Given the number or 5 star reviews of this book, I'm just going to conclude that either I'm not the right audience or it's not the right time for me. It was really good for almost 200 pages, then quickly devolved into a long, strange trip, as Jerry Garcia might say. I mostly skimmed the last third of the pages, mainly to see where it was headed. I got no satisfaction, other than to say I was finished.

Ken Alas, there'll never be agreement on any book. I was the outlier bored by Kingsolver's Demon Copperhead (or whatever it was called). Glad you liked parts at least!

Diane Barnes First 50% of the book was great.

♥ Sandi ❣	Ut Oh! One of my next books - sigh!

Diane Barnes We'll see what you think, Sandi.

Grab your compass for the North Woods and keep an open mind, Sandi. Oh. And don't forget the GORP (Good Old Raisins and Peanuts). ;-)

Cathrine ☯️ Oh well. I loved it. Next . . .

Diane Barnes I know you did, Cathrine, so was surprised that I lost interest in the second half. As I said, could be my timing.

Antoinette This book is everywhere in the ratings. I will give it a pass for sure after your response to it.

Canadian Jen It wasn't for me either, Diane.

Diane Barnes I really liked another book of his, The Winter Soldier, but this just didn't hit it for me.

Charlene I understand your review, Diane! It was a very different take on a historical novel than usual . . . I struggled and almost put it aside for the first 75 pages, then seemed to fall more into the storytelling. But while I was struggling, I put a library hold on what I think will be a traditional historical novel by John Ehle.

Diane Barnes Ehle is is sure winner Charlene.

Karen It had its moments for me… but it was more of a three star .. ..
It took me forever to finish!

Terrie Robinson (short break) Sorry this wasn’t a book for you, Diane, and I hope your current read is terrific!

Diane Barnes Up and down reading Karen. Some good parts, then I was lost, not a consistent feeling at all.

Diane Barnes It happens Terrie. We can never tell til we open it up.

Andrew Diane I felt the same way as you! I had to skim near the end it lost me!

Diane Barnes Glad to know it wasn't just me.

message 19: by Bill (new) - added it

Bill I agree. I was glad to be done with it.

Karin.vanattia I agree with you.

Louise Chiming in to say I'm in total agreement. If it weren't for this being a book club selection, I wouldn't have finished it.

Diane Barnes Thanks Louise. Its good to know I'm not alone in my opinion.

Jenna ❤ ❀ ❤ Hmmmm... I just read 2 chapters and am not sure about it. So many glowing reviews but I have a feeling it will be mediocre for me too. Based on your review, I think I'll go with my feelings and dnf it. Thanks for being honest!

Lorna Diane, once again we’re outliers with this novel. Oh my, I am just happy to have escaped the North Woods! 😱

Diane Barnes Happy to have corroboration on this one, Lorna.

Taury I felt the same. Always nice to know it wasn’t just me

message 27: by Linda (new)

Linda You got further than I did, I threw in the towel.

Diane Barnes There are more of us than I thought. It got a lot of love from a lot of others though.

message 29: by Sheryl (new)

Sheryl Ruzek Exactly my views as well.
