The book is well-written with some very convincing passages that describe the telepathic abilities of a special breed of vampires but it drags for the most part, it's just too damn long!
I can handle long. IT by Stephen King is of similar length and that flew by, but this has crazy amounts of filler that are an effort to get through. As the story progresses it becomes more and more corny with lots of cheesey dialogue.
The bad guys are pretty interesting and have such an ambivalent attitude to murders that I carried on reading just to enjoy their eventual downfall.
I'd also like to point out that I never found this book scary at all, I was expecting a proper horror novel and never got it; I don't know why Stephen King considers it on of the best horror novels of the 20th century .
For horror fans, look elsewhere. For action/suspense fans who are looking a supernatural element, check it out.

"Taken a small bite out of this chunker and I've got to say, I'm really enjoying it so far.
It's very unpredictable and the characters are really good.
I'm going away on holiday tomorrow for a week, so hopefully I'll be able to put my feet up and get more of it read."

I have a coworker who favorite author is Dan Simmons I've read 2 or 3 of his books because my respect for him. I think Simmons is a great well versed author with sci-fi, horror and historical fiction best sellers. I agree he write a long story. I have carrion comfort, drood, the terror and even Hyperion on my tbr and bookshelf at home but having trouble getting them started.

I'm really looking forward to checking out Hyperion.
In the meantime though, i highly recommend The Terror. That book is absolutely brilliant.

I like this one a lot but I agree that it’s way overwritten (a complaint a rarely have; I like long detailed books) and also more of a thriller than horror. Hyperion and Drood are my favorite Simmons, some days in that order, some days not, lol.
I 100% agree. I’m a little over halfway through, and while it’s interesting, it isn’t quite interesting enough. I find myself only really a couple of pages and then putting it down to do other tasks because it can’t hold my attention. I go through books pretty quickly (and with King being my favorite author, I’m no stranger to long books) but this one is just DRAGGING. I’m going to get through it eventually, but it’s just at a much slower pace than my usual.
