it was amazing

These stories are, individually, mind-blowingly good - in concert, they are little short of breathtaking. This is science fiction at its very best, and its avoidance of simple answers satisfies me deeply. I can't wait to read the next book.

Jonathan Peto I'm looking forward to your review. A copy of it rests on my bookshelf, waiting for me.

Michael Wonderful review!

Maybe I should join along in your journey. A big gap in my reading, lying there to be harvested like Easter eggs.

Guillermo Glad you enjoyed this. I ve added The Decameron to my never ending tbr list. I had never heard of it till your mention, so thanks! What was your favorite tale?

Michael Great review! Another reviewer I'm following said that Hyperion was so good, that it went back in time and changed the ratings of their other books. I thought that was a great way of phrasing it.

Megan Baxter Thank you!

It's hard to pick one, Guillermo, but either the Priest's Tale, or Sol's story of his daughter. Yours?

That is a great way of phrasing it!

Guillermo I also think the Priests tale was my favorite, with an honorable mention to the action packed Soldier's tale with Kassad.

El You had me at "science fiction riff" on The Decameron. Even taking that statement with a grain of salt, I'm interested.

Dustin Wow, fantastic review, Megan!!:)

Álvaro Velasco I agree completelly with your review. Don´t you thing the story of the soldier is one of the most beautiful love stories ever told?

Dan Schwent I hope you already have Fall of Hyperion close by.

Maciek I also want to read Hyperion! Your review mobilized me to pushing it to the front of my TBR! :)

ha, you should, it's the best piece of science fiction I read in years. Its a pity that rest of the books in series arent THAT good (i mean they are great, but Hyperion is simply a masterpiece). I personaly started reading it in bookshop and just ended buying it after 10 pages.

Mike Very nice review. I totally concur with the Chaucer sentiment, but had not considered The Decameron - good point.

I've not had the time to write a review for this and many other books that I read pre-Goodreads. If I had to "steal" from one, this would be it.

Megan Baxter Thanks, everyone!

Dan, I don't have the next book to hand, but I am eager to read it.

I'm glad to hear so many other people have loved this one as well!

Becky These books are what brought me back to scifi.

message 17: by Dan (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dan Schwent Me too. I binged on Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun and John C. Wright's Golden Age trilogy upon completing this.

message 18: by Stephen (new)

Stephen Gordon Yeah it is definitely his best work, although everything he writes is amazing. After reading Ilium and Olympos I was inspired to read the Iliad and the Odyssey I'm glad I did!

Max do you really consider this stuff a masterpiece? I have just finished it and I thank God I survived it. So boring and slow. This is obviously only my opinion, but if I had know it before I would have never started.

Megan Baxter I really do! But we all have different reactions to books.

Crumb I noticed on your profile that you have an affinity for sci-fi.. can you recommend any good cyberpunk books? I need to read one for a challenge.

I'm fond of the book Altered Carbon. (Haven't seen the new show.). Very recently, Madeleine Ashby's been making some interesting forays into the genre. I'm reading Company Town right now, and it would definitely fit the bill.
