bookshelves: juvenile-fiction, canadian-authors, classics, canadian-atlantic, own, 2023-reads, audiobook, school-days
Read 2 times. Last read June 30, 2023 to July 11, 2023.

Why I chose to listen to this audiobook:
1. a cousin loaned me her copies of the first three books in this series back when I was only 13-years-old. I remember enjoying them then, but I wanted to refresh my memory before continuing on with the rest of this series;
2. it is available for free on Hoopla; and,
3. July 2023 is my "O' Canada Month"!

Praises:
Author Lucy Maud Montgomery fleshes out her characters in a most heartwarming manner!
MC Anne Shirley - early on in the story, I had to empathize with this spirited young girl's unfortunate upbringing. I wonder if her overactive imagination was a matter of survival during her earlier neglectful years. I found her to be quite endearing with her dramatic, passionate and kindhearted qualities. Her descriptive love of nature and pure meditative joy over the most simple things helped me envision her natural surroundings. Even though adoptive guardian Marilla Cuthbert's sarcasm and criticalness and nosy, busybody neighbor Rachel Lynde's downright rudeness are perfect foils, it was satisfying to see how they were eventually won over by Anne's innocence. And although she held grudges at times, overall, Anne is a most winsome, delightful character!

Overall Thoughts:
Set on Prince Edward Island in the early 1880s, Montgomery used her childhood memories to write this classic. Her descriptive settings made me feel like I was a part of the Avonlea community.
One must be in the right frame of mind before reading this story. Don't expect a strong plot or villains set out to make Anne's life miserable. Written in 1908 with youngsters in mind, it is a lighthearted, pleasant read.

Nostalgia at its finest!

Darla Definitely a series that has held up over the years. Always delightful to reread. I have the entire series on my Kindle so I can take it anywhere. = )

I have the entire series as hardcopies, but since they are "pocketbook" size, they're easy to lug around! 😂

CoachJim This is an old review but I just saw it. I read these books to my daughters as young girls. I wish I could have visited Prince Edward Island. It sounded like a nice place.

Great review of a classic Debbie.

Thank you, Jim! Nope, not an old review - just posted it today. I did rate it back in 2019 because I read it as a kid, but I thought I could do a reread (or listen!) for my "O' Canada Month".
So nice to see that you read this classic to your daughters. I hope they enjoyed it as well.

Book2Dragon I missed this fabulous story as a child and youth. I caught up with her on the PBS production of wonderful, excellent actors. I later read some but not all of the books. On my TBR list.

I have most of these books on my WTR list as well. Lovely trip down Memory Lane! So nice to see you reading these now.

Lisa A childhood favorite that I fell in love with a second time when reading these books with our daughters! The world needs more of these lovely books.

I agree! Some readers didn't think these books were realistic, but at the time they were written, they probably were! Wholesome books are needed in today's world, although they might be classified under "Fantasy"! 😂😂

Libby Lovely review, Debbie. I haven't read the books, but the TV series is heartwarming. I love the scene at the beginning when Anne first meets Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert 🌹

Canadian Jen A Canadian Classic! It's been so many years but I adored this character growing up and these stories. Glad it still gave you the warm and fuzzies!

Thank you, Libby, for your warm thoughts. I don't think I've seen any films re: this particular book. I do remember; however, how a TV series ran several years ago here in Canada called Road to Avonlea. A sweet show, but it featured totally different characters than those in Anne of Green Gables.

Thanks, Jen! Yes, I remember those "warm fuzzy" feelings reading these books, but couldn't tell you what happened in them. It's a wonderful trip down Memory Lane. They are incredibly sweet!

Kat Lovely review, Debbie! Anne sounds like such a delightful character. I've seen some shows based on the books, but I've never read them!

It's a beloved classic, especially here in Canada.

Nina (ninjasbooks) Great review Debbie! I have to read this :)

Debbie W. Nina wrote: "Great review Debbie! I have to read this :)"

Thanks, Nina! It's a wonderful series many readers enjoyed in their younger years and loved rereading in later years. I do hope you get the chance to meet Miss Anne Shirley.

Margaret M - (too far behind to catch up although trying to spend more time on GR) Glad you enjoyed these two books. Excellent review Debbie 💖

Visiting the Maritime provinces is on my bucket list. I hope to do so next summer, and I'll be sure to visit the Green Gable sites!

Melissa (Trying to Catch Up) These books are so excellent as audiobooks. Even my son loved listening to them in the car despite his misgivings when he heard the title.

Thanks, Barbara! I'm so envious that as a Canadian myself, I have never visited this province! I hope to rectify that next summer! 🤞😊💚

C.J. Frederick Debbie W: Are you accepting ARC review requests? I am looking for ARC reviewers for my new novel. It is historical fiction genre, has some similarities to "Anne of Green Gables" as it features an underdog orphan boy and it's Canadian fiction. I have the ARC on Book Sirens: Sorry to trouble you if you're not interested. Cheers!
