(leaning forward so my lips touch the microphone) it's a YIKES from me!
I, a keen admirer of Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman since 2017 when I read The Illuminae Files, felt fairly positive about this book. I tried to hold on to that wide-eyed optimism while reading this book, but it was like trying to hold on to smoke or shadow. Boredom had its hooks in me before I was even halfway through the novel, and I was ju glad when this one was over, not gonna lie.
That said, Aurora Rising does kick off with a high-concept punch.
When Legionnaire Tyler Jones investigates a distress call mere hours before the squad Draft and discovers a 220-year-old cryogenically frozen girl, what he should do and what he would do had no bearing upon each other. Jones misses the Draft but rescues the girl—an endeavor which, heroic though it was, is bound to catch up with him sooner or later. He is assigned Squad Leader to a crew of leftover misfits, and their first mission ends with cataclysm and apocalypse: Aurora Jie-Lin O’Malley is explicably no longer encased in frozen cryogel, but is more inexplicably on their ship.
Mistrust immediately spools out between them and Aurora, but a cryptic message from two of their superiors in which they implicitly—but fervently—insist that they protect her, and in light of their acceleration toward doom, the squad decides to mine for answers that will hopefully cast a decent enough light into the depths into which they had all unwisely ventured. However, they quickly find out that they’re facing inexorable forces and they had at best a coin flip of coming out of it alive.
**
There are a few things Aurora Rising does relatively well—from its sturdy premise to its attempts at subverting well-worn tropes (though some elements wind up being huge red herrings) to even some finer points of morality and responsibility pulsing beneath the surface (the novel, however, allows them very little space to grow a thematic argument of any complexity)—but being a gripping read isn't one of them.
As bursting with enthusiasm as Aurora Rising is, not all of the authors' choices pan out. The novel is overstuffed with sci-fi spectacle, little of it being particularly fresh. The story sprints past most of its poignant moments to unrelentingly pursue the next plot objective instead, which comes at the cost of a winning story. The plot feels rushed, and the many point-of-view characters are flattened by so little page-time, and regularly cutting to some of them didn’t feel organic either. I soon found myself becoming indifferent to them (except maybe Finian whose shoulders must be strained from hefting the weight of this entire book). I simply didn’t care. I didn’t care so profoundly that a well of cynicism rose in me, and the boredom of it all almost bled my brain front to back. It doesn’t do the story any favors that the book's entire narrative bends towards an ending that's frustratingly glib, and it was all I could not to fling my kindle against the wall.
Here is the thing: I signed up for a swashbuckling romp packed full with camaraderie, charisma and quick wit, featuring a crew of diverse misfits wrestling with rejection and the choices that got them into this mess in the first place. But Aurora Rising carries itself with nothing of the funny dialogue, and the yanked heartstring that made The Illuminae Files so winning. With an unexciting plot, characters that are as compelling as a wet ball of yarn, relationships that have zero chemistry (you have SEVEN characters and you decide to pair them all into heterosexual ships? Please. I am bored. I feel like yawning. I am already yawning), and girl-on-girl hate that outstayed the acceptable page limit by a factor of at least three, this novel was a huge let down.
You’d think some cosmic authority would put a limit on how many disappointments one gets in a lifetime, but oh well.

Nooooooo, don't say that!!! I was on the fence about preordering it just to get the Memento. I didn't really want to order, but I wanted the AIDAN book like my life depended on it. So I ordered in the hope of this book being good. Now I don't even want to read it :-( Thanks for the review.
Yeah I agree with you! This book was awful! Poor world building so I was confused the entire book. One dimensional characters and a stale ass romance that’s a rip off from SJM. Yeah this book is trash
Nice review, but just to make one thing clear here: the mating bond is not a rip off from SJM. It existed earlier in Star Trek (between Vulcans), and before that it probably existed somewhere else. But being sci-fi, it is more likely the authors borrowed the idea from Star Trek.
What??? Oh no, I was super excited for this book :( This sucks, I'm sorry it was such a disappointment for you. I have already downloaded the audiobook, so I'm still going to give it a chance but ughhh. Ah, well. Thank you for the heads up, at least I won't go into it with a lot of expectations and knowing that see what it'll turn out to be...

I already read my First page ever of book called (I'll give you the sun) and I felt bored"
honestly, this is sort of relatable? I thought I hated reading until I was about 15 when I realized that I just hated required reading and I tentatively begun to read different genres until I found the kind of books that I like and then became obsessed from then on I guess lol hope you do too!!

I absolutely love AIDAN so I can really relate, but I unfortunately wasn’t invested in this story at all :/

I finally made it to 70% and I'm not hating it, but I'm not exactly loving it either? I'm tired of Cat's bullshit with Tyler. Kind of tired of how these kids' hormones work at the most inappropriate times. My tired ace ass is tired. I don't know if it's her narrator or what but I haven't really liked Auri from the beginning. The only one with real personality and definition is Finian and he clearly doesn't get enough page time. My question at the point would be, do all seven of them pair up? Because if they do, they're not all het relationships. Fin is clearly not het.

Oh my god, I’m reading it right now, and if I hear one more “holy cake” or “son of a biscuit”, I’m gonna rocket myself into the sun

Saaaaammme. I had to put it down at 70% because it was dragging me down a black slump hole.

I just got this book because I loved Illuminae soooo much that I assumed Aurora Rising would be just as good, if not better. But I trust your reviews so much that now I don’t have any expectations when going into it ugh what do i do :(

Ah man, I was reading the sample and that failed to grip me but I was hoping it would get better if I read on. But from the sounds of things it just gets worse (plus overdrawn girl on girl hate AND only het relationships??? In this economy??? No thanks). I was hoping it’d be like my Six of Crows of sci-fi in a sense but I’ll give it a pass
Just finished and its literally taken me 2 weeks to read because i like to finish what i started. I thought it was just me 😒

Girl, we definitely disagree on this one! I don't regret ordering it at all! But I also have to admit that it was the full-cast audiobook that made this an amazing book. So I'd say if you ever want to reread this book, go with the audiobook. I loved it!!!

Wow, I think this is the shortest review I’ve ever seen from you lol. Makes sense, blah books not being worth the effort of lengthy speech. Also, I’m not entirely sure about reading this book now lol *eyes book and debates returning it to the library* 😂
completely agree. I am so surprised at the amount of 5 star reviews on this book. Are you actually kidding me? People like this flaming pile of dogshit? I came specifically to give this book a 1 star. I had to force myself through this book. I saw someone call this a "sci-fi riverdale" yeah I second that statement 😤
I am only 116 pages into this book and am already disappointed!!! I don't see the point of Zila's 2 sentence chapters. I am bored AF with Tyler and Scarlett's character's and if I read "bee-bro" 1 MORE TIME!!!! *vomits*
I know Kal and Finnian are the only 2 pulling this book (I'm ok with Cat as well), but I don't think they can persuade me to continue......

Try the audio book! There are some sound manipulation that made this go from a meh to one of my favorites.
WRONG.
SO DARN WRONG.
I thought this was a brillriant book. I love the sass and emotion and fastpaced action. Idunno, maybe ur a thriller kinda gal, which is understandable, but honestly, reading all this negative things you said about this amazing book just made me angry.

@BuzyBee16 Learn to take some criticism, ya know not everyone’s bound to like the same things you do. I personally kind of hated this book but to each their own. I can see why people could like it, but honestly this book ticked off each and every one of the typical “teenagers in a sci-fi” cliches.
Doesn't matter what genre, what medium (book, television, or movie), I am SICK AND TIRED of the girl-on-girl hate trope and I am willing to bribe any author who wants to put that trash into a book... unless it turns into sapphic love.
Oh damn No this can't be happening this book is a huge anticipated book to read for me and also the sequel. Are you planning on reading the sequel?
It’s coming out next month and I literally cannot wait it sounds amazing!!!
