Dieses Buch gefiel mir, zumindest in den ersten zwei Dritteln, erheblich besser als erwartet. Unsere Protagonistin Cordelia, genannt Red, ist alleine und zu Fuß (trotz Beinprothese) auf dem Weg zu ihrer 100 Meilen entfernten Großmutter. Im Verlauf der Geschichte erfährt man durch geschickt eingewobene Rückblenden, warum sie zu ihrer Großmutter will und wieso sie alleine unterwegs ist.
Im letzten Drittel sind mir dann aber leider einige Negativpunkte sauer aufgestossen. Insbesondere betriff das „künstliche Alien-Monster“. Das Vieh ist so unzureichend beschrieben, dass sich die Autorin anscheinend nicht länger als 2 Minuten Gedanken dazu gemacht hat. Dann die Milizen. In vermutlich allen Dystopie-Stories tauchen wohl irgendwann Milizen auf, die in der Regel nicht zu den Guten gehören. Warum die Milizen hier aber im 2-stündigen Abstand immer wieder einen Bereich durchsuchen, um Männer zu töten und Frauen und Kinder zu verschleppen, erschließt sich mir nicht und wird auch an keiner Stelle näher erklärt. Insgesamt sind die Figuren durchwegs stereotyp. Bei Red stört mich das gar nicht so, aber wenn alle so sind, wird es schon ein bisschen ermüdend. Und das Ende. Es ist wahnsinnig abrupt und zu einem klassischen Märchen fehlt nur noch der Abschlusssatz „Und dann lebten sie glücklich bis an ihr Lebensende“. Das ist dann doch ein bisschen unbefriedigend.
Trotz dieser Mängel hat mich das Buch gut unterhalten und ich vergebe 3,5 Sterne, die ich auf 3 abrunde.

I liked this book, at least the first two-thirds of it, much better than I expected. Our protagonist Cordelia, called Red, is alone and on foot (despite her prosthetic leg) on the way to her grandmother 100 miles away. In the course of the story, we learn through cleverly interwoven flashbacks why she wants to see her grandmother and why she is travelling alone.
In the last third, however, I was unfortunately annoyed by some negative points. Especially concerning the "artificial alien monster". The creature is so inadequately described that the author apparently didn't spend more than two minutes thinking about it. Then there are the militias. In probably all dystopian stories, militias appear at some point, and they are usually not the good guys. But why the militias here repeatedly search an area every two hours to kill men and abduct women and children is not clear to me and is not explained in any detail at any point. Overall, the characters are stereotypical throughout. That doesn't bother me so much with Red, but when everyone is like that, it gets a bit tiring. And the ending. It's incredibly abrupt and the only thing missing from a classic fairy tale is the final sentence "And then they lived happily ever after". This is a bit unsatisfying after all.
Despite these shortcomings, the book entertained me well and I give it 3.5 stars, which I round down to 3.

Ich habe mich nur zögerlich an dieses Buch herangetraut, zum einen weil die deutsche Ausgabe über 1000 Seiten hat, zum anderen wegen der zahlreichen nicht ganz so guten Bewertungen. Ich hätte mir jedoch keine Sorgen machen müssen. Die Tommyknockers sind ein echter King mit dem so typischen Kleinstadtvibe, auch wenn er diesmal mit seinen Protagonisten besonders gnadenlos umspringt. Das Buch hätte vielleicht auch gut 300 Seiten kürzer sein dürfen ohne an Gehalt zu verlieren, aber dennoch habe ich mich an keiner Stelle gelangweilt.
Es heißt ja, King habe das Buch am Höhepunkt seiner Alkoholsucht geschrieben. Wenn man liest wie meisterhaft und eindringlich er die Alkoholprobleme von Jim Gardener beschreibt, kann man keine Zweifel haben, dass er eigene Erlebnisse verarbeitet.
Manche Dinge klingen zwar ein bisschen weit hergeholt (z.B. (view spoiler)[der fliegende Colautomat oder die Sache mit den Tentakeln (hide spoiler)] aber im Großen und Ganzen konnte ich gut nachvollziehen, was passiert ist und wie es passiert ist.
In die Geschehnisse des Romans ist wie üblich bei King viel Fantasie geflossen. Mir gefiel auch gut wie er auf die klassischen Horror-Monster wie Vampire Werwölfe oder ähnliches verzichtet hat und einen Horror ganz anderer aber mindestens genauso grusliger Art erschaffen hat.
Ich schlage mich bei diesem Roman also auf die Seite der Fans und vergebe 4,5 Sterne, die ich aufrunde.

I was hesitant to read this book, firstly because the German edition has over 1000 pages, and secondly because of the numerous not-so-good reviews. However, I needn't have worried. The Tommyknockers is a true King with that typical small town vibe, even if this time he's particularly merciless with his protagonists. The book could have been a good 300 pages shorter without losing any of its content, but I never got bored.
It is said that King wrote the book at the height of his alcohol addiction. When you read how masterfully and hauntingly he describes Jim Gardener's drinking problems, there can be no doubt that he is processing his own experiences.
Some things sound a bit far-fetched (e.g. (view spoiler)[the flying coke machine or the issue with the tentacles (hide spoiler)] but overall I had a good understanding of what happened and how it happened.
As usual with King, a lot of imagination went into the events of the novel. I also liked how he left out the classic horror monsters like vampires, werewolves or the like and created a horror that was completely different but just as scary.
So I'm siding with the fans on this novel and giving it 4.5 stars, rounding up. ...more

Band 2 der Bobiverse-Reihe schließt nahtlos an den ersten Band an. Die Bobs werden zunehmend mehr und strömen aus ins All, um neue Heimatwelten für den Rest der Menschheit zu suchen, die es geschafft hat, ihren Planeten komplett unbewohnbar zu machen.
Die kurzen Kapitel werden jeweils aus der Ich-Perspektive eines Bob erzählt, wobei wir schon an einem Punkt sin, den ich schon im ersten Band schwierig fand. Wir haben immer mehr Bobs mit immer weniger einprägsamen Namen, die noch dazu alle mit derselben Stimme (im Sinne von mit dem selben sprachlichen Ausdruck) sprechen und für mich nur sehr, sehr schlecht auseinanderzuhalten waren.
Obwohl ich verschiedene Punkte interessant fand, so wie zum Beispiel die sozioökonomische Entwicklung einer Zivilisation oder auch die Frage, ob es sich für einen virtuellen Charakter anders anfühlt in einer Sonde oder einen Androiden hochgeladen zu werden, hat mich auch hier wieder der Schreibstil wenig begeistert. Das Buch liest sich wie ein Mix aus Unterstufen-Erlebnisaufsatz und Ergebnisprotokoll mit einem Schuss Tagebucheintrag.
Unterm Strich hat mich der Roman ganz gut unterhalten, wirklich gefesselt hat er mich jedoch nicht und ich werde die Reihe auch nicht weiter fortsetzen. Knapp 3 Sterne.

Volume 2 of the Bobiverse series follows on seamlessly from the first volume. The Bobs become more and more numerous and stream out into space in search of new home worlds for the rest of humanity, who have managed to make their planet completely uninhabitable.
The short chapters are each told from the first-person perspective of a Bob, whereby we are already at a point that I found difficult in the first volume. We have more and more Bobs with less and less memorable names, who all speak with the same voice (in the sense of using the same linguistic expression) and were very, very difficult for me to tell apart.
Although I found various points interesting, such as the socio-economic development of a civilisation or the question of whether it feels different for a virtual character to be uploaded into a probe or an android, once again the writing style didn't inspire me very much. The book reads like a mix of a lower school experience essay and a results report with a dash of diary entry.
All in all, the novel entertained me quite well, but it didn't really captivate me and I won't be continuing the series. Just under 3 stars.

Ich bin eine begeisterte Leserin phantastischer Literatur und kann mich sehr dafür begeistern, wenn Geschichten schräg und anders sind. Also habe ich dieses Buch heute Nachmittag mit zum Friseur genommen, um mir eine langwierige Farbbehandlung damit zu versüssen, und mich sehr darauf gefreut.
Tja, was soll ich sagen. Das Buch ist tatsächlich schräg und anders, aber leider nicht auf eine gute Weise bzw. nicht auf eine Weise, die mir gefallen würde. Ich konnte für die in der Geschichte geballt auftretenden Absurditäten keinerlei Bezugsrahmen ausmachen, aber das ist ja vermutlich gewollt. Ich stand vollkommen ratlos vor einer Anhäufung von Sätzen, deren Bedeutung ich nicht begriff (vielleicht gab es ja auch keine Bedeutung und das sollte alles nur seltsam wirken). Jedenfalls habe ich mich beim Friseur durch die ersten 100 Seiten gequält (aber nur weil ich nichts anderes zu Lesen dabei hatte) und dann frustriert aufgegeben.
Es gibt ja offenbar viele Leser, die das Buch toll finden, für mich fällt es jedoch leider in die Kategorie “gefällt mir überhaupt nicht”.

I'm an avid reader of fantastic literature and I get really excited when stories are weird and different. So I took this book to the hairdresser's this afternoon to sweeten up a lengthy color treatment and was really looking forward to it.
Well, what can I say. The book is indeed weird and different, but unfortunately not in a good way or in a way that I would like. I couldn't find any frame of reference for the absurdities concentrated in the story, but that's probably intentional. I was left completely perplexed by a pile of sentences whose meaning I didn't understand (perhaps there was no meaning and it was all just meant to seem strange). Anyway, I struggled through the first 100 pages at the hairdresser's (but only because I didn't have anything else to read with me) and then gave up in frustration.
There are obviously many readers who think the book is great, but for me it unfortunately falls into the category "I don't like it at all". ...more

Dieser Roman klang nach der Beschreibung genau nach meinem Beuteschema und in der Tat waren die einzelnen Komponenten auch genau mein Ding.
Als da wären: Eine irrsinnig phantasievolle Ausgestaltung zahlreicher Alien-Spezies, bei der auf dieso häufig vorkommenden Parallelen zu Hominiden verzichtet wurde. Reihenweise satirische Referenzen auf den ESC (European Song Contest) Ein ziemlich kritischer Blick auf die weniger positiven Aktivitäten des Homo Sapiens Eine Menge SciFi-Gedöns wie wurmlöcher, Zeitschleifen usw. Jede Menge Humor. Die Autorin weiß sich auszudrücken und macht von dieser Fähigkeit ausgiebig Gebrauch.
Da fragt man sich natürlich, wieso um Himmels Willen dieses Buch bei mir nur mit gerade mal knapp 2 Sternen punkten kann.
Der Grund ist, dass dieses Buch zu viel Glimmer und Glamour, zu viel schrille Charaktere, zu viele satirische SEitenhiebe, zu viel Slapstick-Humor,,,, schlicht gesagt zu viel von einfach allem hatte und nach den ersten paar Kapiteln bei mir nervöses Hirnzucken hervorgerufen hat.

From the description, this novel sounded exactly like my cup of tea, and indeed the individual components were right up my street.
Such as: An insanely imaginative fleshing out of numerous alien species, dispensing with the parallels to hominids that so often occur. A series of satirical references to the ESC (European Song Contest). A rather critical look at the less positive activities of Homo Sapiens A lot of sci-fi stuff like wormholes, time loops etc. Lots of humour. The author knows how to express herself and makes extensive use of this ability.
Of course, one wonders why on earth this book can only score hardly 2 stars with me.
The reason is that this book had too much glitter and glamour, too many shrill characters, too many satirical side-swipes, too much slapstick humour,,,, simply put, too much of everything and caused me to have nervous brain twitches after the first few chapters. ...more

Die Protagonistin Mahit Dzmare kommt als Botschafterin des unabhängigen Außenposten Lsel in das Zentrum des Teixcalaanichen Imperiums.
Lsel ist eine Bergbaustation, die Bevölkerung lebt also auf einer Raumstation. Ich hatte daher sofort eine zumindest grobe Vorstellung von den Lselanern und ihrer Kultur.
Teixcalaan ist nun aber ein ganz anderes Kaliber. Ich benötigte mehrere Dutzen Seiten, um überhaupt zu begreifen, was vor sich geht. Fast genauso lange dauerte es, bis mir klar wurde, dass es sich auch bei den Teixcalaanern um eine humanoide Bevölkerung handelt. Die Autorin entlässt uns also ohne jedes Vorwissen ins Imperium und wir als Leser müssen uns noch mühsamer als Mahit einen Bedeutungsrahmen erarbeiten. Ich finde grandios, wie die Autorin auf diese Weise den Eindruck des völlig Fremden vermittelt hat.
Sehr gefallen hat mir auch, dass sexuelle Präferenzen nicht mal eine Erwähnung wert sind, weil sie außerhalb der persönlichen Beziehung keine Rolle spielen und auf Teixcalaan das Geschlecht des Sexualpartners möglicherweise vollkommen unbedeutend ist.
Dafür, dass es in diesem Roman in erster Linie um Politik und Poesie geht, ist er bemerkenswert unterhaltsam. Der Autorin ist hier wirklich etwas Außergewöhnliches gelungen und das Buch ist die zahlreichen Buchpreisnominierungen, die es erhalten hat, auf jeden Fall wert.
Ich bin schon sehr gespannt auf Teil 2 der Reihe.

The protagonist Mahit Dzmare comes to the heart of the Teixcalaanichen Empire as the ambassador of the independent outpost Lsel.
Lsel is a mining station, so the population lives on a space station. So I immediately had at least a rough idea of the Lselans and their culture.
But Teixcalaan is a completely different caliber. It took me dozens of pages to even grasp what was going on. It took me almost as long to realize that the Teixcalaans are also a humanoid population. The author releases us into the empire without any prior knowledge and we as readers have to work out a meaning framework even more laboriously than Mahit. I think it's great how the author conveyed the impression of complete alienness in this way.
I also really liked the fact that sexual preferences aren't even worth mentioning because they don't play a role outside of the personal relationship and on Teixcalaan the gender of the sexual partner may not matter at all.
For a novel that is primarily about politics and poetry, it is remarkably entertaining. The author has really done something extraordinary here and the book is definitely worth the numerous book award nominations it has received.
I'm really looking forward to part 2 of the series.

Auch Band 5 der Killerbot-Romane hat mich gut unterhalten. Da es sich hier um einen Roman in voller Länge und nicht nur um eine Novella handelt, konnte der Plot etwas komplexer gestaltet warden.
Im Kern geht es wie bei den Vorgängerromanen um die SecUnit Killerbot, die zum einen versucht “ihre” Menschen zu beschützen und zum anderen zunehmend Verständnis für die menschliche Psyche entwickelt und die eigene Persönlichkeit weiterentwickelt.
Schön ist, dass sie in diesem Band dem fiesen Forschungsschiff Fifo wiederbegegnet, da mir dieser Charakter schon beim ersten Auftauchen extrem gut gefallen hat.
Ich muss zugeben das sim Prinzip jedesmal dasselbe Plotgerüst verwendet wird. Die Menschen von Killerbot geraten in Schwierigkeiten, Killerbot muss sie unter Aufwendung all ihrer Kräfte retten und am Schluss stehen sich alle ein bisschen nächer als am Anfang. Dennoch hat mit auch dieser Band wirklich gut gefallen.
Was mich gestört hat, lag wohl an der Übersetzung. Ich habe die deutsche Version des Romans gelesen. Mehrfach wurde beim Personalpronomen für Killerbot zwischen “sie” und “er” gewechselt. Ich vermute, dass im Englischen das neutral Pronomen “they” verwendet wurde. Was mich wirklich stark gestört hat, war die Wortschöpfung “Fakke”, das wohl dem englischen “fuck” entsprechen soll. Meines Erachtens würde beispielweise “verdammte Scheiße” erheblich normaler klingen als “verdammte Fakke”.
Obwohl diese Reihe es für nicht zum Highlight schafft, da auch hier immer wieder das ausgelutschte Trope bemüht wird, dass eine Maschine nur dann Perfektion errreicht, wenn sie menschlich wird, fühlte ich mich dennoch ausgezeichnet unterhalten und bewerte mit 4 Sternen.

Volume 5 of the Killerbot novels kept me entertained as much as the previous volumes. Since this is a full-length novel and not just a novella, the plot could be made a bit more complex.
As in the previous novels, the focus is on the SecUnit Murderbot, which on the one hand tries to protect “their” people and on the other hand increasingly develops an understanding of the human psyche and develops its own personality.
It's nice that they encounter the nasty research ship Fifo again in this volume, because I really liked this character when it first appeared.
I have to admit that in principle the same plot structure is used every time. The humans of Murderbot get into trouble, Murderbot has to use all their powers to save them and at the end everyone is a little closer to each other than at the beginning. Still, I really liked this volume too.
Although this series doesn't make it to be a highlight for me, since the well-worn trope is used here again and again that a machine only achieves perfection when it becomes human, I still felt excellently entertained and gave it a 4-star rating. ...more

We accompany Max on a couple of time jumps (one even into the future), fight against the evil guys from the future, meet Mary Stuart, see the Hanging Gardens and, most remarkably, herd together a flock of dodos.
I found this book truly entertaining and I also appreciated that it conveyed a bit of historical knowledge. I’m looking forward to continuing this series. ...more

Das war ein ziemlich merkwürdiges Buch.
Während der ersten Hälfte habe ich mehrfach in Erwägung gezogen, den Roman abzubrechen, weil er einfach nur wirr und langweilig war. Ab der Hälfte jedoch, als die ersten Morde auftreten, wurde es so richtig spannend. Natürlich hätte man eine sehr ähnliche Geschichte auch in einem eingeschneiten Herrenhaus stattfinden lassen können (dann jedoch ohne das ganze absurde Gedöns).
In der ersten Hälfte erfahren wir in einer ziemlich wirren und undurchsichtigen Darstellung von den neun Häusern, die alle von Nekromanten besiedelt sind und sich jeweils anscheinend auf einem anderen Planeten befinden. Warum das so ist und wieso zum Geier Nekromanten bleibt bis zum Ende des Buches unklar.
Ab der Hälfte des Buches fand ich die Mordgeschichten und die zugehörigen Ermittlungen echt spannend, wobei auch hier viel unklar bleibt (oder vielleicht auch einfach nur totaler Quatsch ist).
Was den Ausdruck betrifft, sollte die Autorin vielleicht noch ein bisschen üben. Ich denke da beispielsweise an “eine unglaublich blaue Bläue” oder an “mit einem unmusikalischen Gang”. Auch hätte es Gideon nicht geschadet nicht ständig so furchtbar rotzlöffelig zu sein.
Aber wie gesagt, die Mordgeschichte fand ich klasse und das Ende herzzerreißend.
Unterm Strich ergibtr das für mich 3 Sterne und zu meiner eigenen Überraschung den Wunsch, den zweiten Band zu lesen.

This was quite a strange book.
During the first half, I considered abandoning the novel several times because it was just confusing and boring. However, from the halfway point onwards, when the first murders occur, it became really exciting. Of course, a very similar story could have been set in a snowed-in manor house (but then without all the absurd fuss).
In the first half, we learn about the nine houses, all populated by necromancers and each apparently located on a different planet, in a rather confused and opaque presentation. Why this is the case and why the heck necromancers remains unclear until the end of the book.
From halfway through the book, I found the murder stories and the associated investigations really exciting, although a lot remains unclear here too (or maybe it's just total rubbish).
As far as expression is concerned, the author should perhaps practise a little more. I'm thinking, for example, of "an incredibly blue blueness" or "with an unmusical gait". It also wouldn't have done Gideon any harm not to be so terribly snotty all the time.
But as I said, I thought the murder story was great and the ending was heartbreaking.
The bottom line for me is 3 stars and, to my own surprise, the desire to read the second volume.

I found the idea of this alien race that is genderless most of the time really fascinating. Our protagonist Genly Ai does understand the concept of genderfluidity on the planet Gethen, but he can’t really digest it on an emotional level and still wants to categorize people as male or female. I have to admit that the same applies to me. But this situation leads to Genly thinking about the role of gender in his known societies and to understand that a female role is always connected to restrictions. At a certain point he becomes aware that he knows less about the women of his own race than about the aliens on Gethen.
A very intriguing idea was also that the Gethenians do no only temporarily adapt male or female gender, but that they don’t know which gender it will be. So a person can become a birthing mother as well as be a man fathering a child.
Ursula K. Le Guin describes how Genly Ai travels a long time through the bitterly cold iceworld just with a sledge and a tent. I thouroghly enjoyed this part of the novel, even though I started feeling pretty cold on my couch.
Yesterday after finishing the book my idea was to assign it 4 stars, because I really liked it, but it did not blow my mind. The reason I assumed was that in large parts it didn’t read like a novel, but like a non-fiction documentary. But today after sleeping over it, I realize that I have to amend my rating. The book is just as pleasantly written as the first two volumes, but Murakami opens up a number of new issues without ultimately providing any explanations.
I have to admit that I liked the first two volumes better because, in my opinion, Part 3 is even more bizzare in the events, but on the other hand the story progresses more slowly.
I think you have to look at the trilogy as a complete work and I want to try that now.
First of all, I wonder what kind of story I've read here: a love story, a sci-fi novel, a crime thriller? Murakami probably doesn't want to be categorized and put into drawers like this. But if you start from these three possible elements, then I liked the crime thriller parts best, although the author left a lot of threads hanging loose in the air in the end. The SciFi part is sometimes very over the top, often not really understandable, but always interesting. The love story, on the other hand, which forms the framework of the novel, is - how should I put it ..... silly. I wouldn't have needed it like that, nor did I appreciate the author's focus on sexual references.
But I was able to accept all of that for this very imaginative and very different work.
Therefore this book, like the whole trilogy, is very worth reading in my eyes and is strongly recommended by me. I rate it with 4 stars.

Das Buch ist zwar genauso angenehm geschrieben wie die ersten beiden Bände, aber Murakami macht hier eine Reihe weiterer Baustellen auf, ohne letztlich Erklärungen zu liefern.
Ich muss gestehen, dass mir die ersten beiden Bände besser gefallen haben, weil Teil 3 nach meinem Empfinden noch absurder in den Geschehnissen ist, aber andererseits die Geschichte langsamer voranschreitet.
Ich glaube man muss die Trilogie als Gesamtwerk betrachten und das will ich nun versuchen.
Zuallererst frage ich mich, was für eine Art Geschichte ich hier gelesen habe: eine Liebegeschichte, einen SciFi-Roman, einen Krimi? Wahrscheinlich will sich Murakami gar nicht so genau kategorisieren lassen. Wenn man aber nun von diesen drei möglichen Elementen ausgeht, dann haben mir die Krimi-Anteile am besten gefallen, obwohl der Autor am Ende viele Fäden lose in der Luft hängen lässt. Der SciFi-Anteil ist teilweise arg überdreht, oft nicht wirklich nachvollziehbar, aber immer interessant. Die Liebesgeschichte dahingegen, die das Gerüst des Romans bildet, ist - wie soll ich sagen.....albern. Das hätte ich so nicht gebraucht, genauso wenig wir die Fokussierung des Autors auf sexuelle Bezüge.
Aber ich konnte das alles in Kauf nehmen für dieses sehr phantasievolle und so ganz andere Werk.
Daher ist dieses Buch, wie die ganze Trilogie, in meinen Augen sehr lesenswert und wird von mir dringend empfohlen. Ich bewerte mit 4 Sternen. ...more

Die Geschichte, die Matt Haig hier erzählt, hat mir in großen Teilen wirklich gut gefallen.
Es geht um einen Mann, der sehr langsam altert (aktuell ist er über 400 Jahre alt, sieht aber höchstens wie 40 aus) und ausgehend von der Gegenwart im Rückblick von den wichtigsten Stationen seines Lebens erzählt. Daran hat mich zum einen die Erkenntnis fasziniert, dass die Menschen zu allen Zeiten schlecht und unerträglich waren, und zum anderen fand ich unwahrscheinlich interessant, welche Auswirkung eine so lange Lebenszeit auf die Psyche hat.
Ziemlich gestört hat mich jedoch das überdramatische Ende und vor allem, die völlig unnötige süssliche Liebesgeschichte. Dafür gab es Punktabzug und ich bewerte mit 3,5 Sternen.

I really liked most of the story that Matt Haig tells here.
It is about a man who is aging very slowly (he is currently over 400 years old, but looks no more than 40) and, starting from the present, he tells of the most important stages of his life in retrospect. What fascinated me about it was the realization that people were bad and unbearable at all times, and I was incredibly interested in the psychological impact of living so long.
What really bothered me, however, was the overly dramatic ending and, above all, the completely unnecessary, sweet love story. There were points deducted for this and I rate it with 3.5 stars. ...more

Dieser Sammelband enthält die ersten 4 Novellen der Murderbot-Reihe. Die Novellen berichten in zeitlich korrekter Abfolge vier Episoden einer übergeordneten Handlung.
Kurz zum Inhalt:
Es geht um einen Sicherheitsandroiden (SecUnit) mit organischer Außenhülle (also menschenähnliches Aussehen), der infolge eines traumatischen Erlebnisses sein Chefmodul gehackt hat und sich somit der menschlichen Befehlsgewalt entzogen hat. In den Geschichten geht es um die emotionale Entwicklung von Killerbot (wie er/sie sich selbst nennt) und das langsame Herantasten an zwischenmenschliche Beziehungen mit Menschen.
Die Geschichten sind spannend und sehr humorvoll aus der Sicht von Killerbot erzählt.
Mir hat dieses Buch sehr gut gefallen, aber nicht gut genug, um 5 Sterne zu vergeben, weil die Entwicklung des Protagonisten/der Protagonistin (mir ist nicht ganz klar ob Killerbot männlich oder weiblich oder non-binär oder vielleicht ganz was anderes ist) aus meiner Sicht zu oberflächlich blieb. Andererseits handelt es sich hier um Novellen, die aufgrund ihrer Kürze schwer eine große Komplexität aufbauen können. Ich habe mir den nächsten Band der Reihe schon bestellt, der dann normales Romanformat hat und hege die Hoffnung, dass damit dann die Grenze zu den 5 Sternen durchbrochen werden kann.

This anthology contains the first 4 novellas of the Murderbot series. The novellas report four episodes of a superordinate plot in the correct chronological order.
Briefly to the content:
It's about a security android (SecUnit) with an organic outer shell (i.e. human-like appearance) that hacked its chief module as a result of a traumatic experience and thus evaded human authority. The stories are about the emotional development of Murderbot (as he / she calls himself) and the slow approach to interpersonal relationships with humans.
The stories are exciting and very humorously told from the perspective of Murderbot.
I liked this book very much, but not good enough to rate it with 5 stars, because the development of the protagonist remained too superficial in my view. On the other hand, these are novellas which, due to their brevity, are difficult to build up with great complexity. I have already ordered the next volume in the series, which will then be in the normal novel format, and I am hoping that this will cross the border to the 5 stars.

Der vorliegende Band enthält 17 Kurzgeschichten von Tad Williams. Bemerkenswert ist wie weit gefächtert die Themen und der Stil dieser Geschichten ist. Um einen kurzen Eindruck zu vermitteln habe ich den Inhalt ein wenig aufgedröselt.
Diese Anthologie enthält 2 Drachentöter-Geschichten aus unterschiedlichen Perpektiven, 3 wahrlich furchterregende Horrorstories, eine davon im Format eines Drehbuchs, eine eher klassische Fantasy-Geschichte in einem mittelalterlichen Setting, 3 sehr unterschiedliche Märchen, eine Geschichte über Kinder/Jugendliche, die einen Comic entwickeln, im Format eines klassischen Memos, eine Detektivgeschichte im Zauberkünstlermilieu, eine kurze Fabel mit ungewöhnlichem Ende, eine äußerst witzige Variation der Schöpfungsgeschichte, sowie 4 Science Fiction-nahe Texte. Bei den 4 SciFi-Stories handelt es sich um eine Otherland-Geschichte mit Orlando als Hommage an den Zauberer von Oz, eine hat das Format eines Chat Protokolls und es geht um das Thema KI, eine ist einfach nur ziemlich lustig und eine dürfte als Religionskritik zu verstehen sein.
Wie immer bei Kurzgeschichtensammlungen war die Qualität der Geschichten nicht einheitlich bzw. mein Interesse an den Geschichten nicht gleichmäßig ausgeprägt. 4 der Geschichten fand ich eher so mittelmäßig, der Rest war jedoch überdurchschnittlich bis deutlich überdurchschnittlich.
Ich bin nur deswegen so detailliert auf den Inhalt eingegangen, um die große Vielfältigkeit der Texte zu verdeutlichen. Vor kurzem habe ich eine Videorezension über eine Kurzgeschichten-Anthologie eines Autors gesehen, bei der sich die Rezensentin ziemlich negativ darüber geäußert hat, dass der Autor sehr unterschiedliche Themen in seinen Geschichten behandelt hat.
Mir geht es da ganz anders. Gerade diese große Bandbreite der Themen und die unterschiedlichen Stile und Formate lassen mich dieser Anthologie noch mindestens einen zusätzlichen halben Bonus-Stern geben, so dass ich dieses Buch mit 5 Sternen bewerte.

This volume contains 17 short stories by Tad Williams. What is remarkable is how diverse the themes and style of these stories are. In order to give a brief impression I have unraveled the content a little.
This anthology contains 2 dragon slayer stories from different perspectives, 3 truly terrifying horror stories, one of them in screenplay format, a more classic fantasy story in a medieval setting, 3 very different fairy tales, a story about children/teens developing a comic , in the format of a classic memo, a detective story in the magician milieu, a short fable with an unusual ending, a very funny variation on the creation story, and 4 texts close to science fiction. The 4 SciFi stories are an Otherland story with Orlando as a homage to the Wizard of Oz, one is in the format of a chat log and is about AI, one is just pretty funny and one might be a criticism of religion.
As is always the case with collections of short stories, the quality of the stories was not uniform and my interest in the stories was not evenly developed. I found 4 of the stories to be mediocre, but the rest were above average to significantly above average.
The only reason I went into the content in such detail was to illustrate the great diversity of the texts. I recently saw a video review of an author's short story anthology where the reviewer was quite negative about the author's covering very different themes in his stories.
I'm completely different. It is precisely this wide range of topics and the different styles and formats that allow me to give this anthology at least an additional half a bonus star, so that I assign this book 5 stars.

This time everything is about Ivan Vorpatril. He manages to get married by accident and gets stuck with his wife’s unusual and very strenouos relatives (no wonder, they are from Jackson’s Whole).
In the beginning I missed Miles a bit, but we meet so many old acquaintances here that I soon didn’t mind any more. Besides we get to know Ivan a lot better and find out that he is much more resourceful than one would expect.
The biggest part of the story takes place in Vorbarr Sultana and involves people, events and buildings we know from previous novels. As in all books of the series there’s a lot of suspense and humor.
So I felt wonderfully entertained by this mood-improving story and rate it with 5 stars, what else. ...more
