The Silence of the Lambs (Hannibal Lecter, #2)

Much like the way Red Dragon opens to a scene with Will Graham, The Silence of the Lambs opens to Clarice Starling. It's a reminder that Will has left the life that tragically maimed him, both emotionally and physically, with memories that are tragic. Harris though, he never writes Clarice with the attempt to supplant Graham as our new hero. Like Will, she is our antihero of sorts. She is the unconventional, and therefore, very likable character. Human, as we are, with below the means family roots and upbringing. Using her past becomes her unexpected strength. That, and her uncanny ability to “see” what others miss. And because she's a woman, she has the advantage of seeing what men simply can't. Only a few people seem to realize this: Jack Crawford and Hannibal Lecter being the main two, and the only major characters carried over from the story by Harris. Jack Crawford immediately feels like a father figure to Clarice, keeping his distance at the same time. And Hannibal...well, he feels like Hannibal. The dark father figure, if you will. Unbelievably smart. All that brain power used to play the game, slowly biding time, waiting for a mistake is made. Here in Silence, I got to know him better. Pieces of him are revealed, while he adeptly picks choice memories from Clarice's past. She plays the game too. Finding “Buffalo Bill” will become more important for her than she can know.
I wouldn't have thought it possible to like Silence of the Lambs more than I had liked Red Dragon, but there it is. And I don't think I could find a real flaw in this story, even if I hunted for one.

I did as well, Supratim. Movie follows the book closely, but the book is even better.

Excellent review, Ron. Hannibal as “the dark father figure” - perfect. It has been many years since I read these, but your review triggered memories from both books. I seriously need to revisit Stephen King and Harris.
Fantastic review, Ron! I would never be able to sleep again if I read this, just seeing the name Clarice or the title of this book gives me shivers!
The movie creeped me out😱 I don’t think I could read this for fear I’d never sleep again! Nice review, Ron!

Thanks Indieflower! Loved how Harris used this kind of minimalist writing during some of the tense sequences, like Hannibal with the security guards. Great stuff.

Thank you Wyndy. The father figure (completely twisted of course) didn't strike me until I started the review. I heard someone mention how Hannibal sort of helped Clarice come to terms with her past too. Not sure about that, but I very much liked the look into her past.

Maybe that's why I didn't sleep well the other night! Haha, thank you Cheri. It's probably well known that Harris attended classes in Criminology and studied with the FBI for these books. It surely shows.

Because of some added detail, parts of the book even eclipsed the movie (and the movie was so good) Maureen - thank you!

I agree Terrie! They added a few things to the movie too (Hopkins and the famous fava beans, lotion in the basket), but most followed closely. Reading is like drinking caffeine. Thank you.

A perceptive review Ron ........ read this a long time ago and have forgotten a lot of the subtleties and nuances. I do remember it was a great (and frightening) book though. Yet another for the 'to read again' pile :)

Thank you Richard. The mentioning of subtleties reminds me of the writing in this book. Sometimes the action and characters come with gusto, but at others it is so quietly good and smart.

I heard that too Diana, but I believe it started already. Thank you!

Great review, Ron! I loved the movie and recently got hooked on Hannibal the series. Hoping to read The Red Dragon sometime this year.

Thanks Marilyn! I forgot the actors name (who played Lecter in that series), but wow he is good. The book Red Dragon, and this one, really put you in the middle of it. So visual.

I cannot wait to read these books, I am so glad you loved this one even more than Red Dragon! You have made me even more excited to pick them up! Wonderful review Ron! 😊

It truly was close, but Harris created a masterpiece here that is hard to beat Ellie. Both novels will probably grab you from their beginning and you remind me to return to the series. Thanks!
