Okay I’ll just say it, I really did not enjoy reading this collection. On the plus side Lauren Groff writes about women who do not feign happiness and who have interesting, often dark desires and feelings. I appreciated how this gender-related theme dispels notions of suburban/nuclear family-oriented happiness. At the same time, I found it difficult to care about or understand these stories. Her characters receive little background development and the stories consist of people engaging in pretty random gestures and thought patterns. Groff’s writing itself felt bland. There are many descriptions of nature, which did not strike me as particularly memorable. Onto the next book!

I feel like Groff should be extremely my jam, but I still haven't read more of her. Planning to start her new one today and anticipating I won't *love* it.

Awwww. I hope you are able to derive some meaning or satisfaction from her new novel even if you don't love it! Curious about what in particular about her writing makes you feel like it should be your jam too.
I'm not entirely sure! I don't read a ton of mainstream literary writers, but she hits that upper-middle-brow sweet spot I tend to like. I know I enjoyed this collection, but having read it 2 years ago, I can't say I remember any of the stories. She also doesn't write the same "type" of book twice, so I guess she's hit or miss for many readers. Still want to do Fates and Furies, though.
