Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body

Listening to Roxanne Gay read her memoir, Hunger, was like listening to a close friend divulging some of her most painful and intimate memories, thoughts and feelings -- if that friend also happened to be a wickedly good writer. It was uncomfortable, heartbreaking and awe inspiring. I've read other excellent books by women who talk about their own and society's reactions to their large bodies, but Hunger is in its own class -- so smart and real and infinitely nuanced.
I can't think of anything more to say about Hunger other than: read it, listen to it, think about how you feel about your own body, think about how you see and think of others.
Well, one more thing... Earlier this year, I read Gay's short story collection, Difficult Women. I appreciated the writing, but struggled with the relentless darkness of the stories. I suspect that if I read it now, I would see the stories in a completely different light, understanding that the violence, fear of violence and self-loathing are extremely personal to Gay -- not just there to shock her readers but born out of her own experiences and emotions. I also now want to read everything else she has written
Again: read it, listen to it!

Fantastic review, Esil. I love Untamed State - didn't add her short story one as I really didn't read and sparkling reviews in it, however this one does sound appealing- thanks to your review. I think I'll chance it! Thanks!

Thanks Jen. I can't recommend it highly enough. The subject matter is important and heartbreaking, and her writing I'd phenomenal. I need to get my hands on Untamed State.

Loved your review but hesitant to read it because I have tried to read two of her previous books and couldn't finish either.

Thanks Diane. I hadn't loved Difficult Women, but this is memoir. It's quite short if you decide you might want to give it a try.

Thanks Bianca. Audio is definitely the way to go.

I read her novel set in Haiti and it was G_d awful. A feminist friend told me Gay is uneven so I am going to hold out for the library book.
Great review Esil. My copy just arrived.
For this one I'm glad to be reading in print. I often favor the audiobook, and if I had gone that way with Hunger I might have said I was glad I did. But understanding from various sources that it is a somewhat raw and uncomfortable read, I may be better able to face it in print....sometimes audio is so unflinching when I I want to flinch, to put a little bit of distance between page and self. I'm sure Gay is not nearly so cowardly as I am.

Fantastic review, Esil. I'll be getting a copy soon. I've been waiting for it for about a year! I'm predicting you'll LOVE Untamed State, though it's rough going. I liked Difficult Women, but it can't in any way compete with Untamed State.

As I mention in my review, Barbara, I didn't love Difficult Women. This is very different. It's a very honest memoir about her personal struggles. It's hard to imagine taking issue with anything she has to say.

Thanks Deanna. I hear what you're saying about wanting the distance of the page. I must say however that hearing her read added so much to this one.

Thanks Debbie. I can't wait to hear what you have to say about this one. Untamed State seems to gave generated dramatically different reactions but I will definitely give it a try.

Great review Esil! I've avoided this book because I didn't care for her previous book, Untamed States. After reading your review maybe I should keep an open mind!

Thanks JanB. I can't compare it to Untamed States, but I certainly highly recommend this one to everyone. It's hard not to be taken with her raw honesty.

I have this on my TBR. I'm so happy to see you gave this 5 Stars, Esil! Now I feel I must get to this one soon. :). Wonderful review!

Fantastic review, Esil! I loved "Difficult Women" but I'm not sure if this one if for me, but I'm glad you felt so strongly about it!

Esil , I have not read anything by Gay yet but your review is fantastic and I think I should definitely try something by her.

I would try this memoir. My guess is that you might not like difficult women and Untamed State seems to get really mixed reactions.

Esil, perfect. I'm just starting the audio. I'm on vacation with family, so I get more reading (and listening) done at home! ; )

Thanks Toni. I hope you get as much out of this one than I did. A few days later, I am certainly still thinking a lot about it.

I can really feel your admiration here and I am glad. You are right, our responses to this work are very different. Thanks for being my GR friend Esil :)

Great review and endorsement for the author's story. I have An Untamed State to read. I'll look for this audio.

A lot of people reading this, Esil.
Intriguingly, the reviews are mixed.
Great to see a different perspective.

Thanks Kevin. I've definitely seen reviews less enthusiastic than mine. I can see how this one might generate mixed reactions. Gay doesn't mince her words.

Brilliant review, Esil! I couldn't put this down, haven't stopped talking about it months later, and still feel the force of Gay's honesty crawling in my skin. Transformative and powerful, I wholeheartedly agree it's a must-read (or must-listen)!

Fabulous review, Esil, I've hesitated on a few of her books, but I've watched some of her videos... but I think you've won me over on this one! Adding!

Thanks Cheri. I liked this far more than her short stories. I hope you get as much out of it as I did.
