it was ok

Oh boy. This book started off so strong! I read for the characters, and I seriously struggled with this one about 30% in.

Diem has long straddled the line of unsympathetic MC for me and this cinched it because she made many unwise, really illogical decisions, which I get were part of her character arc, but I think what the book needed were moments of the reader actually liking her once or twice between 35% to 80%. Because it's first person and she's completely unlikable as she treats her friends and family in petulant, rude ways, it was very hard to stay engaged. Her treatment of Luther was bizarre and cruel, which made it very hard to buy her "empathetic queen of the people" persona. I found myself yelling at my Kindle and threatening to throw it out my window multiple times because of how frustratingly unbelievable her actions were.

The "I'm going to save everyone" bit, especially for the ball and the Guardians - that really just ruined my suspension of disbelief. It's completely fine if Diem thinks up an asinine idea to give away her entire country's state secrets to save 200 terrorists. What I couldn't believe is that LUTHER, who this entire time was being set up as the guy who was raised to be a smart king, thought of that brilliant idea. His blind need to agree with Diem on every turn and do whatever she needs without question pushed him into simping territory for me sadly, as he seemed to completely lose his spine around her.

I won't even get started on Henri, Aemonn, and the very confusing love square (?) that was going on.

I think my greatest issue, though, was the lack of setup and payoff. Diem's father dying one scene after we see him for the first time in a while held no emotional impact for me because there was no foreshadowing that that was about to happen. I would have loved a few more scenes with him. We see so little of him throughout both books, and most of his lines are remembrance lines that Diem remembers, so his death felt hollow and I couldn't relate to Diem and Teller's grief. There were moments when I felt things were just happening to the characters because it needed to move the plot, which really pulled me out of the novel.

I don't usually write long scathing reviews but it's clear that Penn Cole has put in a lot of effort for it to be at the level of Maas and Broadbent, and I think it's absolutely doable. Just at a macro level, I think the characterizations need major work to stay engaging.

Bhavina! Honestly, I liked every other character other than Diem

Lacie Weisz THANK YOU. Diem was awful. I honestly thought we'd be getting rid of Henri in the first part of the book but nooooo. I've never been so upset with a book because there's so much potential!! It was just wrong.

Kerri I LOATHE Diem. I have never hated an FMC more.

Pamelia I feel so seen reading this review. I’m 45% in and I’m like…. How how how does this book have 4.10 stars???? It’s just awful. It doesn’t even come close to delivering on a MAAS comparable book/series level. Diem is intolerable. She feels bi-polar in her emotions, inner dialogue, she’s never stable just bounces from rage to sorrow to guilt to lust to insecurities. Dear god put this girl in therapy and on meds! I’m ready to dnf at this point. I’m disappointed because I can see the potential with the world building and the set up. Honestly everything could be brilliant if Diem wasn’t ruined. I often believe that this bloated and drawn out character arc is a consequence of the Kindle Unlimited Royalties for authors. They over write everything to extend stories way beyond what’s in the best interest of the story to make a bigger profit. This becomes really obvious when compared to traditionally published books. You know a good editor would have taken Ms Cole to task over this writing and had her leave a good portion of the story we have here on the editing room floor. Kindle Unlimited's Royalties is ruining storytelling!

Ramona H Why was this not marked for containing spoilers?! Thanks didnt needed to know that her dad dies

Dia Farah Thanks for the review, am wanted to read the second book to see if she gets better but guess not so am out

Hiranmayi Rajeev I felt the same way

message 8: by RKRB (new) - rated it 1 star

RKRB Exactly this. I cannot stand Diem and had hope the book might be better than the first. Oh well

Phoebe Took the words outa my mouth! 100% spot on.

Arshia Khan This review resonates so deeply with me, among all the five-star reviews. I'm halfway through the second book and find myself SO annoyed with Diem.

Cassidy Culbreth I yelled at my book multiple times because of the very obvious things she was missing/misinterpreting, the constant interruptions when people were talking to her, and dragging EVERYTHING out with Henri. This girl has no business being a queen because she feels like ab emotionally immature idiot.

Hazel I started reading book 2 hoping for a character growth but

message 13: by Janie (new) - rated it 1 star

Janie Porrez I’m 63% into the book and I am struggling! It’s just…not good. It reads like a YA and it kind of reminds me of From Blood and Ash with the whole Descended/Ascended thing. Diem in book one was decent and worth rooting for but who the hell is she in this book? Just insufferable. And the constant interruption when you think something big is going to be revealed!!!! Ughhh…I rarely DNF books so I’m going to power through with hopes that it gets better. Glad I’m not alone in feeling this way.

message 14: by Jess (new) - rated it 3 stars

Jess Parsons Thank you - I was starting to feel gaslighted about all the spin and hype on this series. I’m now 68% through book 3 and it’s just as bad. It’s the book equivalent of ‘this meeting could have been an email.’ I have little sympathy or interest in reading about characters who make stupid decisions and learn zero lessons. Plus, it’s just so slow and predictable. If you’re using first person and I can figure it out, your MC should be able to also.

Yasmien Yes, letting the guy go who was attacking (insert vulnerable person/people). Made me respect her far less. That is not okay no matter the person’s back story.

message 16: by Lauren_TXgrl (new)

Lauren_TXgrl Felt the same about Diem in the first book. Thank you for saving me the time not reading the next one.

Christina Same should’ve been about 300 pages shorter so long and drawn out that I struggled to push through even the ending was just too much I don’t think I’ll continue the series book 3 is 1,039 pages 🙄

message 18: by Catherine (new) - added it

Catherine Byerly I agree but want to say book three makes it all worth it

Mishaal I’m currently reading this book, and Diem is so damn pathetic and desperate like omg I can’t even get through the book! How can an FMC be so damn conflicted? One minute she’s recoiling from henris declarations and the next she’s begging him to be king looool!!!!!

message 20: by Pam (new) - rated it 3 stars

Pam Ela Sometimes I think Romantasy authors don’t like women very much with the way their FMCs are all over emotional and illogical.

Kayla Montalto The Henri thing made me so angry, it was solely for the plot that he was even talked about when she was like “you’re gonna be the mortal king” girl-
