Er...ok. So this is not going to be a complimentary review, as you've probably already guessed by the rating.

I am a character-driven reader. I don't necessarily have to love a character to bits, but if I can get behind him/her, then I will come along for the ride, and be willing to overlook a lot of things, like faulty plotting. If I don't like the character, well, then I enjoy the book less, and become somewhat cranky. I notice choppy plotting/not-very-good writing.

I am not a plot-driven reader, but sometimes, really good storytelling will keep me interested even when I dislike the characters.

This book failed on both fronts. I wanted to slap Rachel, the main character, almost from the beginning, and was praying someone would shoot her dead and put me out of my misery. I didn't see much likeable/ interesting/ redeemable about her. She was not intelligent - and since every other person was dumber than she was, it made for a rather stupid cast of characters. The secondary characters were also boring and annoying in turns.

Um... the story. It was published in 2004, (I'm guessing) in the infancy of UF. I don't know if it would have been considered cutting edge/excellent in it's time, but now that the genre has taken off, it is just bad prose and bad plotting.

And bad editing/copy-editing. There were some glaring errors I caught several times.

I do not think I will be reading more of the books in this series; it's not for me. I might try other books Kim Harrison has written, but probably later.

I don't recommend this one.

Tara that bad, huh??

Lady Jaye I didn't like it at all.

Hbeebti I had bought almost all the books thinking that I would enjoy them. I think I had 1-6 or 8, IDK.. Anyway I didnt enjoy the series myself. I just struggled with the characters. Maybe later I might try again but at this point nope.

Lady Jaye Oh no! I hate it when that happens!

Dee I didn't like this one either in fact I couldn't even finish it (which is very rare for me not to finish a book) and I only gave it 1 star....will be honest and say it put me off reading this author :(

Lady Jaye I continued because I read it for a challenge, Dee. :/
Did you ever try any more books by her?

message 7: by Dee (new) - added it

Dee no I couldn't bring myself to try anything else of her's again. I know some really like her books but this one really put me off.

Hbeebti Thank goodness Im not the only one. lol... Thankfully I took the books to a used book store and got credit for them , so that I could get something else.

That's lucky....I do hate spending my hard earned money and books that I don't end up reading!

LMAO! Okay, I'll stay away. Loved your review, Lady Jaye!

Lady Jaye Thanks, LK :)

Regina LJ I gave it a similar rating -- I think my review was something like - thank god this is over.

Lady Jaye Lol. I saw. I agree wholeheartedly. It truly was a relief to finally finish and not have to go back!

D.G. Totally agree with you on this one, LJ.

Maya I am reading this one and the beginning is starting to get on my nerves -.- It's just too slow...

Shari Stacy I just finished the first book, and I think Rachel is dumber than Stephanie Plum, which is saying something. Yet this is not supposed to be farce as the Evanovich novels are. I sure like Mr. and Mrs. Jinx though..

Hahaha!

You're welcome :D

Nitzan Schwarz Is it mean of me that I "whooped" while reading this review because, like you, I hated Rachel and I thought the plot kind of sucked? I did like Jenks, but every other character was just so meh.

Lady Jaye Nope, it's not. The book sucked

Nitzan Schwarz haha, yay! (I was despairing because I couldn't find anyone who thought it sucked like I did!)
If you're looking for a good UF, try Written in Red (The Others, #1) by Anne Bishop or one of Patricia Briggs series :)

Piper Langenfeld Personally I loved Rachel and after book 6 I’m still reading, so definitely personal preference
