it was amazing
bookshelves: biography-memoir, politics, war, history, sequential-art

This is the "graphic biography" of a person of deep political conviction and passion, living through one of the most turbulent periods in history, and treats its subject with respect, depth and gravity. So it was with some surprise that I found Evans deftly weaving humour and romance into her story. Rosa emerges as a fully rounded person, her faults and inconsistencies shown alongside her humanity and fortitude.

Evans packs in a lot of information, both into the main work and into the notes, which to me is a great strength of the book: I read this because I want to know! The depiction of Rosa's assassination, and the brutal curtailing of her life and work, moved me to tears. Unequivocally 5🌟

I can't recommend it highly enough. I definitely want to read more about Luxemburg and her ideas now.

Manybooks I did enjoy this although it felt a bit textbook like for a graphic novel. But would have loved a book like this when we learned about Rosa Luxemburg in grade twelve social studies.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I liked the density of the prose; it put me in mind of Marx for Beginners by Rius.

But if the text were a bit less dense, this would also be a good introduction for younger readers, which I for one would find important as not only is Rosa Luxemburg not that well known in the English speaking world, she is also often rather majorly denigrated and despised. I guess I would love to see Red Rosa: A Graphic Biography of Rosa Luxemburg used in USA high school and junior college classrooms and the uproar that this would likely cause amongst the right wing.
