I read The Fall of The House of Usher in school and vaguely remember the main point of the story so I was very excited to see that T. Kingfisher was releasing a retelling of sorts.
This story follows very similar beats to the original while remaining unique in its own way. In the original story, you have a brother and sister living in a decrepit house which the reader explores through the eyes of a visiting guest.
What Moves the Dead expands upon the original by adding more side characters and creating more reasons why the eerie house exists as it does. The author does a wonderful job of subverting the readers expectations in this novella.
If you enjoyed Mexican Gothic or any other gothic literature, you would enjoy this. I feel like this novella really encapsulates the same level of slightly grotesque imagery that gothic literature is known for invoking and I can see fans of the genre really enjoying this.

I loved following a demisexual main character and being in her head. I loved the love trapezoid and could easily how characters would feel certain ways. I love show this book really dove into what it’s like to have to work towards making your dreams come true.
My biggest issue with this is a lot of the story hinges on miscommunication and while I can see why it was happening, I think things were resolved a little too easily in most cases. ...more

Cerra is a southern gothic horror that takes place in Savannah, Georgia. We follow Holly in the wake of her brother’s suicide as she finds herself gravitating towards Maura, her brother’s mysterious girlfriend. Weird occurrences start to follow Holly as she investigates her brother’s death and everything seems to be linked back to Maura. Full of gothic imagery and carnivorous plants, this book will take you on a journey through one character’s psyche as her world is turned upside down.
I enjoyed this book for the most part. My biggest critique is that while it is fully an adult book, the characters feel very young and it reads as a young adult book through a lot of the story. I wanted more about the plants and the gothic atmosphere. The mystery felt very surface level and seemed to only creep into the narrative when the story needed to move forward.
But this was also a very easy book to get caught up in. The writing style is pretty plain for the most part which makes it a pretty quick read. I just wanted it to be a little more lush and atmospheric but it is still a solid 3.5 star book for me and I will continue to read books by this author!
