A buddy read with Evgeny and Maria, because we cannot stop the Forward Momentum!!!

"...“All the geniuses I ever met were so just part of the time. To qualify, you only have to be great once, you know. Once when it matters.” ..."

Once again I am going to sound like a fan-girl, but I can't help it! This series has stolen my heart. I know I have several series of books which I love and are a must read for me, but most of them are more because the story lines are not finished, and the worlds are marvelous, and the writing is great, and I really enjoy the characters... and so on. However, of all of those, The Vorkosigan Saga is the one that I have the most tenderness for. It makes me think, it makes me feel, and it makes me appreciate the more imperfect of the human emotions, the issues we are dealing with in one way or another on daily basis but disguised in a Sci-Fi form. On top of that, as the main protagonist we have Miles, a young man whom we have followed for several years and his evolution form a kid to an adult has been spellbinding... I fill like he is my kid, or more correctly, as if he is my sister's kid and I get to claim and be proud of him and his achievements even though I have been just an observer in his life... He is bigger than life, but packed in a small frame and vulnerable psyche. I love this character so much, he is quickly becoming one of my favorite of all time!

"...“Some people grow into their dreams, instead of out of them.” ..."

This is the first book since he had to part with his second personality, Admiral Naismith, and is now just Lord Vorkosigan, the Imperial auditor. A position which would be the professional peak of any other person on Barrayar, is just "settling" for our Miles... It has been 3 months since he took this post and he is learning on the job by assisting a senior member of the Imperial Auditors. They have to investigate what happened on Komarr, a planet which Miles's father was instrumental in conquering and at the time acquiring the nickname "The Butcher of Komarr"... Having his son on the planet is a bit challenging for the locals, to put it mildly... On top of that, they are staying with the niece of the older partner and her family, which are having some domestic problems and there are multiple tensions in the air. Incidentally, the niece, Ekaterin, happens to be just Miles's type and very unhappy in her marriage... Tum-tum-tuuuummmm.... (there was no cheating, for which I was very grateful!!!)

"...“So the difference between a criminal and a hero is the order in which their vile crimes are committed. And justice comes with a sell-by date. In that case, you’d better hurry. You wouldn't want your heroism to spoil.” ..."

As always, we get the usual action, political machinations, and the mandatory ethical conundrum, mostly based on genetic mutations and conditions. The good thing is, this world is fictional and things can get fixed, while we don't have those luxuries in RL:(((... I love how the author handles all of those situations without making them preachy or intrusive. They are looked upon as just a part of human everyday life and we can imagine parents, kids and spouses dealing with them in just this manner...

"...““He’s not so short,” said Ekaterin defensively. “He’s just . . . concentrated.” ..."

As always I would like to encourage all readers to try this series and see if it is something they might like - it is a great series for young and old alike, because there are situations and issues which are thought provoking for those who have no real life experience as well as those who have had more than they would have liked to have had:):):):)

I wish you all Happy Reading and many more wonderful books to come!!!!

Maria Dimitrova This reread proved a bit different than the previous ones. I usually focus on Miles' part of it but this time Ekaterin's POV had more impact.

Choko Ha! I wonder why? Miles is such a scene hoarder:-)

It helped that he was the familiar face back then and the fact that I didn't have friends in similar situations as Ekaterin. Now I have the experience to appreciate what she's going through.

I wonder what would happen to my read. I have a very minor tragedy today: I left my ereader at home; this mean almost 2 hours wasted on transit. I will only be starting tonight.

This really is a tragedy. I double check if my wallet is in my purse and triple check for the Kindle. I don't know what people who don't read do while commuting.

Ask me; I know now. I slept :(

Maria Dimitrova At least you got some Zs.

Choko Ecatherine is not happy... I wouldn't be with this husband either. I love her uncle the professor, don't really have opinion on the kid yet, but I know she is Miles' type of woman and I hope he doesn't make her cheat on her husband... I am only on Ch 5 thought...

Choko Ch. 10... I know he is an asshole, but that is still a horrible way to die...

Miles has enough scruples not to get involved in adultery. At least I was never given indication of it. Maybe it's wishful thinking on my part. He does disregard rules all the time. Ekaterin is like any other emotionally abused woman in a long-term relationship. It takes a lot of courage to leave, especially when you believe that you're worthless. And emotional abusers usually manage to make their victims believe that first thing.

I would have prefered for him to face charges. And yet it would have made Ekaterin and Nikki's lives a living hell.

Montzalee Wittmann I read this series and stopped right before reading this. I miss these fun reads.

Maria Dimitrova I can believe you started after me and not only finished so quickly but managed to write a review before me! I'll read it later about the time I write my own.

Vesna You perfectly described Miles 💖

Miles tends to draw one deep into his world. I can never get enough of him. Great review, btw, I just love seeing the series through your eyes :)

Thank you, love! I wouldn't have read it if it was not for you to lead me to it:) I am forever grateful!

✘✘ Sarah ✘✘ (former Nefarious Breeder of Murderous Crustaceans) How do you guys manage to BR so many books? Care to share your secret with me, dear wives?

Choko is the wonder buddy reader here. I'm just doing two books per week both BRs.

Choko I fell in love with this series, so until I finish it, we are reading one book every Monday. They are very fast reads, because they just can't be put down, at least I can't. SO, I just read:) Plus, I only work with one client, while you have hundreds of either students or customers, so I have much more time than you guys... Sorry!!!

Two BRs a week is a pretty good pace, as far as I'm concerned. The mere idea of having just one book to BR every week freaks me out these days, haha.

Oh please don't be sorry! I'd definitely switch places with you if I could, then you'd REALLY be sorry, hahaha. I'm just jealous because I wasn't able to join you for this BR. The series sounds great, and I can't wait to read it. It's definitely on my summer reading list. I'd love to read it sooner, but I don't think I'll be able to.

Maria Dimitrova Sarah, dear, I volunteer to be you buddy reader guide/companion on that journey. I can never get enough of Miles and company.

I used to be able to juggle 4-5 books at a time. I'm getting old.

Choko I will re-read it with you. Brent wants to read it too:-)

Maria Dimitrova Choko wrote: "I will re-read it with you. Brent wants to read it too:-)"

Miles corrupted you completely.

✘✘ Sarah ✘✘ (former Nefarious Breeder of Murderous Crustaceans) Not sure I'll have the time to BR if I read the series during the summer, but I'll let you know whenever I'm ready to start:) You guys love it so much that you wouldn't mind rereading it so soon?!

@Maria: if it makes you feel any better, I was NEVER able to juggle juggle 4-5 books at a time, haha.
@Choko: is Brent a friendly barnacle?

Choko He is. He loves Fantasy and Sci-fi:-)

✘✘ Sarah ✘✘ (former Nefarious Breeder of Murderous Crustaceans) That's what I thought you'd say. Friendly *shivers* Is he a little nefarious, too? Just a teensy little bit? That would make things much easier for me, you know.

And here I thought it was the norm :D And that everyone who couldn't was just lazy ;)

Oh I'm not lazy, I just don't have the mental ability to read more than one book at a time, haha.

Maria Dimitrova It took me awhile to grasp the fact that just because I can do something it doesn't mean everyone can. My classmates thought I was one of those people that just study all the time because of my straight As when in fact I could reproduce most of my lessons simply by being present in class. Now when my students ask me how I studied for exams (since I'm closer to them age wise) and I say well i read it once they look at me as if I'm either lying or some sort of genius.

Choko I am exactly the same! My co-students hated me for it:-)

✘✘ Sarah ✘✘ (former Nefarious Breeder of Murderous Crustaceans) Oh dear. I married two female Einsteins. I am so doomed.

Maria Dimitrova You have a talent, dear, you found us both!

✘✘ Sarah ✘✘ (former Nefarious Breeder of Murderous Crustaceans) Right ♫ Always look on the bright side of life ♫ Haha.
