it was amazing
Read 2 times. Last read May 8, 2024 to May 13, 2024.

2024 - Make Japan and Mirrorshades Great Again

A 3rd re-read, but the last time I read Neuromancer the internet didn't exist. Well, technically it did, but only in the embryonic form used by wizards in the laboratories of research centers and universities. The first two times I read it in my youth, I remember it being somewhat confusing, but still super atmospheric and cool. Today I found it much easier and pleasurable to read. Probably because Neuromancer influenced culture and technology over the past 40 years. Neuromancer has grown into the context it created.

Charles ...Neuromancer has grown into the context it created.

At this point, I think its more interesting to contrast how things didn't develop?

For example: Fukumoto-Arborén is not E-Corp, Consoles and Smart TV's are the closest thing to Decks, Black Ice is a crude patchwork of apps and hardware that doesn't prevent corporations from having to pay ransomware, and AirPod-like devices are as close to bio-mods as folks get, etc..

Adina (way behind) There will be an Apple TV series soon.

Neuromancer hype! I'm wondering if the writers for the series will recontextualize Gibson's world

Writing near-future science fiction is such a challenge. Gibson even remarked he thought it was funny Neuromancer makes use of pay-phones.

Google The Payphone Directory. New York City (Manhattan) still has about 30 payphones.

The Street still has a use for them. 😉
