I almost gave up on this classic. The reason I didn't is that this was the very first book I added to my want-to-read shelf when I signed up for this account in 2014! It'll bring bad juju if you know what I mean. 😶🌫️
This is a true crime classic published in 1965. In Cold Blood covers a detailed account of the murder, investigation, trial, and execution in the Clutter family murder case. Four members of the Clutter family were bound, gagged, and shot in the head at their Holcomb, Kansas home. Father (also got his throat slashed), mother, and their two youngest high school-age children.
I had to listen to the first hour of the audiobook twice. This is rather strange where the middle of the book held most of my attention, the investigation. I had to remind myself this isn't fiction! The trial was rather exhausting and very detailed. What I found interesting is Capote traveled to Kansas to investigate/research for the book with fellow author and friend Harper Lee. The book was completed and published a few months after the execution of the perpetrators.

I thought he was a very nice gentleman. Soft-spoken. I thought so right up to the moment I cut his throat.

I struggled with it too! But I’m glad to have finally finished it. Sounds like our experience with it was pretty similar.
I felt this way with "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" as far as reminding myself it actually happened. The story was just so wild.
I read this years ago, Kay and I was very overwhelmed so I understand where you are coming from...

Ladies— I too found this a struggle— took me two times to finish— I might have heavily skimmed it too. Yet it was darkly fascinating at times—- even super creepy.
Interesting review, Kay! This was probably the first true crime book I've ever read! Have you seen the movie?

oh yay!! This is one of the few books that I've kept and stays on my favorite books bookcase in my office. I have no recollection of where I got it but my copy is from 1965 and I saw an identical copy a couple of months ago at a used book sale in there "old & rare section" I picked it up just curious what they were asking for it (I don't remember) but I was very tempted to buy it because it had an original newspaper clipping in it about the murders. I kinda regret not buying that. In fact I should see if it ended up selling since it was through an organization I used to volunteer with and try to buy it - though a bit of money for a piece of newspaper.
@Kathryn in FL I didn't know that about The Garden of Good & Evil, I just know I've always heard about it and figured I should read it so I picked it up at the book sale I was just telling Kay about in the post above this. Well, it just moved forward on my TBR shelf.

That's so cool about the first edition AND the newspaper clipping Laurie! Let me know if you find it again or it's already sold. 🥲

I read “In Cold Blood” about 40 years ago. Your review prompted me to check my bookshelf, and my old paperback copy is still there. I don’t recall finding it hard going back then, but I think I would if I tried it again now.

That's awesome to still have your old copy Pat! It's horrific knowing this is real.
