It took me a year to get through it. Literally a year.

Ugh. I'm off for a lie down. I feel like I've been beaten over the head with a dictionary.

Michael McLellan I struggled with this book for the better part of my life before I finally finished it.

Andy Marr I got to chapter fifty, Michael. I tried my little heart out, I swear, but I just can't struggle through another 400 pages.

Michael McLellan Ha ha, I really wish I had the time back. There's a wonderful story here, but for me it's buried under too many words.

Andy Marr SO MANY WORDS! 🙀

Kat Kudos to you for trying, Andy. Dense and wordy is painful to read! 😬

message 6: by Marquise (new)

Marquise I tried and failed twice!

message 7: by Terrie (new)

Terrie Robinson (short break) Yikes! I don’t blame you raising the white flag, Andy. The number of pages would have done me in…writing I can’t understand w/o a dictionary as a constant companion is def NO.😵‍💫 BTW, love your concise review!😉

Axl Oswaldo Oh Andy, I can feel what you say. I do love this book, but the first time I read it was in translation (I read it in Spanish), and I remember it was even a compelling reading, not difficult or wordy for the most part. Now I picked it up again with a book club, but this time in its original English, and holy cow!, I just can't – it's outrageously tedious, kinda boring, this is not the Moby Dick I remembered. I'm on chapter 78, the whole group has finished the reading like two weeks ago, and I just need to finish it and to be able to say 'a book in translation and a book in its original language are two different worlds.' First time doing this, by the way, and probably the last one for a while. 😢

Terence M - [Quot libros, quam breve tempus!] A worthwhile effort even trying to read/listen this monster, Andy. I tried as a young lad (12?) and I had to give it away, too! Mind you, I was in a seminary at the time and I think maybe the good Fathers might have influenced me to drop it.:)

Colin Baldwin Phew! So good to see I’m not alone with my disappointment in this one!!!

Neale You are not alone on the ship with this one Andy! I think that it's secretly an instruction manual on whaling. :-)

LiLi Instruction manual on whaling is about what I expect. This is on my TBR, but I'm still recovering from _Two Years before the Mast_.

Kyle C. Try again.

message 16: by Flo (new) - rated it 3 stars

Flo It is so hard when to dnf or not a book like Moby Dick. I pushed forward and I don't feel like I won. :))

Nora Currie I had a very hard time reading this book too. I remember that I got very distracted by the fascinating footnotes and therefore I had to skim until I got to the end of the book.

Federico DN Wimp xD
