** spoiler alert ** 3.5 to 4 stars…

I loved the first book and look forward to the next book. For the majority of this one I was annoyed with the main character. I appreciate good writing that gives a character a chance to grow, but this dragged on for entirely too long. It felt like Diem’s naivety then numbness was a huge stall tactic which felt like a lack of overall progress in the story in order to squeeze out a 600+ page second book.
She is in denial about everyone and everything. My biggest gripe being Henri. If maybe she had liked him more in the first book and hadn’t been about to decline his proposal then maybe that would have made more sense.
And for the love of the everflame… why was she still helping the Guardians after the fire and they showed up at her door wanting to kill everyone?!
It was predictable- I had clued on to Luther from him uttering he had a secret in the first book- so no surprise there.
But despite the slowest burn ever, and the writer turning Diem into an idiot/b*tch for 75% of this book, I do love Luther’s character and her new found family and enjoyed a lot of their interactions.
