has a connection with the most disturbing Halloween 'Funhouse', and let me tell you.......this is NOT that kind of Funhouse!!!

The town of Blackwood Vermont has an urban legend....doesn't the town or city where you live? The story of Benny Rose, the Cannibal King is one that you are not soon to ever forget.
Gabrielle is the new girl in town, and she has just moved in with her Grandmother who lives in a seniour citizen community, where everyone sticks to their own business. And not a one of them talk or speaks of Benny Rose. Now this is a town where Halloween does not end at 12 midnight....no it does not. And when the high school mean girls Sierra, and Desiree plan a slumber party on Halloween night with their boyfriends secretly involved, they plan Halloween prank to scare the shit out of Gabrielle. And man oh, man does it work......but is Benny Rose real or was it all a towns way of scaring the local kids?
The graphic and extreme gore in this short and quickly to scare book was SO well written by Piper that I had no idea where it was going to go. Warnings: Extreme scenes of cannibalism of kids, sexual dismemberment and graphic scenes of gore. I LOVED it! I LOVED this tale of Alice and Jack. Just EXPERIENCE it!
Storyville....yes, it sounds like that Perfect of Perfect places to live. Well that is exactly where this story takes place, and it is a small town and story that you are not soon to forget.....that is if you are 'Young At Heart' get ready to meet Jack and Alice.
Jack Bristol is a 10 year old only child who loves to dream and imagine that he flies the out boudaries of space, yes, Jack has an imagination that only a child could have. Alice Skylar is his best friends, and she goes along with Jack on his adventures as they fire pink lasers at ships flying by the top of which ever tree they have decided to climb this day. They first meet in Kindergarten and now they are in the fourth grade. And it is a time that 'Jacky Boy' just wants to go away....yes, he hates school and anything to do with it; especially arithmetic.
Jack knows what it is like to lose a parent, yes he lost his mother when he was young, and always had so many questions that he wanted to ask her, and never got the chance to.
Jack is always escaping reality and the daily grinds of having to go to school, he is in the 4th grade, and it has never been a thing that Jack was ever good at. Alice Skylar is the complete opposite of Jack....she LOVES school, learning and history and math; and she is great at it. That is why these two kids are perfect for each other as best friends. During the Summer between 4th and 5th grade the both experience a day of bullying by their local bullies; Tork McGuckin and his randy band of Rebel Survivors, and it puts a damper on their day of 'fighting pirates, and spaceships' with bruises and wounds that they know they will recover from. As they are going 'back to the Castle' Jack asks Alice if she believes in Heaven, and God, and other questions, making Alice think before she answers them.
Jacks father Philip is a man who wants to be the most perfect of perfect fathers as he raises Jack by himself on the wages of the local clock maker and cobbler. Alice's parents are the type of parents that everyone always knew belonging to one of our best friends....the perfect ones.
As the school year is going into the fall and holiday season this is when the book really took me in that time machine back to my childhood and growing up in the 4th grade in 1971, and THIS is where i started to relive childhood. Both Jack and Alice reminded me so much of myself and my childhood best friend Starla Todd. Author Brandon Berntson writes with all that imagination and memories of his own childhood and somehow turns them around to be YOUR memories all over again....and that is a gift to be able to do.
Castle Juliet is a book that I will quote, and relive over and over again until I grow old, and already being 61 years old.....I cannot wait to go back to Storyville and to visit Jack and Alice again. This is just the most wonderful book of what it REALLY is like to be a child, and to live in a time no longer lived....the time of beauty, crime free, and innocence; and what it was like to really love a best friend.

So, it has been 25+ plus years since Max, Dani and Allison woke, then battled and sent them back to hell, yes, we are talking about Winifred, and her two sisters Mary, and Sarah. The Sanderson witches! And we are now 25 years later and Allison and Max's 17 year old daughter Poppy is read to do it all over again. This second story in the book was a little over 320 pages long and once you open it, be ready to jet around on your tore up brooms flipping the pages and laughing the whole time you are doing it. All of your favorite characters from Hocus Pocus are here as well as the new teens and their enemies. Instead of talking cats....we have the sweetest and sometimes hilarious talking dog; Isabella. Thackery Binx and his sister Emily are back too! But the best twists and unknown facts about the witches are exposed and told to us in a way that was so much fun, how can you NOT have a blast with this one?
With Halloween falling this year with the biggest Bloodmoon in forever the Sanderson's come back to Salem ready to wreck havoc on the town, and get revenge on Max, Dani and Allison for what they did 25 years earlier...... Will it go as planned, or will it become the ordeal to end all ordeals and battles? Does Poppy get her parents back before 12 Midnight on Halloween, do the witches with this time? Check out 'Hocus Pocus & The All New Sequel' by Disney Press. And so what....it is YA, but is it?
Remember when you walked into the doors of Disneyland's Haunted Mansion? I do, and it was 1969, the first summer it was open, and I was scared out of Remember when you walked into the doors of Disneyland's Haunted Mansion? I do, and it was 1969, the first summer it was open, and I was scared out of my Mind! Let's go back to this classic and get ready to tell your story to Amicus Arcane.....ready?
First off, this book is so beautiful in its printed gory, uh, Glory! If you can, make sure you get this first edition as there are the most gorgeous title pages and illustrations inside. 4 middle grade school kids, all completely different than the other become friends through their love of anything scary and being scared! Yes, they ar Horror Nerds! Not to say that anyone who loves horror is a nerd, but when you live, LOVE and continuously have a scary book in your hand.....that is a Horror Nerd. Willa, being the only girl in this group stood out so well, that she reminded me of my best childhood friend Starla, who was the 'Corruptor' who got me hooked on reading scary books! She was my favorite in this first of 4 books about 'The Haunted Mansion'.
Willa, Tim, Noah and Steve are kids who have something in common, as I said above. Now when these 4 kids are 'invited should I say' to a big and scary mansion up on the hill, they are greeted and welcomed by the staff's own Librarian; Amicus Arcane; and he wants to tell them some scary stories. When one of the boys tells him that "I am the best at telling the scariest stories in our school" they realize they are being challenged.....and it is a challenge that you will not believe where and what it is. This book was narrated and told to YOU the Mortal Reader, and when he talks to you, the print is in the most attracting bold type......and he tries to warn you what is about to happen. Now this book is kind of told as 4 stories and they are all tied and connected to each of the kids....and it is done incredibly well. The way the author John Esposito takes you into the Haunted Mansion along with the kids on their first trip too, is so well written that you KNOW he took and spent weeks and hours studying this classic ride at Disneyland, because let me tell you is it PERFECT! The scares are well thrown at you and they are done in kind of a Creepshow meets Are You Afraid of the Dark, but do NOT let that make you not want to read it.....I loved it. I have already ordered the next 3 books in this series in this beautiful hard cover editions....I cannot wait to start the 2nd book, about Madame Leota! Remember; she is the floating head in the glass bowl in the Seance Room. See you soon.........and remember that this is the home of 999 ghostly spirits!

I JUST now finished in just over 2 hours, the audiobook version while working on an art piece......and absolutely LOVED this literature classic, by the one and only Ray Bradbury!! If you have also never read it....do NOT WAIT ANY LONGER! Here is 'The Halloween Tree'
Now, THIS is a Halloween Literature Classic!!! I still after just finishing this, cannot believe that I had never read this Halloween night tale of 8 young boys, who are best friends by the way decide to 'meet' before they go out for Tricks and Treats, when one of them does not show up....their friend 'Pipkin' also known as Pip. They meet at the local haunted house, (which EVERY single town in America) has one i think) on the outskirts of their smalltown, and they notice something that they have never seen before......an old and mysteriously strange, scary and yet beautiful tree; "the halloween tree". Now the scary old man that lives in this house which all the people talk and warn their kids about, is the man who will take these boys on a night's ride till Midnight around the entire globe and back 4000 years, and when he asks them: 'Why are you dressed as a witch; a Mummy; etc, etc you are ready for the ride of your life! Whether you believe in the wonders of childhood or not, Catholicism, Christianity, Buddhism, Wicca, or Dia De Los Muertos, or just nothing; but you do believe in best friends, love of a best friend, or even a childhood pet.....you MUST read this book. Now, back to this old haunted house and the man who lives there......his name is Carapace Clavicle Moundshroud. Now that is quite the mouthful, right? As he tells them that in order to find their friend 'Pip' they must put everything they know and leave their faith in his hands and be willing to go on this 'broom ride' around the globe and time, and believe; then they might be able to save their friend. With this book that was written in 1972 but it reads like it was released in the 50's, and the magic, fantasy and beauty of the 1000's of intricately and beautifully carved Jack O' Lanterns is a stunning image that I will never forget! With this being the 5th of October, this will annually be on my Halloween Season reading list EVERY year to come! Now i must find a beautiful hardcover copy to put on my bookshelf.

So, in St. Albans; Louisiana a house has sat for almost 40 years. It is owned by the Conway family, who are really that well liked in this town, and when 'Aunt Cora Conway' dies and leaves the house to her nephew, Ted and his wife Janet, their teenaged twins a boy and girl, and their 2 year old daughter Molly. Now this is a weird child!! Ted wants to turn it into an Inn.......but would anyone stay in a mansion that is supposed to have harbored much murder, and torture in it's days, and is HAUNTED!!? This is a haunted mansion book, but it is MUCH more than that.....it is a book about devil worship, demons possessing kids with horrifying results, church sacrifices of everything, and about the Conways. Ted is an alcoholic, and he and his wife were almost going to divorce when this situation comes up in their family......do they move it? Do they sell it? The book deals with and shows some of the most dark, and extremely graphic scenes of violence, and mutilation unlike has ever been in a Saul book....AND it takes place during Halloween in one part!!! I do not ever remember that in a Saul book. So, if you are into this kind of horror and disturbing sleep patterns, pick this one up! You won't regret it.....and do you really want to stay at Conway House? Hmmm?

But, when the 'Red Wave' finally hits Pine Deep.....get ready for gore upon gore! This is one incredible Vampire/werewolf series of horror novels! Maberry's best!
Video review to appear here soon.
So, with this book being the one that finally wraps up the Red Wave warned of 30 years ago, and finally Halloween DOES arrive to Pine Deep....but not with the most HORRIFIC slaughter of a small American town EVER in horror publishing. This book series seemed like it was so long that these 2 events were NEVER going to come....but when they did, omfg, it all paid off! If you like or love both Vampire, and Werewolf genres in horror....do NOT pass this series up. Incredibly scary, and sad all at the same time..... Trigger Warnings: Extreme racism, use of the N word, and graphic depictions of violence to infants, and small children....all in a Vampiric horror sort of way, however it could be upsetting to some readers.
Jeff Strand is one of those writers that is hit or miss with me, and this one was a HIT! Right in the eyeball of a 12 inch spider! Carnival clowns; Jaunty, Blue Head, Reginald the nice clown, Wagon, and Guffaw all lose their jobs and realize that they are forced to take jobs as the traveling Halloween Haunted House attraction 'Mountain Of Terror' and work the Scary Clown room just to survive and eat. BUT; 80 years ago, ancient and extremely poisonous 10 inch across spiders came to America aboard a cargo ship, stowing away, then hiding in a cave in the side of a mountain......readying to bust out in the year 2019 and take over a small town!!!.
Now, you are going to look at this title and think the obvious; OMFG, how stupid does this sound? Wrong! This book was so gory, creepy as hell and the clowns in this one are NOT the child eating clowns of 'that other clown book' was, but these are machine gun toting, and revenge and fight to survive good clowns, in SCARY makeup!! Now, with me being the worse of Coulrophobic AND Arachnophobic, this book did disturb and freak the shit out of me at times, however the clowns were not the problem, it was the horrific and fast moving Spiders puncturing, and scooping out peoples eyeballs, biting off their heads and arms and legs, then wrapping them in webs, and it just was a non stop ride into the best kind of Haunted House ride you will ever take! Get ready for 'Clowns Vs. Spiders' and just remember, it is not what you are expecting it to be! Enjoy!

And I learned oI learned so much about the small town of Anoka Minnesota from the 6 terrifying stories, in this horror packed short story collection! And I learned of beliefs and traditions from Shane Hawk about the Dakotan people that was very intriguing and thought provoking......
How do you review a book that is only 71 pages long without giving away too much? You just pick up the book yourself and read it! I was graciously sent a signed copy of this book from the author; Shane Hawk, however as with all my reviews, this did NOT effect the coutcome whatsoever of what I have to say about the book. This 'collection of Indigenous Horror' only has 6 stories, and the first one is less than 3 pages long.....BUT the stories in this book, will stay with me for a long long time; especially "Wounded", "Imitate" and 'Dead America". Wounded was my favorite in spot number 1, with Imitate a close 2nd, then Dead America. Wounded is about a book that a young man finds in his grandfathers shed after a death in the family, that will change his life forever......the book is ALIVE and bleeds! 'Imitate' actually made me tear up a bit, as it deals with love lost in a way that was all too shocking and very Creepily written that it stuck with me later in a dream I had last night. Yes, I read this book in less that 75 minutes, along with and 'Authors Notes' and 'Story Notes' which are at the end of the book and tells little spoilers about each of the stories in the book and where the basis for them came from, and explains a bit more of each story....DO NOT read these first! With Hawk being of Cheyenne and Italian descent; all the stories take place in the town of Anoka, and with indigenous characters....which I thought was so well done, and something very new to me. I also really enjoyed the story of 'Transfigured' which is a 'NOT YOUR AVERAGE' werewolf story that takes place during the Halloween night celebration in this town, which you all know....I LOVE anything that takes place during this time of year, and this was no exception! The chaos in this one was GREAT!! If you have never seen the cover of this book, check it out.....the image on the front is beautifully CREEPY as hell!!! If you love short horror fiction (something that I normally do not tend to read) pick up this quick little but highly frightening book!!
Thanks again to Shane Hawk for this book that I will treasure. ...more
