8. THE MIDDLE EAST: Saudi Arabia: Finding Nouf by Zoë Ferraris
Read 2.10.2013
Review: What a fun and interesting peek into the complexities of Saudi Arabian society! And the struggles of the unlikely crime-solving duo -- a conservative, devout male desert guide and a self-reliant, inquisitive female scientist at the coroner's office -- to uncover the truth in this closed society made this book a fascinating and light read.

9. THE MIDDLE EAST: Iran: The Complete Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi
Read 2.11.2013
Review: Fascinating coming-of-age story/memoir in graphic novel form, set during the Islamic Revolution in Iran. I really enjoyed this eye-opening story of how a young girl and her family try to cope with increasing religious and political repression.

10. EUROPE: Bosnia and Herzegovina: The Cellist of Sarajevo by Steven Galloway
Read 2.14.2013
Review: A vivid, disturbing and moving novel from the Siege of Sarajevo. The three story lines dwell on the extreme challenges daily life (dodging snipers while crossing any street or bridge, lack of food and water, etc), but also explores how people kept hope alive in the midst of demoralization and dehumanization. Highly recommended!
