well, folks. it's with great sadness that i inform you that when you're asked "when did you know you were seeing emma's downfall" you can tell them september 1, 2024.

today i begin the project that will surely bring about my mortal end.

on this day, elle and i will read one chapter of tolstoy's war and peace, and then we will do that again tomorrow, and the next day, and the next day, and so on and so forth for the following 357 days, shaking our heads to show we disagree with war and nodding to show we agree with peace.

welcome to project long classics like you've never seen it before.

(because this book has 361 chapters, and because goodreads has a character limit, i'll only be updating this periodically. don't worry. you'll see me daily in other places annoying the sh*t out of you.)

rue emma i need motivation to read this 😭

ellemelnikova As most of Russian high school students I had to read it as an inevitable part of Literature class and again, as most of the students I shamelessly skipped through the War parts. Still had an A for the class!

Rachael Adam Enjoy :)

message 6: by Kateryna (new)

Kateryna Knyaz it's just really sad to see this work popular among westerns - tolstoy held quite imperialistic views and there's nothing particularly mysterious or intellectual about russian literature — most of it is just imperialistic propaganda, though it takes a keen eye to see it

Chelsea Sue I started my slow read of this in January (will finish end of December)…. you are in for some DRAMA.

message 8: by Callie (new) - added it

Callie Tolstoys tirades against Napoleon and his anti-great-man theories of history are chapters that no one should be subjected to. But the peace bits can get pretty fun and soapy.
