The Terror

In 1845 Sir John Franklin lead an exhibition of two big ships and crews in search of the Arctic's fabled North West Passage - this splendidly created and surprisingly subversively horrific book is Dan Simmons' very detailed, and very believable, fictionalised version of what happened to the 129 men of this expedition; and it's a doozy of a story, another epic Simmons' piece of work. The killer thing is though, if you read about what has since been found from the Arctic and the wrecks, nearly all of Simmons' story is based on actual facts! 8.5 out of 12, frosty Four Stars.
And just to add... this is easily one of the most informative and interesting historical fiction books I have ever read! (It's the horror content that stops this getting Five Stars!)

I have no idea why this book is on my tbr list but it is, does it have any supernatural elements? Is that what you mean by horror? Also great review, Baba!

Thanks Yun, I didn't expect to get so absorbed in it as I did, which made me like it even more... for so thoroughly exceeding my expectations!

Thanks Nicole :)
There are sorts of supernatural elements, but nothing too over the top... so full of suspense and foreboding doom!

A good book, but a bit on the long side, still full of atomphear, which is always great for a horror

The length of the book had me leaving it on my TBR for years!

Great Review! I loved the book so much. I've read it when I was supposed to write my Bachelor's Theses... Well... I got kind of distracted and spent hours in the library to finish the book AND the theses 😂😂
I am always amazed at anyone that manages to read fiction AND study. When I was studying didn't read any fiction at all!
I had a 2 hour commute to uni and back. That made 4 hours train every day IF everything worked fine. So I just some of that time for reading/listening to books. But yes, I admit, sometime I got distracted by my reads 😏

Cool Feli... I do a lot of reading on my work commute on trains too :)

I have to agree with you, this is definitely one of the most Easily informative historical fictions I've ever read, especially as it's on a subject that is(was) definitely Not my cup of tea: ships and seafaring. But this was quite a page-turner. I'm really glad you enjoyed it!

You summed this book up perfectly Lady Mayfair, thank you :). I had pretty much zero interest in seafaring, the Arctic or 19th century expeditions, but this book had me riveted! If you haven't read Simmons' The Fifth Heart, I recommend it as another ridiculously well researched book on a less known historical past - The Gilded Age!

It hurts to agree, but yes, it could easily drop a hundred pages Mirnes.

Still great review though :)"
Hi Inci, I just felt the horror of the Antarctic was enough, so the book didn't need fantastical horror added.
