Notes: A lot of empty calories, weak cast (low-personality), a hurry-scurry plot (one easily forgot): low-impact whimsicality.

"Notes:
(1) This is the first Riordan book I ever read. I didn't care for it, and because of that I didn't read another Riordan series for a long time... until people here insisted I did.
- Since then, I've read every series to date.
(2) This is the original version, not the brand-new recording with new narrators coinciding with the upcoming Netflix adaptation.
- No real preference, this is the version my library has."

(1) Wow! I totally understand why they're re-recording these audiobooks!
- Kevin R. Free is fine except for his English accent, which is embarrassing. Granted, he's playing an American imitating his British sister, but it's still super-cringe.
- Katherine Kellgren's English accent is okay, but she sounds like a total Karen, not a teenager. Also, when she "imitates" Americans, you can tell it's her real accent."

"Notes:
(1) Amos: "Manhattan has other problems. Other gods. It's best we stay
separate."
- Our first reference to PJO.
- So, Olympians have no jurisdiction over Brooklyn?
(2) Amos: "Julius released five gods from the Rosetta Stone."
- Five Gods sounds like a burger joint.
(3) Unlike Olympian gods, you don't worship Egyptian deities anymore.
- Probably from public outcry and the previous series were grandfathered in."

"Notes:
(1) Katherine Kellgren's Middle Eastern/Ancient Egyptian accent sounds South Asian.
- I'll give it a pass. Her accent game's been on the whole pretty good. Unlike Kevin R. Free, who's accents range from weak to an assault on the ears.
(2) I wonder if Egyptian gods retain memories of their previous incarnations?
- Like if Isis and Osiris, when they were married and had a son, remember previously being siblings."

"Notes:
(1) '[Desjardins] wouldn’t think twice about turning us into escargots. And the fact that Set had spoken French in my dream—"Bonsoir, Amos." Was that just a coincidence…or was something a lot worse going on?'
- French is the language of evil, apparently.
(2) Carter offering to show Zia the mall and do regular teenager things is ironic.
- He's no expert. Never being able to do that is why he's jealous of Sadie."

"Notes:
(1) Maybe it's just me, but I've noticed a lot of food focus and food talk with this series.
- It's not like kind you get with George R.R. Martin or Suzanne Collins, where you'll get long food lists at meals.
- Here you get the random appearance of a barbecue spread no one's eating, a running joke about the cat goddess eating Friskies, Sadie asking out-of-the-blue why chicken and waffles are so popular, etc..."

"Notes:
(1) Sadie has a crush on Anubis, god of funerals.
- How very goth girl of her.
(2) Remember before, when I said this series focuses inordinately on food?
- Well, the goddess Sekhmet is defeated by a giant vat of salsa.
(3) Every time Amos shows up, Riordan always makes sure to comment on how he's dressed.
- That's because Amos has no personality, and Riordan can only hope to make him superficially interesting."

"Notes:
(1) I daresay the in-text bickering between the two siblings didn't bother me as much this time around.
- Probably since this is an audiobook, and the conceit of this novel, revealed at the end, is it's a transcribed audio recording.
- In other words, it's meant to be listened to.
(2) Being less irritating aside, I think nearly everyone would agree, this is still the least of Riordan's modern mythology series."

Thank you very much, Chloe! I appreciate the kind words. Believe me, if I'm good at all, it's just practice and repetition. My earliest reviews here are nothing to write home about 😅

I like your reviews. They are always straightforward and honest 🙌🙌"
Thanks, Gissia! Very kind of you to say. Yes, definitely a lot of emotions here. Having firm opinions about a book going into a read, or in this case a re-read, definitely complicates things. Though, I think I kept decent perspective about things :)
