really liked it

Sea of Tranquility is told in shifting timelines with different characters. In the timeline with Mirella, there are a bunch of different characters introduced in a relatively short period of time. To add to the confusion of this, there is a character named Vincent. However, Vincent is a female. I kept reading the passage over and over, not understanding what I was missing because I thought “she” must be referring to someone else.

The first 40% of this book was slow. However, by the 60% mark, I couldn’t put the book down. There were also some interesting concepts discussed.

The ending was not all that I wanted it to be. I still had questions. Three questions to be specific which I won’t post here because I don’t want to spoil this book for anyone. But if you want to know, feel free to DM me.

Overall, a solid fantasy book that took a little bit of time to warm up, and I look forward to reading more from this author.

HBalikov Glad, Lisa, that it was worth hanging in and finishing.

Lisa of Troy Thanks, HBalikov! There are a lot of characters to keep track of but it paid off in the end! :)

message 5: by JanB (new) - added it

JanB I’ll be reading this one soon. I didn’t like Station Eleven but loved the Glass Hotel so I’m anxious to see what I think.

message 6: by Jade (new)

Jade Saul Awesome review and happy that it was a winnner

Lisa of Troy Thanks, Safa! It is definitely interesting once it gets going! Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Lisa of Troy Thanks, Tina! Hope you are enjoying your current read! :)

Lisa of Troy Hope you enjoy this one, Jan! I haven't read any other works by this author so I didn't have any expectations, but I will keep my eye out for your review to see what you think!

Lisa of Troy Thanks, Jayson! Hope you are enjoying your week of reading!

message 11: by Catherine (new) - added it

Catherine (alternativelytitledbooks) - even more behind! I need to get to the author’s first two books so I can dive into this one! Excellent review, Lisa!

Kat (Books are Comfort Food) Glad this was a winner in the end, Lisa. Wonderful review and I’m glad you did enjoy it. 💕

Lisa of Troy Thanks, Catherine! This was my first work by Mendel. It might have been easier for me to read this if I read her other works first. There were so many different characters, new characters for every time period. Not only new characters but entirely new sets of characters! There were several times I was like, "And who is that again?"

Lisa of Troy Thanks, Kat! This one surprised me! Hope you are enjoying your current reads!

message 15: by Diane (new)

Diane Wallace Great review, Lisa! ;)

Sujoya(theoverbookedbibliophile) Great review, Lisa! Glad you enjoyed this one despite the flaws!

message 18: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Ansbro Was there a reason why a female character was given a boy's name, Lisa?
Confusing, to say the least.
Excellent review!

message 19: by NILTON (new)

NILTON TEIXEIRA Great review, Lisa!
I just received a copy from the library.

Sarah I am curious about your questions and in case anyone else hasn’t read Mandel’s The Glass Hotel already, that would help with some of the characters in this book immensely.

message 21: by L'Wanda (new) - added it

L'Wanda Greenlaw Thanks for the review. I would suggest reading The Glass Hotel by the same author and then you will understand Vincent better😊. She does take a while to get the reader warmed up, but does manage to keep the reader captivated!

Nancy (playing catch-up) Despite a slow start, I’m glad you ended up enjoying it, Lisa.

Holly Yeah the author definitely did not account for the fact that people who have not read The Glass Hotel would not immediately realize Vincent is a girl. I am curious about what your questions were so I'll DM you :)

Julia Sofia Vincent, her brother Paul and Mirella were all characters from the authors previous novel 'the glass hotel'. Shame that this book gives away most of the plot already of you wanted to read it afterwards

message 25: by Gina (new) - rated it 4 stars

Gina DiGiovine Goodwin Good review. I felt the same about the ending and wanted a bit more of an answer to the central question.

message 26: by Bryce Crisel (new) - added it

Bryce Crisel how is this book.

message 27: by Paul (new)

Paul Magnussen You might consider skipping The Da Vinci Code—the contrast in quality with the others is just too hideous.

Isaac The time period with Mirella and Vincent functions as a bit of a sequel to her previous book, The Glass Hotel. I can see how it's confusing if you haven't read that one, but if you have, it will be pretty clear.

message 29: by Teri (new) - rated it 5 stars

Teri Donovan Had you read the 3 books in proper order you wouldn't be confused. Or maybe you would be just because. But I read them in order and they all made sense.

message 30: by Morgan (new)

Morgan Fantasy is not my thing, but your review was grand.

Lisa of Troy It took me a while to embrace fantasy, but when I started to list out my favorite books and authors, I noticed that there was more and more fantasy until I couldn't deny it anymore.....

Chris The name for Vincent was confusing to me as well, however the author did state when she was introduced that Vincent is a female and notes how strange that is.

message 33: by Jenny (new) - added it

Jenny I'm so glad I found this review, I was about to quit in only chapter 2, but I'll keep going and see if it sorts itself out.
I'm taking notes, SO many notes :/

message 34: by Gayle (new) - added it

Gayle Vincent is frimm her other novels. She does that regularly.

Paul (Life In The Slow Lane) Well I'm glad I'm not the only one who found this book confusing, and slow, to begin with.

message 36: by Jeff (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jeff Bebee It did take some effort to keep track of the 4 different timelines and characters of the first 4 chapters. Somewhere in the 3rd chapter I recognized that Gaspery was involved in all the story lines, and things started becoming clearer. This experience was similar with Dickens’ “A Tale of Two Cities”; it was worth the effort of keeping different storylines in mind because they all start coming together.

message 37: by Jenna (new) - added it

Jenna Fab book I loved to finshed the book.
Lisa do you want to be my friend ?x

David Frisch Solid December 2023 pick.

message 39: by Matt (new) - rated it 4 stars

Matt Lemains What were your questions?

August Rackham You were confused by a name so much you had to read a passage over and over? It's really not that difficult. Names don't have genders.

ther3sa Vincent is a character from her previous work “The Glass Hotel.” Her brother Paul Smith is also in that novel.

Stephanie I also have a few questions regarding the ending but don’t want to post spoilers.

message 43: by Dana (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dana Vincent is in a previous book! I could see where that would be really confusing.

message 44: by Tim (new) - added it

Tim Baird Your March, April and November reads are among my favorite reads. I need to tackle this one, having read “The Glass Hotel.”

Sea of Tranquility I like the title of this book so much that I’m going to change my name and profile picture in honor of Space Exploration

message 46: by Jenna (new) - added it

Jenna Doo change it love it's lush 😀 xx

Julie Klingman Rector I agree with most of your review. I thought the first half of the book was so slow-moving, I stopped reading (actually, listening on Audible) for awhile, and then I couldn’t really remember what was happening. I tried to refresh my memory by reading some summaries, but they gave away plot points I hadn’t yet reached. I thought the ending was underwhelming, too (maybe because I’d found out too much). I’m interested in your 3 questions!

Holly Names aren’t gendered. I feel like spending more than 30 seconds on figuring that out is a lot. 😅

Keith Dodge The Color Purple and The Secret History are both outstanding. Hope you enjoyed them!
