I need a way to rate the book and then a way to separately rate the edition I got. I have the audio I got from OverDrive and the gain is so low that with the recording turned up all the way, my speakers turned up all the way and going into my computers audio controls and jacking them up all the way I could barely hear it. Recording value -1 star.

The book is a return to the world of the original Shannara trilogy though much later. magic is outlawed and practically gone (funny how often that seems to happen in "fantasy worlds") Our hero(es) are tasked with saving the world, by bringing magic back, by finding the Sword of Shannara. (Hey just because that's how this whole series started don't knock it. When you get a good plot idea [or find a good plot idea] like "recovering a magic sword" use it as often as possible....right?)

Anyway, did you get that? It's sort of a multilevel quest. They have to bring back magic to save the world, but they have to find the Sword of Shannara to bring back magic. Well, to find the truth about magic and saving the world.

Now if you find that a bit convoluted, "shame on you how dare you criticize a classic work of fantasy"? At least that's the reaction I tend to get when i express opinions like that.

Go figure.

And by the way...someone's pretty ungrateful as there was already a quest to find the Sword of Shannara and when it was found someone obviously didn't take care of it, AND it seems they've lost the Elf Stones to!!!!

We just can't have nice things....

Not a bad book. If you get the audio I got, good luck on actually being able to hear it however.

Richard I do love these books Brooks is one of those authors who I can admit in the past I've felt could do no wrong, but I've matured past that stage :P I can agree with the annoyance in rehashing a plot that's already been done once and I can now see it for the way to keep a series going longer than it needed to that it is. I have always found myself really invested in the stories Brooks writes though except maybe this latest set of books.

Mike (the Paladin) I'm not really annoyed as the "quest for lost magic sword/magic item" is a stable/staple in fantasy lit. It just struck my funny as that's how the series got started and here when he goes back to the more traditional type fantasy story in Shanarra...someone lost the sword again.

I think my sense of humor got the best of me.

Amy I just started this on audio book, read by John Lee. His style of reading is hard to follow. I have to turn up the sound and the speed just to concentrate on his words. ugh. I hope he doesn't continue reading the rest of the series.

William Middleton Richard, Mike and Amy: thanks for review and comments. Me: if I move on to other books (trilogies are my FAVORITES), I don't mind so much when I come back and an author rehashes old plots

Mike (the Paladin) I don't really either simply on that alone. I think a lot depends on how the "re-use" is handled. To each their on novels of course. We won't all like the same thing.

SuperDocMario I haven’t read much fiction x 25 years. So I restarted with way of kings and finishing off words of radiance. But thinking of going back to my roots. I read the original trilogy back in the late 80s. This series sounds like a good way to get back into Terry Brooks.

Mike (the Paladin) I never really got deeply involved in Brooks' writing. I've read a few.
