Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments FIND YOUR FLIGHT CHALLENGE
Duration: January 1, 2020 - December 31, 2020

Just like a good winery or brewery can create a flight of beverages that complement each other, we are going to explore flights, literary that is, of fantasy, spirits, or whatever gets you interested. There are several ways to create your literary flight:

Option 1 - Choose a location
Want to explore a specific location? Great, find books related to that place to create your flight. Example - I'm traveling to Paris, so I want to delve into books that explore the city. So I could read My Life in France by Julia Child, The Paris Wife by Paula McLean, and How Paris Became Paris by John deJean = 1 Flight

Option 2 - Choose a Starter Book
Ever read a book that sends you spiraling down a rabbit hole exploring the author, subject matter, or other books? Great, then this flight is for you! Example - I want to finally tackle Beloved by Toni Morrison. So, I would read that book, then also could read Toni Morrison: a Biography by Stephanie Li, Sula by Toni Morrison, and Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates = 1 flight

Option 3 - Choose a subject
Want to learn a bit more about a time period or a specific person? Great, choose your subject matter, then curate your flight to learn about that subject matter. Example - I want to learn more about hurricanes. So I would curate my list to include The Great Hurricane: 1938 by Cherie Burns, Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward, and The Perfect Storm by Sebastian Junger.

To participate, simply decide how many flights that you want to accomplish this year and let us know. Each flight must consist of at least 3 books. You can also add in how many total books that you intend to read for the challenge. However you choose to connect the dots or curate your list is entirely up to you.

Happy Reading!

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments How to Participate

1. Post here telling the Challenge Leader that you'd like to join the challenge. You can choose your books for the challenge at the beginning, or add them as you go. You can join a challenge at any time, as long as the challenge is still active. You must choose a goal for the challenge.

2. Whenever you finish a book for the challenge, post here and let the challenge leader know so they can update your progress.
Please be sure to post the number of books and flights, you have completed every time you post an update. The Challenge Leader is not able to keep track for you because of the number of participants in the challenge.

3. Some members choose to update their original post with their progress to keep track of their challenge more easily, but make sure to also post a new message so the Challenge Leader knows to go look at your original post. In this case, please indicate your progress before you list your books. You can look at how other members report their progress to find a strategy that works well for you.

Example:
message 32 updated! 2/25 books read!

For more information about how challenges work, check out this thread or ask your challenge leader.

PS. Please do not delete posts! It makes updating very confusing for the Moderators! If you decide to leave the challenge, please just let us know. You can edit your original post to say {redacted}. Thank you!

I'm going to try for 3 flights, books in each flight TBD.

0 / 3 flights
0 / 11 books

Option 1 - Choose a location: Korea. I lived there for a year but don't feel like I read enough about the country and its history to do it justice.

1. Pachinko
2. Escape from Camp 14: One Man's Remarkable Odyssey from North Korea to Freedom in the West
3. The Island of Sea Women

Option 2 - Choose a starter book: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. I adored this book and want to read at least one book by some of the authors mentioned within the book.

1. Jane Austen
2. Emily Bronte
3. Charles Dickens

Option 3 - Choose a subject: Refugees, Immigration....
Millions of people each year are immigrants, refugees, displaced persons, etc. Their voices should be heard. I want to read five books about people who fit into any of these categories.

1. I Am Malala The Story of the Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban by Malala Yousafzai - completed 1/13/20
2.
3.
4.
5.

Fr. Andrew (nitesead) I'll do all three flight options, one flight each. (But I'm taking train/boat...I *hate* flying)

Option 1 - Choose a location
I'd like to visit my birthplace, Germany. I was born there in a U.S. army hospital, but we left when I was still a baby and I have no memories.
1. I need to brush up on the language, so why not: Schottenfreude: German Words for the Human Condition by Ben Schott
2. I was born in Bremerhaven, a northwestern port city which was part of West Germany, back during the Cold War. So I want to make sure to visit East Germany as well. How about two books related to that area?
The Wall Jumper: A Berlin Story by Peter Schneider (about the Berlin wall)
and
3. The Quest for Christa T. by Christa Wolf (was banned in East Berlin)
4. While I'm at the Black Forest, I'll sit under a tree and read a book I've been meaning to read since high school but never did, Siddhartha by German author Hermann Hesse. FINISHED 1/15/2020

Option 2 - Choose a Starter Book
I'm diving back into poetry and plan to read a LOT of it in 2020. My starter book will be:
1. Night Sky with Exit Wounds by Ocean Vuong (the book of poetry that I bought a year or two ago but haven't yet read)
2. On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong (his debut novel, which came out in 2019, and I'm very excited to read it. My mom asked me if there were any books I'd like for Christmas, and this is the one I mentioned.)
3. A Garland: The Poems and Fragments of Sappho translated by J.G.F. Powell (because Ocean Vuong is a queer poet, let's read another queer poet!)

Option 3 - Choose a subject
I'd like to learn more about universal salvation theology. It's a controversial subject, and as I'm studying for holy orders in an Old Catholic church, I want to read as much theology as possible, and this concept interests me. Three that have caught my eye are:
1. Heaven's Doors: Wider Than You Ever Believed! by George W. Sarris (This one looks to be a simplified approach, but will be good for getting an overview of the subject)
2. Dare We Hope That All Men Be Saved? by Hans Urs von Balthasar (a specifically Roman Catholic approach to the subject, and I expect it to be quite nuanced.)
3. That All Shall Be Saved: Heaven, Hell, and Universal Salvation by David Bentley Hart (a new book that takes a pro-universalist approach)

FIND YOUR FLIGHT CHALLENGE

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Just completed the first book of my first flight (Feminism and Christianity) - God Land: A Story of Faith, Loss, and Renewal in Middle America by Lyz Lenz. I absolutely love this book! I feel so incredibly seen right now - everything that I've experienced in church as a child, as a teen, in Christian college and law school in the midwest, and as an adult, including my absence from the faith, feels very validated. It was not all in my head, and I'm not alone. Definitely worth reading! 5 stars

Suzanne (esmerelda1) | 439 comments 2020 Reading Challenge
Find Your Flight - 2020
Duration:
January 1, 2020 - December 31, 2020

Progress: 10 out of 15

Just like a good winery or brewery can create a flight of beverages that complement each other, we are going to explore flights, literary that is, of fantasy, spirits, or whatever gets you interested. There are several ways to create your literary flight:

To participate, simply decide how many flights that you want to accomplish this year and let us know. Each flight must consist of at least 3 books. You can also add in how many total books that you intend to read for the challenge. However you choose to connect the dots or curate your list is entirely up to you.

Happy Reading!

Option 1 - Choose a location: TEXAS:
Want to explore a specific location? Great, find books related to that place to create your flight. Example - I'm traveling to Paris, so I want to delve into books that explore the city. So I could read My Life in France by Julia Child, The Paris Wife by Paula McLean, and How Paris Became Paris by John deJean = 1 Flight
1) Pride Mates by Jennifer Ashley - ***** - 1/2/2020 - 304 Pages
2) Fancy Pants by Susan Elizabeth Phillips - *** - 3/13/2020 - 495 Pages
3) Lady Be Good by Susan Elizabeth Phillips - ***** - 3/28/2020 - 384 Pages
4) Call Me Irresistible by Susan Elizabeth Phillips - **** - 5/1/2020 - 385 Pages
5)
Pride Mates (Shifters Unbound, #1) by Jennifer Ashley Fancy Pants (Wynette, Texas, #1) by Susan Elizabeth Phillips Lady Be Good (Wynette, Texas, #2) by Susan Elizabeth Phillips Call Me Irresistible (Wynette, Texas, #5) by Susan Elizabeth Phillips

Option 2-Choose a Starter Book:
Ever read a book that sends you spiraling down a rabbit hole exploring the author, subject matter, or other books? Great, then this flight is for you! Example - I want to finally tackle Beloved by Toni Morrison. So, I would read that book, then also could read Toni Morrison: a Biography by Stephanie Li, Sula by Toni Morrison, and Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates = 1 flight
1) When They Call You a Terrorist: A Black Lives Matter Memoir by Patrisse Khan-Cullors - ***** - 8/21/2020 - 257 Pages
2) Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
3)
4)
5)
When They Call You a Terrorist A Black Lives Matter Memoir by Patrisse Khan-Cullors

Option 3 - Choose a subject: Memoirs/Graphic Novels
Want to learn a bit more about a time period or a specific person? Great, choose your subject matter, then curate your flight to learn about that subject matter. Example - I want to learn more about hurricanes. So I would curate my list to include The Great Hurricane: 1938 by Cherie Burns, Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward, and The Perfect Storm by Sebastian Junger.
1) Ethel and Ernest by Raymond Briggs - ***** - 1/3/2020 - 104 Pages
2) A Fire Story by Brian Fies - ***** - 2/4/2020 - 154 Pages
3) Something New: Tales from a Makeshift Bride by Lucy Knisley - ***** - 2/18/2020 - 292 Pages
4) Hostage by Guy Delisle - **** - 2/20/2020 - 436 Pages
5) First Year Out: A Transition Story by Sabrina Symington - ***** - 3/14/2020 - 100 Pages
Ethel and Ernest by Raymond Briggs A Fire Story by Brian Fies Something New Tales from a Makeshift Bride by Lucy Knisley Hostage by Guy Delisle First Year Out A Transition Story by Sabrina Symington
