The rest 300+ pages are examples, 'hypothetical-s' and anecdotes. But I still think this is a good read. It's easy to follow, it builds intuition and it is structured properly (following chapters expand previous ones). Overall it's a nice short read that drives a lot of fundamental ideas home in a very relaxed and sometimes entertaining way. But the book is great at showing real-life application of basic stats knowledge. It is almost unique in this regard. Despite some examples are being silly, you can easily see how the stats modelling is widely applicable in real life.
Highly recommend for software engineers.
Note of warning though the coverage pretty much stops on normal distribution. I've picked this book to learn more about t-tests and t-distributions. But this topic is barely touched....more
As a book on JVM internals - it is one the best (if not the best) I've read. As a book on perf engineering - it's ok-ish but not great. I liked that it covers why benchmarks are hard and how to avoid getting garbage results, I just wish the book spent more time on this to drive points home. In the second part (right after chapter on threading) the book degrades a bit. The last chapters can be skimmed over.

Code examples are written in a very clean and clear pseudocode that makes reading it a joy (god I wish all code in my dev experience was as clean). Despite being "academic" I can't call it being dry, it has enough of illustrations and explanations that makes it a pretty entertaining.
This is definitely one of the best books on the topic that I've read. Overall it was a pleasant surprise. ...more
