Raising my rating to five stars after this second read because of my enjoyment and the fact that I have I thought of this book quite frequently in the years since I first read it. Rob Lowe is a wonderful storyteller and his life makes for interesting reading!

He has obviously lived a very interesting life, but he is also very good at telling the stories. He manages to share a lot without being gossipy or undermining those around him, which I appreciate. His encounter with Liza Minnelli was particularly heartwarming.

The descriptions of the darker side of growing up in Malibu have stayed with me since the first reading, and felt even more troubling to read. He recounts many tragic deaths, and his insight into this led to one of my favourite paragraphs from the book:
"Why was hideous and untimely death so commingled with the experience that was Malibu in the mid-'70s? There were drugs, which weren't as understood as they are today, there was also the wild and rough nature of the personalities Malibu attracted. But more important, there was a price to be paid for a culture that idealizes the relentless pursuit of "self". Malibu was a wellspring of counterculture group think. To be counter to the culture, you are by definition willfully and actively ignoring the culture, i.e., reality. And when you ignore reality for too long, you begin to feel immune to, or above, the gravitational pull that binds everyone else. You are courting disaster."

His struggle with the newfound heart-throb status is interesting too. He was mobbed by crowds of girls, in scenes that feel more frightening than flattering. He observes that, "The girls' reactions seemed almost programmed, like they were both the performers and the audience in a teen-angst drama that had nothing to do with me."

A large section of the book is focused on The Outsiders -- the process of auditioning and then the actual production. It's fascinating to read about the various cast members, most early in their careers but who went on to make many more excellent films. Most of Rob Lowe's scenes were cut from the film, and having read the book and loved the way it focuses more on the family dynamic between the three brothers, I would love to see the The Outsiders: The Complete Novel which adds all of this back to the film.

It's interesting to me how a similarly significant role later in his career, as Sam Seaborn in The West Wing ended up echoing this experience in some ways, as he won a coveted part in a show that became groundbreaking, but was never really given any significant storylines. Having watched the first five seasons of the show, I feel he was well cast and well suited to the show, so I am unsure why his character wasn't used more. It felt like a wasted opportunity to me, and I can understand why he left.

His journey to sobriety and marrying his wife, Sheryl, was inspiring reading, as was the way his career progressed once he was in a better place mentally and emotionally.

Something I was frequently impressed with as I read was just how many good, truly good, projects he has been a part of, often playing quite varied roles. He managed to defy the odds against his early "pretty boy" images and carve out a brilliant career for himself, particularly in comedy. That he has lasted decades in an industry that often prefers the next big thing to someone established with a proven track record is wonderful to observe. He does note somewhere in the book that magazine covers used to be reserved for established stars, people who had earned their place, but over time focus shifted to the young actors just starting out. I think in recent years we are starting to see a bit more of a balance between the two, which I personally hope continues.

This was a buddy read with my friend Carolyn, and it allowed for lots of interesting conversations!

C. (Comment, never msg). I don't think you said you already read this. I am starting it.

Kerri I have seen many more Rob Lowe movies now than I had when I first read it, which is why I'm interested in revisiting it - I will start it tonight! 😀

C. (Comment, never msg). Your write-up is fantastic, Kerri! You give a nice sampling of what Rob covers and how much he impresses you. I saw him in a live interview after I finished this and cheered: it was nice to see him after acquainting him this well!

"The Outsiders" story itself didn't take up space, a subject not to me taste. It was our look at how he got his break and what the auditioning and filming process were. Michael J. Fox described what a few movie, TV, and Hollywood experiences were like for him; Rob taught us how the industry works!

I was riveted to the whole book; in turns excited to recognize groundbreaking films and actors he craftily built-up to naming and being pleased to acquaint great ones, like Cary Grant, whom I do not know. The paragraph you quoted is creepy but is a fine example of Rob's talent of expression and philosophical observation, yielding an important warning about a dangerous way to approach life. Each of our reviews will be different and it is fun to see which parts we pick out and savour highly: the gift of a buddy read.

Kerri I'm never sure if I should mention a book being a buddy-read or not in a review!

I do love that he really gets into the specifics of everything here, especially "The Outsiders" process since that was such a unique experience.

I look forward to reading your review! :)

C. (Comment, never msg). I squeezed in what I wanted to say for "The Joy Luck Club" today but I think every other review will mention you and Leeanne where she is applicable. I like the memories of sharing these books.

If you would do one thing: would you please update the dates to when you read these? Many of your books say 2016 and I see that is probably because it is when you joined the website and added your books. If you forget when the dates are and you didn't do update notes along the way, you could refer to my starting and closing dates. :)

Kerri I have updated that now! I just read your review for "The Joy Luck Club" and enjoyed it a lot. 😀

C. (Comment, never msg). I appreciate everything you say here and at my review of "The Joy Luck Club" too; which is the first comment since I wrote it! I get too many empty "like buttons" and I look forward to seeing what people say about my Rob Lowe feedback especially. It is much more personal, because it is the autobiography of someone we know and our feedback is about how we relate to this wonderful human being in our culture.

I love all your observations about it, as you know from our private e-mail discussion. What a picky contradiction of viewpoints for actors to fight through, which you remind me of succinctly. Some producers want the next big thing, some want established actors. I would despair of it and anyone who succeeds in that picky industry can have the salaries they earn with my compliments

Luvtoread Excellent review, Kerri! I appreciated how you have such a detailed insight to how Rob struggled with his game and the industry!!😀

Kerri Some producers want the next big thing, some want established actors. I would despair of it -- This does seem like it would be exhausting --- I would definitely find it challenging!

C. (Comment, never msg). I think you know, Shirin & Kerri, I seldom reread because Ron & I have such a wonderful, large book collection. I have usually only reread books I was too young to remember now. However, like I replied at my review, this is one of those magical books for me that I want to experience again, at least by audio book! It is my goal to obtain it! I feel the same personal connection to Patrick Swayze's and Michael J. Fox's and would treasure their audio books too. The prices of their CDs need to come down.

Kerri Shirin wrote: "Great review, Kerri! Reread books are so special to me. This means they are wonderful."Thank you, Shirin! I feel the same way! :)

And Patrick Swayze and Michael J. Fox as well -- especially since they are such meaningful books and the opportunity to listen the stories in their own voices becomes particularly poignant. :)

C. (Comment, never msg). Spotting them in a second hand store is the likeliest means. When we finally have fast internet, I will seek a way to download them as a torrent or something. Naturally, having the actual CDs is my preference as a fan but hearing them will be appreciated, however the opportunity affords itself.

Amzette Kerri, you have a great talent for writing reviews. I just started listening to this book about 20 min. ago! I was really drawn in by your review of this beloved man. I’ve loved him since I was young and I really look forward to learning more about him! I enjoyed your review so much that I went and read several of your other reviews of books that you’ve read or listened to. I have to admit that I’ve added about 8 or more books to my TBR list, either because I’ve never heard of them or simply because you’ve sold me on them! I’ve written quite a bit of reviews but I’m definitely not great at writing them! I have a deep passion for books/audiobooks and I love reading other people’s opinions. I’ve had to start listening to more books than actually reading them, due to chronic illnesses. I still read books (which I would prefer) but I’m just not nearly as fast as I used to be. I just wanted to thank you for taking so much time out, in order to put such great effort into the work that you do for these reviews! I also requested your friendship. Happy Reading/Listening! 💜📚🎧
