DNF @ 20%

I’ve enjoyed the author’s previous books but found this to be a slog. The characters, the writing, the dual timeline, and the magical realism did not work for me. I made it to 20% only because I was a captive audience on a flight.

message 6: by Lit with Leigh (new)

Lit with Leigh LOL when you're trapped and have nothing else to do and you still can't grind through it 😂😂😂 I feel for ya

message 7: by Bianca (new)

Bianca It doesn't sound like something it'd appeal to me either.

message 8: by Jayme (new)

Jayme That magical realism again! Maybe, it is just not for us!! 💕

Marilyn (recuperating from hip replacement surgery Thanks for your informative review, Jan! I was on the fence about reading this one. Magical realism usually doesn’t work for me either.

Margaret M - (too far behind to catch up although trying to spend more time on GR) Magical realism is not for you then!!! I didn’t think so although I do think this is a tough genre to get into because it flips (as the name suggests) between events, people and themes that are very real and then all of a sudden we have the fantasy, weird and sometimes bonkers. Whereas when I read Fantasy all of it is unreal, like dragons, half humans etc.. put anything implausible into crime / thrillers and I’ll jump on it. How our brain works 🤣 I hope you enjoy your next one Jan 💖

Kevin Ansbro I share your disappointment, Jan.
I'm usually a loyal fan of Kidd's brand of dark, impish, magical realism, but this wasn't one of her best, I feel.
Her debut novel (Himself) is still my favourite.

message 12: by Jenna (new) - rated it 1 star

Jenna ❤ ❀ ❤ Good on you for throwing in the towel rather than forcing yourself through it, Jan. My library hold is available for me soon. Here's me knocking down my expectations of it....

message 13: by Debra (new) - added it

Debra On to more enjoyable books, Jan!

Dorie - Cats&Books :) Another DNF to add to the pile, I did not like his previous book so didn't request this one. Hope you are enjoying your vacation :)

message 15: by Jayne (new)

Jayne Always appreciate and highly value honest reviews, Jan. I would have "jumped ship" on "The Night Ship", too. I hope that your next read earns 5 stars!

message 16: by Ellie (new) - added it

Ellie Spencer (catching up from hiatus) Oh no, I am so sorry that this one was a miss for you Jan! I have it on my tbr pile but won't be rushing to read it! Thank you for your honesty! 🧡

Ceecee Onwards and upwards 💙

message 18: by Catherine (new) - added it

Catherine (alternativelytitledbooks) - so very behind! Oh no! You’ve been in the trenches lately Jan. I’m a bit nervous about this now since magical realism is hit or miss for me, so I may start with one of her other books. Hope you love your next read!!💞

Canadian Jen Sorry you didn’t like it more, Jan. Onwards!

Isn't that the worst? To be caught with only a book that sucks? Luckily I had CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM downloaded 😂

I've really enjoyed the author's previous books so I gave it a chance, but they can't all be winners.

That is a very good point Margaret! I have enjoyed a few magical realism stories, including the author's previous books. Harry's Trees and Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance. I wish I could figure out what I loved about those that made them different?

But with a mystery or thriller, I'm with you. My tipping point is a low one 😉

Thanks Margaret!

Maybe going in with low expectations is the way to go. Mine were high after loving her previous books :(

I look forward to your thoughts!

Zoeytron I have liked Jess Kidd's other novels, so I might go ahead and check this out. Good review, and kudos to you for not finishing something you weren't enjoying.

Meredith (Trying to catch up!) Sorry this didn't work for you, Jan. I hope your next book is much more enjoyable!
