I really enjoyed this slow burn story about Zoey and Sutton as they both worked on what they wanted to do with the rest of their lives and came from very different places. Zoey and her brother's backstory is tragic and heart wrenching, something no children should have to go through but Zoey's strength and determination was shown early on in how she stepped up even when she didn't know how.
It's understandable that later in life her one focus is getting her brothers to adulthood but she's let her dreams and wants go by the wayside in order to do it. When Sutton Reed moves back to town it's immediately evident that sparks fly between them, but this story is multifaceted and deals with a lot more than just their attraction. I really enjoyed the small town feel of this story where there are a lot of people connected and involved in each other's lives, it's great to see a community that lifts other people up.
The writing style and pacing made this an easy and enjoyable read and I just found myself smiling and laughing at a lot of points. I would definitely pick up more books by Rochelle Alers in the future.

I did not expect this book to fly by as fast as it did and was surprised by how fast it seemed to go. This is my first experience with Dodd's writing but I was pulled in by the writing and the way it flew by. I did feel like it could have been honed a bit as sometimes it did seem that some things weren't necessary, or were affecting the other aspects of the story in ways they didn't need to, but overall it was a really enjoyable read with vibrant characters. I look forward to picking up some of Dodd's other books in the future when looking for a good mystery....more

After reading a number of the short form comic books that have come out in the last year, I was really excited to pick this one up, especially after reading the synopsis and seeing the art style. This would be the perfect book to flip through if you're needing a quick laugh, smile or pick me up. I loved all the scenarios in this book and the little snippets of friendships and life between the different creatures features (one of my favorites involved penguins, but there were so many good ones!). I especially loved the continuing thread of the main shark and his fish friend as they interacted with other characters and lived their lives. All in all it was fun and heartwarming, sure to put a smile on anyone's face....more

After reading Hers to Tame I was excited to get the chance to read more from Rhenna Morgan and I have to say I wasn't disappointed. I really enjoyed this story as well as the relationship between Roman and Bonnie. Bonnie of course was hesitant to some things because of her history with her family and Roman was definitely an alpha personality, but the way things came together was wonderful.
Though this one is part of a series you can definitely read it without reading the previous books. Morgan's writing style is quick to read and has a ton of not only character development, but the plot is paced really well and constantly keeps you going forward. ...more

While I knew a little about Baba Yaga and some of her attributes, I have never really read a story involving her and I'm so glad this was my first. We follow a few different perspectives in this story with Baba Yaga being one of them, the others being Zima (a wolf) and Nadya (a young girl). At the surface this could certainly be framed as a fairy tale, but I felt it went much deeper than that. The three characters we follow as well as other characters go through transformations. There's a lot of narrative about not taking things at face value and forming their own opinions/decisions. There's also a lot about learning to face your fears or rise above fear when you feel it.
I absolutely flew through this story and was engrossed the entire time I was reading it. I did not want to put it down since I was so absorbed. The style of writing was easy to read and just kept me hooked the whole time....more

This is definitely for mature audiences only and honestly fell a bit flat for me. It's basically the same general situation told over and over again with the same results. The colors are super saturated and I felt like it was just too much of the same, while also being pretty intent on really pushing the narrative of the stereotypical characters. This one just wasn't for me, I'm sure that it has its own demographic and there were certainly some humorous moments, but just not my cup of tea....more

I always enjoy poems about animals and had previously enjoyed other collections I found, so I was excited to see this one pop up. I really enjoyed the biographical information about each author and the animals that they had in their lives, but I was somewhat disappointed when a good number of the poems weren't necessarily about dogs, and maybe had only a few lines or a mention of dogs. I was really hoping all of them would have dogs as the central subject, but I did enjoy the variance between styles and subjects overall....more

This is my first experience reading a book from Holly Bourne and overall I did find it to be an emotional and impactful read. The absolute win for this book was how April was written and the glimpses we got into her psyche and how she worked through things. Did she always take the right path or do the right thing? No, but who does. Since this is the first time I've read anything by Bourne I can't speak to how alike it is to her other books, but the writing style was easy to get into and flowed really well in my opinion.
Be aware that there are definite trigger warnings for sexual assault, rape and doubting self worth. It is an emotional story and while there is definitely a lot of humor thrown in, I wouldn't necessarily call it light hearted or a light read. It definitely is tackling a number of issues that can be triggering to people, or may be more on the emotional side for people, so know that going in.
Overall I did feel it was an important story to tell, if at times hard to confront, and did enjoy the reading experience. In the times we are in it is a good story for when you are wanting to examine things that are happening in current society, and how someone who is healing from assault (as well as other lifelong issues) can come back from that and continue to live their lives. ...more

I'm definitely in the mood for sweet Christmas stories, especially romances, right now and this one perfectly hit the spot. The pacing was good and the writing flowed really well so that this story just flew by. Since I had previously read one of Mike Dooley's works I was excited to get to pick up another of his titles. This one compiles all three books from the Notes from the Universe trilogy, which contained all of the "notes" that Dooley sent out starting in 2000. Most of the messages are humorous, poignant and positive. They can range from a few lines to a full page in some instances. This is a perfect book to use as something that you pick up each day and read a random passage from it. It also reads really well if you decide you want to read a chunk at the time....more

When this book first starts you are immediately sucked into the difficulties Bronte is experiencing, and man does she go through a lot in a short period of time. This definitely serves to establish her character and perseverance. The story is very fast paced and there are many things that happen very quickly.
The mystery and suspense element to the story was enjoyable and this is one of those stories that can easily be consumed in one sitting. I really enjoyed Chantal Fernando's writing style and will definitely be picking up more of her works in the future....more

After reading the synopsis of this one, I knew I wanted to pick it up. It looked like just the middle grade fantasy I was craving and promised to be a fun adventure. It was all that and more. I did not expect to fall in love with some of the characters as much as I did or sympathize with some of their plights as much as I did. Bo really has his own internal struggles that he battles with more of the book, which also tie into a lot of the core theme of the story.
The story flowed so well and turned this book into such a quick, enjoyable read. I was seriously bummed when I finished it because I wanted to read more about the characters and their lives - not because the story was lacking, but because the characters and world were woven so well. If you're looking for a fun fantasy adventure, I definitely recommend picking this one up....more

I didn't know this web comic existed, but now I'm glad I do. The adventures that Ozy and Millie have are adorable and the two of them seem to balance each other well. Plus other characters, such as their parents, were great voices in the comics as well. I loved the art style and how vibrant the colors were. This adventure was definitely a fun spin on the idea of people suddenly having superpowers and what they do with it but also unpacked some very relevant issues that are prevalent today. In it we follow Quin who can't be hurt, but doesn't really feel like it's of much value in the grand scheme of things. A lot of the internal dialogue Quin has it really good introspection about what constitutes the right thing and how perceptions of what that is can vary. Overall it was a fun take on the superhero trope and I really enjoyed the art style especially. All of the colors were dynamic and I really enjoyed the varying ways panels were put together. ...more

Just the premise of this one sounded fun to me, so I knew I wanted to pick it up. We follow Louie who is trying to save her town after the tourism market seems to dry up. Woven into the story is also her going through that period of late teens where she's trying to figure out what she wants to do and what comes after high school. It has a diverse and unique cast of characters and Louie is quite a character herself, but I was surprised when I discovered she was 17 as she does read a tad younger. There were times that her reactions were a little more adolescent than her age, but those were minor things. It's a fun adventure of one girl trying to save her town from being bought up and renovated and all the different things she tries on the way there....more

I had no idea that Catana Chetwynd was releasing another collection of her comics, but as soon as I saw it I had to give it a read. Her comics are so relatable and easy to identify with, especially when you're able to see your own relationship in her vignettes and snapshots of her relationship. If you've seen her comics on the internet, then you will recognize her style. She perfectly captures situations that can be both common and rare, but equally special, in a great relationship. This one definitely ends up being a great companion to her other collections. ...more

From page one you could tell that this was going to be hate to love, with very intense hate going on. I did enjoy the characters and their interactions, but there were definitely times when I felt there was just a little too much of the discourse. I also enjoyed the family interactions and side characters.
The writing was fast paced and easy to read, the book itself can easily be read in a single sitting as it does suck you right in with the way it starts. I do think that the extreme nature of the characters dislike for each other could be polarizing for some people, but if you like hate to love you'll probably really enjoy this one....more

I was initially sucked in just from the description because it mentioned lots of cats, but I loved this! The surface layer of the story is a superhero/supervillain story, but beyond that it is a story about things that happen when a friendship starts to become distant and fade away. All of us have gone through it at some point, but an often time it does happen is in those transition years between middle school and high school.
It isn't just a story about Katie catsitting and finding out things about the superheroes and villians in her city, it's also somewhat about her figuring out what trajectory her life is going to take and who she's going to spend time with.
I loved so many things about it and have to point out the details and personalities that went into all of the cats. I'm not going to say much more because spoilers, but I adored it! The art also was a shining part of this book, with a muted palette that perfectly suited the mood....more

I have read some of Svetlana's previous works and absolutely loved them, so I was excited to have the chance to read her newest one. This is set in the same supernatural world as her Nightschool series and features some young Weirn teens who are not only living in their night world, but also dealing with some of the insecurities and difficulties that young teens face. The adventure that the two cousins go one while trying to solve the mystery before them is fun and has the perfect amount of spooky elements.
Chmakova's art style is beautiful and the color palette perfectly suited the story and characters. I really enjoy how she depicts astrals especially and how each one of them had a different personality and look.

This manga was so adorable! This is definitely heartwarming and humorous as we follow Izumi and his girlfriend Shikimori. To the general populace Shikimori is seen as a very cute girl, but she has a side to her that is more 'cool' as the manga says. Her boyfriend often sees this side of her when she protect him from different things. This was a super fast read that left me both smiling and laughing at their antics. They both want to do things for each other and Izumi is always floored by how Shikimori acts. If you're looking for a cute pick me up that will make you laugh this is a great start....more
