it was amazing

This book floored me. I don't know how else to say it. The audiobook was the way to go with this one, as the author's performance of the book just makes it. I'm not a Southern Baptist by any stretch, but I did her studies when I was younger. I've since grown deeper in Lutheran theology, but have followed her story, especially when people got so upset at her for speaking up against sexual abuse being swept under the rug. It's hard to understand women's ministry in any denomination in American Christianity without understanding the influence of Beth Moore over the last several decades.

I had no idea. I was not prepared for what I read. I expected Southern Baptist drama, and I expected her to share about her abuse in her childhood, and her rise in her writing and speaking, and the pushback that she got, and the pain of finding a new church. I was not prepared for the thread of her husband Keith, who she's always been pretty quiet about. He gave her permission to share the story, which she handled with honesty and grace.

Beth's story reminded me a bit of the disciple Peter. Boldness and humility, walking on water and sinking, about to drown. Profound and clumsy, running and tripping, endearing and exasperating, totally enraptured with the person of Jesus.

The stories of God’s faithfulness to her family—most especially to her husband, had me weeping by the epilogue.

To the whole Moore family, thank you for letting her tell this story.

Diana Excellent review. I feel very similarly about this book. Just wonderful!

Jill A beautiful review! Thank you

Morelandmama I just finished this book. Your review is so thoughtful and well worded!

Georgie Your review hits the mark of my thoughts. I thoroughly enjoyed it and was floored by parts of it.

Bunny I agree.

Susan Joslin I am glad I read this book and now know the truth as to why Beth left the SBC. I commend her for standing strong in her faith in God and for the courage to write this book. I have completed several of her Bible studies; in fact my Bible study group is getting ready to start Daniel (one of her earliest studies). I’m glad she is still writing and presenting live Bible teaching events.
This book is worth reading or listen to the audio. I did both together.

Erin Genua Yes! You’ve put so many of my thoughts to words. Thank you!

Christina Botchway A beautiful review. My thoughts exactly. Keith's story was particularly impactful.

Sheila I just finished this audiobook today. Wow! What an amazing story of faith. Your review captures it so well. Glad I picked this one up.

Kerry Perfect review

Donna I agree with your review! I didn’t know about her problems with the SBC. The acceptance of sexual harassment was just despicable!

Jeniffer Johnson I’ve done several of her studies, been to a few of her conferences; and love her teaching. She is honest; brave and endearing. I am not sure what I expected when i got this; but the first several chapters were difficult to keep reading. I like to know family heritage as the next person; yet felt the writing and descriptions of her grandmother were never ending.
I know about her problems with the SBC and wasn’t expecting that to be covered in this- which it wasn’t.
I do love that she got her house in the woods that was a replica of her husbands church as a kid.

Peggy Haymes She explicitly talked about the issues with the SBC.

AmyinQC I laughed and I cried. Sometimes all at the same time. Floored by how beautifully and respectfully she handled her family's tale. She's a magnificent story teller. And her faith.....I'm going to read it again and again.

DiHeil Indeed this is a perfect review. I don't listen to books hardly ever, but was told I had to listen because Beth was talking and it was impactful. Everyone needs to hear her reading this, telling us her story. Excellent book!

Stephanie Perfectly stated. Excellent review.

Melissa I am only 40% done listening to the audio book. I see that this book has such good reviews so I am going to keep at it. Right now I am not loving it but I trust everyone’s positive comments!

Kara Schaller Absolutely agree that the audiobook is the way to go on this one! I’m not normally a big memoir fan, but as someone who did many of her early studies, I am so glad I read/listened to hers.

Peggy O'Leary I enjoyed reading this book very much. I can relate to the honest messiness of her life. I appreciate her writing so much and it helped me to understand where she came from.

Machelle Wow! Based on this review, you may need to write your own book. Perhaps you already have?
