Do I understand everything I read? Oh absolutely not. Actually, with most Blake books (read: ALL of them) I find myself pretty confused for a solid 75% of the journey, but honestly, I just have such a good time along the way (minus the scratching myself on the head being like what. is. happening??)
Masters of Death follows a whole cast of characters, from the godson of death, a vampire real estate agent, a very annoyed ghost, to a guardian angel who are all brought together through shared links to each other...and that's all I will say about that. The writing style, as mentioned, is beautiful and complex, the dialogue is hilarious (and EXTENSIVE) - my only main gripe is, honestly, the plot itself as it just kind of meanders along and I just wanted it go somewhere - anywhere? Just BE something more than it was.
All this considered, a solid 3.5 overall and one I would happily recommend to others!
Thanks so much to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC!
***also BONUS point for how well done the audiobook is, the narrator is superb***...more
"In case I hadn’t made this clear already, we’re not exactly the good guys.”
I went into this book not fully knowing what to expect, except that I was "In case I hadn’t made this clear already, we’re not exactly the good guys.”
I went into this book not fully knowing what to expect, except that I was 100% sold on the blurb and you know what?...it totally delivered!
In this story we follow our main protagonist, Cade Ombra, a mercenary wonderist (in this world, a specialist mage with an affinity for different magics) who finds himself in a spot of bother when a job he is working on goes TOTALLY tits up, so unable to deal with the fallout, he finds himself jumping into the next job...which he isn't entirely sold on.
As a condition of this job, he must acquire another six wonderists to make up to a band of seven...what follows is the collection of the strangest, most wonderful rag-tag band of characters ever.
I was totally hooked on the writing style of this book, short chapters that suck you into the world and the humour throughout was so well done and had me laughing out loud A LOT. I cannot wait to see where Sebastien de Castell takes us with these characters next, because I find I am really quite attached to them all now, despite how questionable some of them are - I NEED more!!
Thanks so much netgalley and publisher for the ARC! I had such high hopes for this one that I went and pre-ordered a nice signed edition even before I finished it - score!...more

We follow Kai, a powerful demon, who one day awakens in a prison, especially created for him, entombed against his will, for what to appears to have been months. What follows, is a back and forth to present day and a look into the past as Kai tries to find out what happened to him to end up in his prison.
Like I said, everything about this plot sounds like something I would absolutely love - however, It was honestly so very very boring. The start started off so strong and I was 100% vibing with it. But the writing was overly convoluted, I couldn't keep up with the characters and who was who (lots of similar names, are they bad? are they good?) I also had SO many questions about the magic systems but there was never much in the way of an actual explanation and you just kind of had to go with it instead.
I would normally have DNFd this quite early on, but as I was kindly given the ARC and had heard nothing but good things about Wells' writing I wanted to give it my best. Sadly, the payoff just wasn't worth it.
Thanks netgalley and the publisher for the copy! Sorry, it just wasn't for me....more
