before i read lori m. lee's forest of souls, i've never known or read about the hmong culture, its lores and myths. in pahua and the soul stealer, the same culture is being explored but through the lens of pahua who had no shamanistic powers other than being able to see spirits since she was a little girl. pahua accidentally caused an angry spirit to escape its tethers to the haunted bridge which caused the spirit to steal her younger brother's soul. to rescue her brother, pahua goes on an adventure with a slightly snide girl and pahua's best friend, a cat spirit. most of the time things feels impossible since pahua is constantly having an information overload. it didn't help when others question why she isn't aware of her hmong culture and the shamanistic learnings. she wasn't expecting herself to have a critical role in the grand scheme of things. overall, i had great fun with pahua. she isn't the most confident shaman warrior you would know now, but the way she cared for her friends and her family members, it showed a lot of potential for pahua to be a leader.
