The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie

Hit the snooze button. Because you won't wanna wake up early to finish this trite piece of over-celebrated frump. Miss Jean Brodie is the kind of co-dependent teacher that smart kids steer clear of -- except here she attracts otherwise likable school girls and prods them along this tiresome plot like dying heifers. Spark's flat characters repeat the same dumb one-liners until you wonder how anyone ever thought this author was clever. One student dies in a fire. Another joins a nunnery. But when compared to carrying on as a character in this book, those both seem like pretty attractive options to me. But perhaps this book did teach me something valuable about myself -- there is a limit to what I will tolerate in the name of culture, classics, and feminism. This book lies somewhere far beyond.

I couldn't have said it better myself! I am finding myself in the minority, but I really detested this book for all the reasons you have so succinctly stated.
I am so with you on this and I've decided to stop torturing myself and not finish the book. I can't remember the last time I didn't finish a book, especially one so short...
MN I am looking for Scottish writers/books to read, and this is the 5th book.from the top of the list published by UK, that the readers have reviewed negatively. Now I am wondering, which book to read. I have never been to Scotland or Europe for that matter, but I am interested in reading something interesting. I have read some of the lighter novels of the Scotland Street series.
Thank you for posting this. It's always interesting to read another point of view. Your review was funny too. I think you may have overstated your case, though... The exploration of charismatic power is trite? The author of 'Memento Mori' and 'The Abess of Crewe' isn't clever? Hmm...
I so wanted to like this book. I selected it because it was featured in an Alexander McCall Smith novel and I have pretty much read everything that man has ever written. If he published a book of grocery lists I'd read that.
But I tapped out and DNF around 67% but I'd truly stopped reading and started skimming around 50% It's a rather short novel and I tried to hang in there, reading in spurts over the past couple of days until I finally gave myself permission to quit.
Quite possibly the most boring thing I've read in the past 5 years. Repetitive and difficult to follow despite having next to no plot.
