What's this? Unpopular opinion time?
Most of my friends and most of Goodreads love this book. I did not. I read for pleasure. I don't care if reading makes me smart. I don't care if reading makes me pretty. I just want that escape into other worlds.
If I went to this world-I would die from boredom.
I actually like the darker books so I thought this one would sweep me up into the fandom of it. But, alas, it just made me sleep quite well last night.
I didn't even know there was a movie made from it until someone mentioned it while I was reading it.
My hubby would probably like the movie so we may try that at some point. But I ain't in no hurry.
Oh, and for the trolls that I'm sure I will attract with this review.

Love that you're not afraid to risk airing unpopular opinions, Shelby! ;)
Personally, I love this novel, but I think that may be partially because of how different this book was from most graphic novels at the time. I notice most people who sing this book's praises are people who read the book back when it was much newer (and the graphic novel industry hadn't seen the mature storytelling of people like Brian K Vaughan yet), while people who are just now reading it for the first time are more prone to dislike it.
Of course, this begs the question...was Watchmen really that good, or did it just seem like it at the time since few comic books featured that type of mature writing. Considering that even the book's fans have to admit that some parts of it just don't hold up years later, and the movie based on it wasn't overly well-received (even though it was mostly a scene-for-scene recreation of the book), I'd have to say it might just be the latter...
Great honest review, my friend! :)

Thanks buddy!
I think if I'd read it back when it first came out I probably would have appreciated it more. It just seemed like it overtried for me.
I saw that it's even used in college courses and I was like "WTF", then I realized it does serve a purpose-that purpose just wasn't for my reading pleasure. LOL
I have another of this authors books coming from the library Batman: The Killing Joke so I'm interested to see if I like anything else that he has done.

Yep! My thoughts exactly. My husband made me watch the movie a couple years ago. After 30-45 minutes, I was sleeping soundly on the couch. Don't get me wrong. I'm open minded now with all the comic books and movies for I do enjoy many of them. But this was more "wordy" and little action. At least, that's what I experienced duration my short exposure to the movie.

I'll probably snore through it too. It does seem like something my husband would like though. He watches way more movies than I do.

I love me some superhero movies, but this one kind of left me cold. It's not bad; just not all that great either. I saw it on a basic cable channel and it took me a long while to realize that they were blurring the naked blue guy's family jewels. :D

I love superhero movies too. Give me some X-men or Fantastic Four and I'm yelling at the screen.
I think these are super poops. :P
I may have to see those blue jewels..just cuz I is a pervert.

Ha!! Super poops....priceless. And I completely forgot about the censored jewels. I love how a comment or two leads to new ones. ;)
Hahahahaha! This is the very reason I've never done a re-read on this one. I really didn't enjoy it the 1st time around, and I doubt my review would be as nice the second time. LOL!

The author Alan Moore is a nutter. people either like that or they don't; and that's OK :) tbh you may not like too many of his other things because his way of writing isn't sane lol. However Killing Joke has become part of Batman so im glad you're getting that one.

I thought it was pretty good, one of the only graphic novels I've actually enjoyed. I'm not a big fan of the comic book medium, but Watchmen has some interesting stuff going on. Better than most.
But, uh, you're right... I should probably be writing my own damn review...

That because this is not a super hero book / comic / graphic novel / movie; it is an anti hero story. Rorschach is the "hero" of this book, and he's nuts.

Fuck yeah Shelby!! I tried reading this when I was in college because all of the fanboys love it, and at the time I was trying to read more of the list 1000 books to read before you die.
I WAS SO BORED!!! And quite honestly, really offended by this book. Glad I'm not alone in my unpopular opinion!

Sorry it didn't work for you Shelby :) . Why the defensiveness? You didn't like it, and that's fine. I haven't read it and I won't but if I did it doesn't matter if I like it or not, because you wouldn't criticize me badly, yeah? ;) I find it funny people feel bad because of it, it's not like it you were... "attacking" them, is it? Crazy world!
BTW I loved the whole, the combination of gifs and text is fun, it's not easy to achieve a good gifview so I always enjoy reading them ^^.

I get criticized a whole lot on here. I was trying to stop it at the beginning. I actually don't mind when people love a book I hate. Or that I love one they hate. It makes it fun. I just don't like the attacks on reviews. :)

That's bad, everybody can have an opinion :) .
Who the HELL do you think you ARE? Who said you could have an opinion and then put it here and THEN tell other people that your opinion doesn't have to match theirs?
It's like you don't even know how this world works.
I'm getting an army of trolls and we're going to attack you with confusing comments and poor grammar. That'll learn you to go against the grain, you communist.
I have to agree with David way up there. I think this story had a lot more impact 20 years ago. Oh geez...I didn't read this twenty years ago. It was only, like, six. Six years ago, this story was more impactful. Also, it is a stronger tale when you're 22,idealistic, have fresh opinions, and are a bit naive. You know, like I was. Six years ago.
I look forward to your review of Batman: The Killing Joke. I can't tell you how gut-wrenching it was at the time. Now that there is no continuous, logical, real Batman (or any DC) timeline/story, now that anything can happen at any time, it may also be less stabby-to-the-emotions.
But thank goodness these things were written; how much more bubblegum comic could we have taken? This kind of stuff turned illustrated stories from a stupid past time for weird losers into actual literature and made it a more acceptable format. So there's that.
But, again, your review is stupid, I hate you, I wish upon you a plague of locusts, frogs, bloody rain, crying children, dog poop in the yard, and tepid coffee.
Oh! Spoiler alert: The movie is loooong and painful and it has a different ending.
