Anna (lilfox) | 96 comments From Poland beside Joseph Conrad I suggest Ryszard Kapuściński

message 2: by David (new)

David | 4 comments French Polynesia: Omoo and Typee by Herman Melville--granted, not Polynesians, but worth a read.

message 3: by Anna (new)

message 4: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Thanks for posting this at Good Reads.

message 5: by Agnesca (new)

Agnesca | 7 comments For Belgium I suggest Maurice Maeterlinck (don't remember how to make the link for the author but I really wanted to suggest him quickly :))

message 6: by Agnesca (new)

Agnesca | 7 comments And if I may suggest only one book, it would be "Pelléas and Mélisande", my favourite one

message 7: by Pauline (new)

Pauline McGonagle (paulinemc) | 21 comments For Azerbaijan I recommend 'Ali and Nino' by Kurban Said and then 'The Orientalist' which is about the search for true identity of Said!

message 8: by Anna (new)

Anna (lilfox) | 96 comments I had read Orientalist. It's great and saucy.

message 9: by Pauline (new)

Pauline McGonagle (paulinemc) | 21 comments O really? Can you remember author- in case a different one?

message 11: by Pauline (new)

Pauline McGonagle (paulinemc) | 21 comments Tom Reiss- that's the one. Quite controversial and a few other theories out there about real identity of Kurban Said. Thank you.

message 12: by Anna (new)

Anna (lilfox) | 96 comments Yeah, but the story itself is great.

message 13: by Terri (new)

Terri (terrilovescrows) | 13 comments Congo, Democratic Republic of: Larry Devlin: Chief of Station, Congo: Fighting the Cold War in a Hot Zone

One of the attorneys in my office and our CPA were friends with Mr. Devlin for years. When I was reading his book, they would give him reports of my thoughts. He passed away last year unfortunately.

message 14: by Tiia (new)

Tiia Lithuania: Vilnius Poker by Ricardas Gavelis.

message 15: by Shannon SA (new)

Shannon SA Hi Shoshanapnw, thought I'd point out that The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith takes place in Botswana, not Zimbabwe (your 2nd message).

message 16: by Anna (new)

Anna (lilfox) | 96 comments Poland: Henryk Sienkiewicz's With Fire and Sword, The Deluge and Fire in the Steppe.

message 17: by Erma (new)

Erma Odrach | 11 comments Just went through your list of books. Very impressive. Will put it on my list of resources. Thanks!

What a great list! Thanks for sharing your ambitious project. I am adding some of these to my list!

For Belgium, you could try Hugo Claus. I haven't read any of his books, but I've heard he's good. Has anyone here read, for example, the Sorrows of Belgium or Wonder?

message 21: by Sarah (last edited Dec 15, 2009 04:56AM) (new)

Sarah | 2 comments for Hong Kong you could try Gweilo by Martin Booth, White Ghost Girls by Alice Greenway, The Train to Lo Wu by Jess Row (a collection of stories) or that classic story, The World Of Suzy Wong by Richard Mason

message 22: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (mrpixel) | 5 comments Not sure what you think of this, but for Bhutan, I recommend Beyond the Sky and the Earth A Journey into Bhutan by Jamie Zeppa. The author is a Canadian who lived in Bhutan for 2 (or maybe 3 years) and this book is a chronicle of her time there. She ended up living there for many years after the time she chronicles in the book. It is a good book too.

In the first post you mention that you want to read about territories and unrecognized ares. Have you considered about reading about any Native American Tribes? I would suggest Black Elk Speaks, his words are sort of like our sacred words written down.

Thanks for the list I was looking for a book for years that I heard about and read a few pages of in Thailand. After many years of looking, (I couldn't remember the title or the author, just the content) I found the title and author. Thanks for thinking of the world. =)

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

After all of this wonderful reading do you plan on reading a second for each country?

I was also wondering if you kept in mind which were your favorites? I guess 10 places to visit, sort to speak.

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

Island reads just sound so relaxing and adventurous at the same time. I would like to escape soon. I think that reading about a country before you enter the borders is wise. Travel guides are not likely going to tell you to stay away and or why. Even then they can exaggerate this situations.

message 27: by Coqueline (last edited Jan 24, 2010 01:05PM) (new)

Coqueline | 3 comments Hi, I've been a member of this group for ages now but have never posted anything. Your list is really inspiring!

Maybe I have a couple more to suggest:
Kiribati: J. Maarten Troost - The Sex Lives of Cannibals: Adrift in the Equatorial Pacific
Papua New Guinea: Lloyd Jones - Mister Pip
Netherlands: Tessa de Loo - The Twins
Tahiti: Celestine Hitiura Vaite - Frangipani
Tibet: T. Lobsang Rampa - The Third Eye

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

Great list. There are several I want to look into tomorrow. I'm off to class right now.

message 29: by Erika (new)

Erika Balogh | 1 comments I would like to add a great book from Hungary: Géza Gárdony: Slave of the Huns

message 30: by Ilona (new)

Ilona Stefanova | 1 comments I recommend from Bulgaria: Aleko Konstantionv - Bai Ganyo: Incredible Tales of a Modern Bulgarian

message 31: by Asif (new)

Asif | 2 comments Great idea!
Pakistan: Maps for Lost Lovers by Nadeem Aslam is one of the best novels I've read in my life and certainly amongst the best written. His prose style is gorgeous and dense.

Highly recommended...

That sounds like a great book, Asif!

message 33: by Galicius (last edited Mar 02, 2016 01:09PM) (new)

Galicius I have been reading for more than fifty years and keeping a list of books I read for about forty of those years. I always kept a note on the original language that the book was written. When I found your group through one of your members I thought it would be good to get ideas on books from countries I never read. Thanks.

message 34: by Aly (new)

Aly | 1 comments This one is from Uruguay, one of my favorite novels from Latin American literature, and about the sorrows of dictatorship and exile: Primavera con una esquina rota (Spring with a Broken Corner), by Mario Benedetti.

message 35: by Galicius (new)

Galicius I would like to know when you propose a particular book from your country of interest to find out the motive why you recommend that title. The reasons in this listing are rare from I see. Why do you want this group to read your suggested book? Please tell us. A title and author may not mean anything to me. I looked back on my rather long reading history and see that I read at least one book from about thirty countries, most in translation into English. At this point it would be probably hard to find the precise reason why I read a particular title, except for obvious countries that represent my background or educational interest.

Thank you for giving us information about your suggestion.

message 37: by Luísa (new)

Luísa | 1 comments Brazil: I recommend reading Jorge Amado. My favorite book by him so far is called "Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon".

message 39: by Asif (new)

Asif | 2 comments From Pakistan, The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid
