did not like it

literally what the fuck was this book.

the main character was in love with her own uncle. like i just could not get past how weird and uncomfortable that was, and i will never understand why the author decided to do that. and don't think i didn't fucking notice how she made toby say that he understood june's "wrong love" for her uncle, implying that because he's gay he could understand her gross feelings. here's a free tip for straight writers everywhere: don't compare gay love to incest! just don't fucking do it!

i'll be honest, for about a third of the book i sort of enjoyed it - the writing was sometimes really nice, i was very interested in learning more about toby and finn and their relationship, and i guess i was sort of hoping june would realize she didn't actually have a crush on her uncle but she was just lonely and he gave her attention or something. but it got to the point where i couldn't ignore the weird shit anymore, and the author really doubled down on june's feelings as the book went on. i thought this was going to be a moving and emotional story about two people helping each other grieve, but it sucked. i should've put it down the first time i felt uncomfortable.

MeiChi THANK YOU for mentioning the “wrong love” comparison. I read this book a while ago and I wasn’t sure why there weren’t more reviewers talking about this

theStorykeeper Just finished chapter one and had to come to reviews to check if this book is incestuous. Ick. Why is nobody talking about this?

Andrea Gasser Completely agree!! I have a really hard time not finishing books, but this one was too much for me and I just had to stop reading. So weird!!

Amyeoff Ugh. These comments. She wasn’t really “in love” with her uncle. She loved him and maybe conflated it with romantic love because of her inherent disposition. There was nothing creepy or weird about it. It’s not like they made out, or even wanted to. It was a lovely, honest book. Sometimes people have feelings they don’t entirely understand, and that is fine and acceptable.
