really liked it
bookshelves: 2018, classic, completist-book-club, library, coming-of-age, tear-jerkers

This story is cute, touching, heart-warming, tear-jerking. In other words, a classic!

The target audience is definitely not me. I would say it would be perfect for a teenage girl living in Canada in the early 1900s. That makes sense, because that is exactly what Anne is! However, the point of this obvious detail is that sometimes it is fun to read a classic and try to put your mind in the mindset of who it was written for at the time. A couple of the storylines seemed silly or to not make sense, but if I stopped and changed my mindset, it would click.

A bit of a history lesson combined with a well written story. If you haven't read this before, give it a shot and maybe you will find your inner early 1900s Canadian teenager!

Rich not my cup of tea to read

I read a bit about the sequels after I finished, but I think I will probably just stick with this one.

I figure a lot of people on my friends list may not have interest in this type of story.

Marie I haven't read the books, but I have seen the movies a long time ago and I really liked them. Something to watch on the lighter side of life. :)

Jenna If you were a young, bookish, imaginative girl who felt like she didn't fit in with her surroundings - this book was as great in 1980s Midwestern USA as it would have been in 1900s Canada!

P.K. Abbot I am a male in my sixties, and I have spent my entire life avoiding this book -- until last year.

I had a bias against it as a book intended for pre-teen girls, but, once I read it, I was delighted by Lucy Maude Montgomery's command of language, her deft turns of phrase, her vivid characters and descriptions, and her clever dialogue.

This book may not speak to everyone, but, primarily because of Montgomery's quality of writing, I rated it 5 stars...and wondered what took me so long to read it.

Melissa Great review, eh... ;)

She is pretty fun to read - and every chapter ending with her mother making a snarky comment about Anne talking so much - hilarious!

Yes, definitely lighter!

Ha! Yes, true! I don't remember a lot of girls around me reading this back when I was in middle school, but they probably were (especially since it was in the midwest during the time frame you mentioned! )

Great points and a cautionary tale to not avoid something just because a pre-conceived idea. You may find a lot of greatness you have been missing. This is why I have been doing my best to give everything a shot.

Thanks, eh! 😁🇨🇦

Ha! That's hilarious! I have done the exact same thing before. With me, I will complain about a character being a talkative know-it-all and my wife looks at me and is all like,"REALLY!?" 😂😂😂

Matthew Jillian wrote: "Ha ha! Yeah, it was pretty humbling. :P ;)"

*sigh* yeah!

Jeffrey Schmieder Great point about the history lesson. The life Anne had before Green Gables would have broken so many but she persevered and grew. Going to be visiting the home next month, can't wait.

I have talked to many people who have made a visit a part of their vacation. Enjoy!

Erin Clemence One of my all time favourites!! I was a teenage girl in Canada and I can tell you, it definitely made my top ten list!

That's awesome, Erin! Even though this story took place a long time ago, I am guessing that helped you relate quite a bit.

Wow - I didn't even realize there was a comic version of this one!

Lorna Matthew, a wonderful review of this timeless classic. Growing up in the Southwest, I too, was a big fan of the entire series. I loved Anne and the others as well. It may be time for a re-read!

If you do, I hope you love it just as much this time! :)

Suhailah Iskandar I'm not Canadian, but it's a great book. I was drawn to the title an Anne indeed spreads her wing to little mischief and adventure and found closure with the Cuthbert's. And I'm in my late 30's. Anne and Diana is my friendship goal and Matthew, an excellent father figure. I heart them all.
