That's where I first heard of the book, and from what I heard of it after that, I wanted to read it. Friends is one of my favorite shows!

Earline, I think Friends gave the book a big boost. Every time I heard about the book, I'd identify w/ Joey putting The Shining to the freezer. But don't forget about the hedge animals. Every time I saw a bunch of animal hedges in other people's house, I'd just cringe!

That was the episode that made me buy both The Shining and Little Women! Love the show and the books :)

Wish I'd seen that episode. Actually, putting the book in the freezer doesn't strike me as odd at all. For some reason, that seems perfectly reasonable. Yes, its just that scary of a book.

You think I am being an elitist because I am shocked no one has heard of a book that has been around for 30 years? Since 1977 to be exact. That has been a best seller? A well known movie was also made of this book (just to let you know).
I wasn't being an elitist- it was pop culture shock. Get over it.

Well, I guess I can't speak for Erin, but I can for myself. It wasn't meant to be mean. It was honest shock. How (since there is the said movie that was out YEARS before Friends) it took a TV show to make people aware of a book that has been around for 30+ years. A popular book written by a well known author no less. It was honest surprise. Nothing more.

I love this episode of Friends... Both of the books mentioned are favorites of mine. :)

I don't put scary books in the freezer, they have a special place under my bed. I usually read before bed and if I hit a really scary part I toss the book as far under my bed as I can.

I managed to finish The Shining and it was an exceptional read but IT has been under my bed for 6mos and I have yet to make it passed page 5!

IT is the best book ever. It plays off every childhood fear you remember having. My favorite book too ;)

I wish I could read It! I can't get beyond page 5, my tummy hurts and I start to sweat every time I think about It! I have read every other SK book and there isn't another one that has such a profound affect on me!

I have seen that episode of Friends a million times and always loved it. I checked out the book from the library and was setting in my living room one afternoon with the tv muted reading. I got so into the book that I read for a couple of hours and when I stopped I didn't think to look at what was on TV before I picked up the remote and unmuted the tv. It was right at the part where they give away the whole ending. I had forgotten what happened, even though I had watched that episode so many times before. So they not only ruined the end for Rachel, the ruined it for me too! I was very angry, but it was also kind of funny.

Ummm well about hearing of the book on friends, I understand. I was a young teenager when I saw that episode. I had read and loved little women but I was still too young to handle Stephen King. My mum is a fan and I knew his name but only read Pre-teen romances and girly novels. I'm just assuming that there are many others like me?

I'm know where you're coming from, Little Women is one of my favourites as well and I do plan on giving The Shining a try myself, I think I'm old enough to handle it.

I love this review, that was a hilarious, true & super fun way to sum up what makes the book the classic it is. I read this in high school & would try to skip cross country practice to keep reading it. I couldn't put it down & was scared outta my mind. One of my favorite books, I'm glad to see other people love it, too! Also, 'Cujo' got me pretty good, too. In case anybody was wondering.

I just watched this episode last night and I came here. I think I'm going to read it. I love FRIENDS. And this is the first Stephen King I'm going to read.

Joey reads!? I had already read The Shining when this came out and saw Kubrick's movie (great!) ... But Joey's right! The freezer's a good place for a scary book! I better never read it on my Kindle...

One of my favorite episodes. However, the writers of said episode have obviously never read the book. No where in the book does it say, "All work and no play make Jack a dull boy." That was in the first movie only which was cinematic crap.

Old Review Still So True! I have read this book a few times! And, although the movie is great too, the book is just so much better!
And, the fact that when I read this again I will likely think of this review a few times, I will also likely not be as scared.

this has hit the list of one of the books i must have if I'm ever to be trapped on an island, but not if I'm ever to be trapped in a snow covered mountain resort.

never watched friends, but was lucky enough to have a mother that was a diehard s king fan, so this beast sat on our bookshelves ever since i was 6. it just took me 30 yrs or so to turn the 1st page.

How well do you suppose a Nook will stand up to a freezer?

I have never read The Shining, but read It in three days! I loved it, it's one of my all time favorites. I guess I should read The Shining now. Stephen King is my favorite author.

The book is always superior to the movie, and for me the movie The Shining was a particularly big letdown. Salem's Lot was the book that kept me up all night till I finished it (reading while holding tightly to the cross hanging around my neck).

Wow. Book-review-by-tv-sitcom. Surely, that's unique in literary criticism.

That's so funny, Lisa—that was the first thing I thought, too! Haha, and it would be just like Joey to have watched the movie as a legitimate alternative to reading the novel, wouldn't it?

That said, I do admire the film's additions and subtractions from the text. It's a very different experience, and works as an atmospheric, visual piece of work. I read the book years after seeing the movie and love it just as much. Lots of great motifs that the film omitted (like the bees and hedge animals). And how about the climax with the walking, talking clump of meat that Jack ultimately becomes? Terrifying!

Love Friends and love this review! That episode made me want to read both of these books.

I am such a massive friends fan and i have just started to read this book, my 1st king book and v.different to my normal reading- as i started to read..i quoted this quote you wrote to my fiance hahah long live friends!

Every time I think of The Shining this very episode comes to mind. When I start reading this and if I get a little bit scared I can get my entire box set of Friends and find that exact episode. I know for sure it will help me carry on reading.

friends was the best show ever :) it was that same episode that made me bought the book. as a book i just had to know what it was about, and i was not disappointed. it was scary but at the same time it was impossible to put down
