really liked it
bookshelves: fiction

I read this book like eleven years ago, or maybe it was twelve, or inevitably even longer in the future. I don't remember much about it. I remember taking it out of the library, it was in the new release section, so I only had ten days to read the book. I then remember reading part of it sitting at the counter of a coffee shop that would be soon banning me from being their customer, but that has nothing to do with the book. I do remember that the part of the book which I remember reading at the above mentioned counter took place in a boat.

I liked this book. I remember that. I remember thinking that it was a let-down after the amazing American Psycho (which I do not care if you agree or disagree with my opinion about AP, even mentioning this book causes extreme reactions from people. I liked it, if you didn't that's ok. If you feel the need to froth at the mouth about liking or disliking the book take it too another review, I don't feel like being a part of a discussion about the book), and that the book was disjointed, with the first half and the second half being night and day, and that the links between high fashion / celebrity culture and international terrorism were a little, eh.

But I also remember that silly Bret Easton Ellis was still an enjoyable read. And that I feel like I've been a major douche bag by being a Bret Easton Ellis hater of sorts; just because every hipster that can read, or at least wants to make it look like he or she can read, has asked for his books, doesn't mean that I can't still like him becasue he was good, and maybe the books that came after this one are still good (or book, does he have anything more than Lunar Park? as of this writing? I know he has one this summer, and once again he will be reading at our store, and I will try not to think bad thoughts of him this time, even if the store fills to capacity with the turdiest of the turds from Williamsburg).

I kind of miss reading him, now that I think of it. I think I'm going to go find a copy of Less than Zero read the fuck out of it in preparation for the sequel coming out this summer to his debut novel. And maybe I'll enjoy it, that's right hipsters I'll enjoy it in spite of you!!

David Really? You liked this book? I couldn't get through it...

BUT it has one of my favorite book covers of all time. (The cover is really the only reason why I ever tried to read it, so let that be a lesson to graphic designers/marketers of books.)

^ ^ ^ That cover up there sucks.

Greg I did, but I may have had lower standards back then. That is the copy I actually own, it's british and was in the bargain section. The copy I read had all of the holes on the cover with celebrities faces under them.

karen i hated the first half of it and then it got good, much to my chagrin, as i had pretty much talked, well, implied, shit about it to mr ellis at his book reading. oops.

be less hasty!

karen you will never learn how to spell/pronounce this motherfucker's name.

and it always bothers me.

Greg I can never remember which way it is, and then i pick wrong. i'm stupid.

karen i'm just being a pill...
but i have your butter!

Greg Thank you, thank you.

David A float has happened here.

Whatsamattah, Greggly? Didn't feel enough love on this one?

Where's Stephen's voting power when you need it?

karen look i am commenting from my recent update page!! yeah, i don't like this. it is taking up too much space.

message 10: by Greg (new) - rated it 4 stars

Greg I don't know what happened Daveey, Daveey Crockett. Or maybe I thought this review got lost by writing two last night.

karen floating is a god given right, especially now, in the time of new, compressed goodreads.com

message 12: by Greg (new) - rated it 4 stars

Greg Yeah, Davey Daaaveeey Crockett, or should I say Daaaavvvvveeeeyyy Cockett! Float this!

message 13: by David (new)

David Ffffffffffffflyspeck.

Feces.

message 14: by David (new)

David And goodreads.com is not compressed. It's more bloated and distended than ever now, what with those little comment boxes all over the feed.

Floating is immoral.

karen but the part that says "jim and bill and emily and gloria liked this review*" is all compressed and i hate it.

*well, not this review, cuz no one seems to like this review, but you take my point.

message 16: by David (new)

David Yeah. Just because you want to jam up the feed with individual 'like' citations for your reviews.

Glorywhore.

karen i like to see my smiling face, don't you?

The Crimson Fucker why did you got ban from a coffee shop?

I agree, how did this happen?

James Thomas So, I'm like a HUGE Ellis fan. I've read AP, LTZ, LP and IB and I've loved them all less than zero is my favourite book of all time, the only book I didn't enjoy is The rules of attraction, it sucked. I'm wondering wether I should spend some time on Glamorama? I've heard mixed reviews but I don't how Ellis' writing would lead to this eg how much sex, murder, rape, horror or killer Ferbies are there?

message 21: by Greg (new) - rated it 4 stars

Greg It's been so long since I read this, about 15 or 16 years. I remember liking this and after American Psycho this was fairly restrained, although it's just as culturally immersed. I'd say read it if you liked everything else but Rules of Attraction, which I liked but if I hadn't read it in college I probably wouldn't have liked it as much.

message 22: by James (new)

James Thomas I'm in college right now studying to become a writer (Ellis imposter) and I still really didn't find it interesting, yes some parts of TROA were okay but sean is really nothing compared to Clay and don't they like bump into each other or know eachother or some shit and it just seems like all if Clay's so called friends all essentially blank, socially impossible zombies so I expected him to have some shitty past too

message 23: by Greg (new) - rated it 4 stars

Greg I can see that. I think the only thing I liked about the book was that everyone likes someone who doesn't like them back but likes someone else who doesn't like them. I was just relating and at the time I hadn't read all that many 'good' books yet.

message 24: by James (new)

James Thomas Ah right I got you

message 25: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Obrigewitsch What's so bad with hipsters, better than Gangsters. Which was the trend through much of the 90s and early 2000s, now that was a bad trend, women in baggy pants and overalls will never be attractive.

message 26: by Greg (new) - rated it 4 stars

Greg Overalls were unfortunate in the 90's.

karen you own overalls.

message 28: by Greg (new) - rated it 4 stars

Greg There is a lot about me that is unfortunate from the 90's.

karen heh.

blonde.

message 30: by Greg (new) - rated it 4 stars

Greg That picture isn't unfortunate at all!

karen don't be kind - i made a shitty blonde. i'm too damn pale for it

message 32: by Mir (new)

Mir Aren't blondes supposed to be pale? You are like a German blonde rather than a SoCal blonde. But there's always mystic tan...
