Read 2 times. Last read October 11, 2019 to October 16, 2019.
Just re-read this deeply atmospheric gem of a novel and loved it just as much as the first time I read it! Probably even more since I have been thinking about this book for more than a year and couldn’t wait to get my hands on it again. I am absolutely gobsmacked by this riveting blend of historical fiction, adventure, horror and the folklore/myths of the Inuit people of the arctic circle. This was especially interesting to me since the long lost Northwest Passage expedition ship The Terror was just recently found in pristine condition under the freezing waters off Northern Canada - not even ten years after this book was written. This is one of those books that has you falling down all sorts of fascinating rabbit holes, researching and sorting fact from fiction. Simmons really did his homework on this spooky maritime tale.
It’s a door stopper at almost 800 pages, but you’re not going to be able to put it down. Grab a blanket, a cup of steaming hot tea and settle down in front of that fireplace for the journey of a lifetime. What a story! Highly recommend, one of my all-time favorite books ever.

I saw part of it, but missed the second half of the episodes due to traveling. I’ll definitely try to get through those at some point!

Dianne, thank you for your review. I am excited to pick this book up... and after your review, I will be reading this book next!
I have been lazy lately, rating my books with stars and no reviews. And after reading your comments this morning, I see how a review really can affect other Goodreads members. I always love your reviews! :)

Aww, thank you, Ellen. I hope you do read this, I can’t wait to hear what you think! I’d love to have someone to discuss this with.

I fell in love with the story of Ernest Shackleton and his men involved in a similar quest. You've really made me want to read this!

If you like those kinds of stories, you should enjoy this! It does have a horror fictional twist to it, but it fit the bones of the story very well. Give it a try - if you do, I’d love to hear what you think,

LOL! It’s a commitment for sure but one I was happy to make. Sometimes these big books immerse you so much in their world that you don’t want to come up for air. This was one of those for me - huge book hangover afterwards.

Fantastic review! I apologize if this has been answered in this previous thread, but I’m too lazy to read above #teacherbrain. But, have you watched the television adaptation? Curious on your compare/contrast of them 📚📚

Thank you for your kind words, Sandy.
I only caught a few episodes. I thought it was good, but definitely felt the book was better. The author took great care to describe the incredibly dangerous living conditions in the extreme cold of the arctic. It’s a small thing and silly but it drove me crazy in the miniseries to see the crew walking around outside without hats or gloves periodically. If you have the time and the interest, the book is the way to go.

Thank you Beata, Deanna and Kelli! Kelli, I am so happy you enjoyed this! I bet it made a hell of an audiobook. Did you happen to see the miniseries?
I absolutely loved this book!! To this day the true mystery of the Franklin Expedition is baffling. Simmons was so convincing in his writing that I can almost convince myself that The Terror is in fact an account of the historical events left behind by the crew, rather than a near perfect imagining of a world and history we know very little about. The Arctic will keep most of Franklin and crews secrets sadly. But the recent discovery of both ships reignites my deep interest in this great mystery! Can’t wait to see what truths they uncover!

I share your enthusiasm 100%! It’s actually stunning how accurately Simmons 2007 story predicted where the ships would be found in 2014 and 2016.

WHAT.A.REVIEW!!!!!!! Just stellar, Dianne! OK, I will be reading this for sure, but may have to buy a copy as I will assuredly run out of time if I request it from Libby App. Look how many books we share on our shelves. Close to a ton, I’d say. I’d love to share more thoughts and many more reviews with you, Dianne. Sending a friend request!
