Don't. Bother.
It begins so seductively lyrically descriptive. But it's too far-fetched when it comes to ghosts and demon possession and what seems to be the depravity and ugliness of humanity - for stretching to see just how ugly it can be.
I think there is are good characters, good descriptions and a good message as the backbone of this novel. However, for me, it just went a bit too far into the do-do-do-do land of nastiness to keep that backbone in sight.
Although I enjoy challenging, dark fiction with something to be gleaned from any writer - the best of it got buried in the not-quite-so-much.
I picked it up, because I'd seen that it was the latest "Oprah" book. Must admit that during the prime Oprah years, I wasn't reading much fiction (other than some mystery/thriller authors), thus, have yet to read many of her "selections". Hmmmmm.....if, as someone suggested, she chooses a certain "style", I may choose other lists first!
