Everything was just too focused on killing him that we never got his perspective. Alina was so into Bhagra's yapping about how terrible he is. :(

Especially the story regarding the Black Hericate.
I don't why, I think the Darkling was telling the truth. I really do.

And in the end? Remember how Alina was acting? Like, a little dark and I dunno, evil?

(view spoiler)[Well, I dunno. I guess I just totally figured if a guy has no remorse killing a whole village full of people, how would he be able to love? Where's his conscious? How stone-cold is his heart?

I'm not sure about Alina x Darkling now, but I definitely love the Darkling as a character. And I'm totally up for redemption - because, like you, I won't be able to stand it if the Darkling dies. (Even though logic and morals say he deserves to.) I'd rather he just go to prison and stay in isolation for the rest of his life. (Which, if you think about it, is probably worse than death ...)

Hmmm, maybe. I'm just not sure, though. I think if something evil were inside him, he'd be like "I love you Alina!" and then like, "No! Stay away! I'm evil!" You know, giving mixed messages. But he's pretty consistent. I just think centuries (since he's the Black Heretic and all) of power and greed has gotten to him and he's pretty ... well, dark now.

But it makes sense. There's definitely something between the Darkling and Alina, past the attraction. That sense of power, eh? Who knows? Maybe you're right. Maybe there's some evil bug living inside him. :o But what if the only way to kill that evil bug is kill the host? OH THE HORROR

(view spoiler)[Hmmm, I liked Mal in S&B, but yeah, after reading S&S, I just wasn't feeling it. He wasn't supportive, he was too whiny, he didn't understand Alina's circumstances and was too busy wanting to leave everything behind for a safe, little cottage out there somewhere. *waves vaguely*

He didn't understand that Alina had a mission to complete, that she wasn't just doing this by choice, but by force.

AND HE WASN'T SUPPORTIVE.

So, yeah. I liked Mal in the first book, but not loved, and the way he acted in the second just made me like ... zzzzzzz out.

I had to post this as a reply because im sure nobody will actually read my post so sorry about this:::::
(view spoiler)[To be honest, i cant wait for this book, after reading Siege and Storm and seeing the last page say that Ruin And Rising will be coming out in 2014, i had to come check the date on Goodreads. (Not that much of a spoiler but...) [ and although its so far away from being released, by far the weirdest part to me is the people who want the Darkling and Alina to be together.... i mean honestly, for about 10 pages in shadow and bone i thought they were going to be the end couple but that was pretty much wiped out. Moving on to the "Younger Prince", he, although seems like a nice guy and a great choice, it doesn't make sense.... fully introduce a character in a second book then have the main character(As two other vying relationships are going on) end up with him? although it is possible it is highly unrealistic and would probably drop the book by a star. Moving on to the obvious choice, Mal and Alina, name one book (Best seller/top book) where the main character and the first person she seemed to have a relationship with did not end together.(That excludes gale due to he didn't even get to finish the sentence and they were more like friends in the first place). Also, they've known each other since kids and Alina has always looked up to Mal as they grew up, those types of bonds don't just disappear (As you saw at the end of Siege and Storm). Even moving further, Mal has managed to hunt down both of the (Going to call it "attachments" due to mind drawing a blank), and according to my guess, he will find the pheonix (Firebird) and [ either through the (Attatchment) or some other form, gain some sort of power OR he may end up being bound to AlinA(Sort of like her and the Darkling) and through that, be able to use some of Alinas power or his own in some way, shape, or form. Hi Eiko! Awe thats alright! Well basically, Racy means typically sexually entertaining, or just simply sexy.
A fan tweeted her saying that they wanted a sexy/love/romantic scene between The Darkling and Alina and Ms. Bardugo replied by saying (as a joke) that she's thinking of renaming the last book from (the real name) Ruin and Rising to Ruin and Racy. Basically saying that she most probably has some romantic scenes planned in the upcoming book.
Although she hasn't specified with who. :)

Hi Aqsa, thank you so much for your explanation, and of course for having patience on my ignorance. I definitely wouldn't mind a few 'racy' things between the Darkling and Alina, I happen to root for that pair as well ;) the second book had some stuff like that between the Darkling and Alina, though if it was dream or not, we won't know until the third one right?

I'm absolutley Team Darkling, and i'm agree with you Aqsa, i think that he could have something that makes him bad, because we can see another side of him in The Tailor (except for what he did at the end of S&S to Genya). So yeah, my heart would break in two if the Darkilng dies. And idk, i'm really hoping to see the Darkling with Alina at the end. (And i'm waiting for that 'racy' scenes of A+D).

I just finished the second book... And I just learned the 3rd book is not out yet. *screams and bangs head on desk*
I get what so many of you are saying about the Darkling. It's not a surprise to find yourself rooting for him... In spite of all the evil. There is something hopelessly romantic about his longing for Alina. That, paired up with the fact that the most passionate scenes in the series belong to the two of them make it easy to understand Darklina.
However, what I don't understand is why we haven' t really been able to "see" more of the relationship between Mal and Alina. It just seems to me their interactions are few and we know more about their troubles than about their love. It's a classic "show" vs. "tell" dilemma. I know Alina and the Darkling desire and fear each other. Makes for a good tumbling, but a good relationship? I'm not sure.

Can't wait for June.
