THE LEGENDARY THRILLER THAT CREATED DR HANNIBAL LECTER

Will Graham was a brilliant profiler of criminals for the FBI - until he suffered terrible injuries in the process of capturing Dr Hannibal 'the Cannibal' Lecter.

Years later, a serial killer nicknamed 'the Tooth Fairy' is massacring entire families each full moon. With the FBI desperate for progress, Will reluctantly agrees to consult. But he soon realises that he alone can't crack the case; he needs the help of the only mind even better than his own at understanding the mentalities of psychopaths.

But Hannibal is playing his own twisted game from the asylum for the criminally insane. Will isn't alone in getting advice from the cannibal. So is the Tooth Fairy - the man haunted by visions of the murderous Red Dragon...

Starting this one a day early :)

First quarter - (view spoiler)[I have seen The Silence of the Lambs film years ago but can't really remember too much about it rather than the main, almost infamous, plot points. I was surprised though to find out this first book in the series seems to follow on from Hannibal's reign, not begin with it. There are mentions of his previous assaults and now the focus is on a different crime - that of a serial killer who bites his victims, nicknamed The Tooth Fairy. I wonder how Hannibal is going to link back in.

Will Graham has been forced back into this world and I feel sorry for him and his wife, now their peaceful existence has been interrupted. He does seem to provide a different perspective to the crime, though. (hide spoiler)]

Second quarter - (view spoiler)[I don't often like when thrillers provide a perspective from the killer as well as those attempting to find him, as it ruins a lot of the suspense for me. Here though it really works. The killer's small chapter detailing his 'home movie' was chilling! I'm eager to learn how they will catch him with so little clues to go off of.

The Tooth Fairy and Hannibal the Cannibal are in contact! I'm not even half way through and this book feels like it has moved so fast already. I'm enjoying this even more than I thought I would. Actually, 'enjoying' probably isn't the right word. Some of this is too chilling and twisted to 'enjoy'. It is definitely darker than I had anticipated. Modern thrillers seem to push the boundaries of morbidity so I wasn't expecting it, given the age of this one. (hide spoiler)]

Third quarter - (view spoiler)[Police procedurals aren't usually my favourite thing to read and so my attention did slip a little from the first part, but as Wills' perspectives were intersected with The Red Dragon's perspective, it maintained my engagement. I could see no way they were going to pin the crimes to his person when his link to the murdered families, through their home videos, was such a tenuous one! (hide spoiler)]

Fourth quarter - (view spoiler)[I feel a little let down with that ending. At first I was SUPER dissapointed when he shot himself and the following pages just seemed to be about the characters going back to their ordinary lives. I didn't see the twist coming though and it did take me by surprise to see him attack Will. I still would have preferred an ending where he was caught, though. I know they were getting very close to that but I felt I was cheated from seeing the hard-work all piece together and the characters make the full discovery themselves. Hannibal was such a small part of the story too and I thought we would see his character far more throughout. I'm actually excited to continue on and get to his story-line. Every time he was featured I felt chills! (hide spoiler)]

I am about to finish chapter 10 and I have no distractions today. I started with the audio book and loved the narration but he missed half the first. I changed to a new one and it isn't bad but I like the first one so much better. I might have to see it if it was just the first chapter or the whole book.

(view spoiler)[Reid from Criminal minds reminds me a lot of Will Graham. I wonder of the writers of the show got the inspiration from this book. I am right there with you about the perspective from the killer but somehow it does work with this book. I liked that we got into his mind and how he thinks. And of course I keep picturing Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter. I am liking the writing style of Thomas Harris, it is easy to follow and read. I am not struggling to understand even with law enforcement and medical terms. (hide spoiler)]

I would love to continue and I should be finish with the book today or tomorrow.

I've not seen Criminal Minds but I completely agree with you about Anthony Hopkins. I can't differentiate between the two, anymore! It is such an infamous role.

(view spoiler)[ I agree with you about the ending , I did feel cheated. I do wish that there was more to Hannibal then we read but I have a feeling in the next book we will see a lot more. I don't now if you felt the ending was a little rushed or if it was just me. I did like how the book did keep me guessing. I also loved that we got to see the inside if the mind of the killer. Now I need to watch a funny movie or video to clear my head lol. (hide spoiler)]
