it was ok

if we’re being honest, it’s probably a 3 star. But the author was completely obsessed with fatness, it was beyond distracting. Constantly though out the text, Aunt Susie couldn’t do anything without us being told how fat she is, how her body hefts, how she looked like a cow, her fingers are sausage-like, ect. Other characters got this treatment too, generally if they were immoral figures. Weirdly, the good people tended to be noted as slender. It’s just like…there’s a mass poisoning event and you seem very very occupied with making sure I understand that the murderous midwife is plus-size.

Nancy Mills I’m reading it now, and she sure does make a big deal out of how fat Auntie Suzy is. To give the author the benefit of the doubt, it does drive home the point that the midwife takes whatever she wants from the villagers; they may be cold and hungry but she feels she is entitled to anything she wants

taeli Thank you, I have been noticing this as well, while I'm reading. It's really frustrating.

Lisa Black Yes!! I like everything else about the book, but it seems like the author refers to Suzy's weight in every single paragraph!

Hleu I think we could start a drinking game for every time the word waddled was used. It was very distracting.

Lisa Barrett I think she referenced auntie Suzy’s size to illustrate how she was living high on the hog while the rest of the town could was not
