it was amazing
bookshelves: science-fiction

I'm thrilled with these stories. Ted Chiang approaches science fiction with great care, demonstrating a high authority on various subjects from biology to linguistics. These stories feel particularly relevant now, and each of them provokes thoughtful reflection. Since I'm most concerned about questions of determinism and free will, I'll particularly note the story 'Story of Your Life'. The story is very elegant. It's about language, memory, time, and structured perfectly in line with its main idea. And that profound layer that turns it into an existential parable about embracing one's path simply made me fall in love with it.

Quotes Dmitry Liked

Ted Chiang
“My message to you is this: pretend that you have free will. It's essential that you behave as if your decisions matter, even though you know they don't. The reality isn't important: what's important is your belief, and believing the lie is the only way to avoid a waking coma. Civilization now depends on self-deception. Perhaps it always has.”

Yeah, I've seen Villeneuve's movie twice too, a great adaptation that complements the main story perfectly.
