** spoiler alert ** What the actual HELL did I just read????

Girl's parents commit suicide. Girl is placed under care of her father's stepbrother, who lives in the mountains of Colorado with his two sons. Girl spends winter hopping from one of their beds to the other, before 'falling in love' with the one who's a psycho.

HERE'S WHY NONE OF THIS WORKED FOR ME:

❌ The relationships were not handled well AT ALL. The girl (Tiernan) has sex with her step-uncle Jake first, then step-cousin Noah, then other step-cousin Kaleb. It's just... well, it's hard to describe, but the moment she's finished having sex with Jake or Noah, all the lust that the author has spent ages building up fizzles out of her. It's really weird. But then at random moments, the lust comes back. I just don't understand it, but I can't really explain. Just take my word for it that the relationship dynamics are handled badly and illogically.

❌ Kaleb is a goddamned psychopath. Just trust me on this, as someone who usually loves psychopathic heroes (I gave 5 stars to The Silver Devil and I like Addison Cain, for f*ck's sake) he leaves them in the dust. He doesn't speak because of a 'childhood trauma', he does nothing but rape the heroine until she's convinced she likes it, and finally throws her birth control pills into the bin. If the author balanced this by showing us moments where he CARED about the heroine, I could have possibly tolerated it; I have a high threshold for dark heroes. But he doesn't give a crap about the heroine. HE SPITS ON HER, he slaps her, he throws food at her... Bloody hell.

❌ The 'love' in this book is a joke. Simply, the heroine has sex with three men, and then arbitrarily decides to fall in love with one of them over the other. That's it. There's no deeper reason. They never speak to each other, Kaleb isn't even in like half the book, he rapes her like it's going out of fashion... even when we get a chapter from his perspective, it's evident he feels nothing for the heroine besides a vague physical interest in her. THERE IS ZERO BASIS for their love and this book is not a romance.

❌ I have to say, I can't blame the heroine too much, because Tiernan is clearly suffering from intense mental disturbances and she honestly just needs professional help. It's not her fault - her parents never paid any attention to her. So of course, suddenly three attractive men are displaying interest in her, and she mistakes the Stockholm-esque nature of her feelings for Kaleb for love.

❌ This book is MISOGYNISTIC AS F*CK. It's all about every male in the book having an endless supply of slutty women while they pull a shotgun on a guy flirting with the heroine (whom obviously, the author makes into a baddie. So there isn't even any real option for the heroine). Tiernan thinks about telling the men how hypocritical they are, then sort of just forgets all about it. I wanted to reach into this book and strangle every male character in it.

❌ There's a plot-line about Kaleb possibly getting an OW pregnant. As if this dumpster fire of a book wasn't bad enough.

Think I'm going to stop there, but I've read and disliked Penelope Douglas's heroes before so I really should never have put myself through this torture. Stay the hell away.

Poppy As someone who loves all of PD's other books I have to agree with you on the whole Kaleb shit. I mean, I like bad guys, hell, I even love damon from devils night but,,,,,,,,,,,,there was literally NO substance to kaleb at all. He came in late, barely showed up after he WAS introduced, and everytime he did he acted like a Neanderthal, and not in a good way. They had literally no connection, that I just couldn't understand why she was falling for him? Why? He has literally no personality and the only times he does is to act like a literal child? I hated his character.

GimmeAllTheWerdssss Girl....please don’t tell me you went into this blind to the type of author P Douglas is??!! This is the only type of shit she writes! Nothing is safe, OW drama galore (seriously...one of her series includes a prostitute who all the guys share on a regular basis!!), and doormat heroines.....

Tracy *To the point Reviews* Sweet JEEEASUS! All this hate is making me curious? Is this normal? Stop the HATE! Its making me wanna see what all the hubbub is about dammit! It sounds awful! And yet...and yet... Dammit!
Great review!

One Book At A Time Wonderful review. Penelope Douglas is kind of newish to me. I read Bully last year and I have to say I loved it. To the point that I own an ebook copy. I read Birthday Girl and meh. The rest of her books I haven’t read. I was looking forward to this book though. But as soon as I read the blurb, I was like 'hell no'. This thing has threesome all over. I hate threesomes, reverse harem, etc. This book has no threesomes from what I can read in your review, but has other stuff that has me going 'no thank you'. I love dark romance, but I draw the line at certain things.

Viv “BookVixen” Gutierrez This book sounds absolutely horrific. Thanks for the amazing review so I can put this author on my “too fucked up” list

message 6: by Jessy (new)

Jessy OK there is no way I'm touching this book, but I'm curious:
- The heroine sleeps first with her father's step-brother and then with his sons???
- The "hero" rapes the heroine?!

JFC, is the point of writing books nowadays just creating as much drama as possible (even including disgusting plot lines)?

Veronica WordsAreMyDrinkOfChoice Amazing review!

Yes, you've summed up all my issues with his character... I really might have rated this book higher if she'd picked Noah instead

OMG that sounds horrible!!! I've only read one of her books before (Bully) and I didn't like it but I figured I should give her another chance... clearly writing this kind of book is a pattern for her and I'm definitely staying away in future

Thank you - and it does actually have threesomes!! I don't personally mind reverse harem, but I HATE it if the heroine has relationships with people she doesn't ultimately end up with, so that's actually another thing I hated about the book.

Namera [The Literary Invertebrate] Iqra wrote: "If he raped her I wouldn’t have finished this book :/ And I did. What does that say?"

It says that you don't consider a woman yelling that she's being hurt and she wants the man to get off her, then running to another room and locking the door to escape him, to be rape. To which I say, oookay...

Reader If you don’t mind me asking who wrote The Silver Devil? Great review btw!

Melissa Respect your opinion but the author did have a note in beginning of book about that stuff
I really enjoyed it

She warned it was 'dark', which I don't mind and quite like, but it wasn't just dark - honestly I found the relationships handled very badly. But I'm happy you enjoyed it!

♥ℳelody I'm sorry but did you say he spits on her and throws food at her?? And this is who gets the HEA? The raping part alone is a big fat NO but Jesus..... I wanna have words with this author. I don't comprehend how any of that should be considered rootable.

message 43: by Katie (new) - rated it 1 star

Katie (ksquaredreads) Thank you!!! I just finished this book and agree 100%. Honestly, I felt like this book was manipulative. It likes giving just enough sweet to make one feel like it was safe to keep going but then plunging ya into a big world of NO. And yes, it’s rape. I fail to see how nobody seems to notice that. Kaleb was just horrible.

message 48: by F san (new)

F san Great review! I agree with you mostly, I actually disliked this book because it was not a romance it was just porn with overdramatic soap opera. Although I disagree with you on the Tiernan part I think she should be held accountable for her choices she is no saint compared to the boys, the three of them experienced toxic parenting and horrible decision making in there own ways, just because she is a girl does not mean she should be handled with soft gloves compared to the boys. I held Jake, the most accountable he was TRASH. Honestly, I just don't like books where closes friends/family sleep with each other love interest.

message 49: by Celmisia (new)

Celmisia I could tell this book was a no-go for me. Glad I dodged the bullet with this one. I'm kind of on the fence with PD, I liked two of her books but disliked Bully even though my friend raved about it.
I thought Punk 57 was good but it's been a while so I don't know.
