With Halloween coming up, what's the spookiest book on your shelf? You know, the one you'd stick in the freezer a la Rachel & Joey in Friends?

Mine for this year is The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon as I'm sure you all are sick of hearing.

Lexie mentioned an old favorite of mine, The Halloween Tree by Ray Bradbury.

But I've got to say my all-time Freezer Book is It by Stephen King. I can't even own a copy. Especially the earlier paperback release with Pennywise the Clown on the cover. I borrowed it from my cousin and it was going to be a while before I could return it to him, so after reading it I took all the books off my shelf and bricked it up in the back of the bookcase (you know, so it couldn't get out). (This was years before Friends was on the air.)

It has always been a book I could never even think of picking up. Actually i lie. ANY BOOK by Stephen King or John Saul automatically gets thrown into the nearest 'to trade in' book box I have (because friends who weren't really friends bought such books for me since I liked to read, figuring one book was as good as any other) because the two of them give me nightmares just from their backcovers more often then not. hell I'm cringing in horror right now thinking about them

They describe things in such a detailed way (visually and psychologically) that I am petrified. I have a similiar reaction to R.L. Stine's Fear Street Saga of books. Not the Fear Street individuals (I loved the Cheerleader ones), but the historical 'How Fear Street Came To Be' books. In The Betrayal, I think, there's a scene where a person is killed by stuffing uncooked bread into their mouth, gagging them and binding them to a woodstove with the grill open. The bread expanded, as yeast does, and slowly BAKED inside that person's mouth, suffocating them and all sorts of other things I vaguely remember in a 'block this memory for sanity reasons' sort of way.

And less spooky, but equally terrifying, is a book called Return to the Secret Garden by Susan Moody. The character assassinations and plot butchering (not to mention relationship hacking) that woman did to a beloved tale of my youth still gives me horrors when I hear a beloved classic has a sequel.

Sorry I can't read any books that go in freezer, they all give me nightmares. Mine have to be fantasy or Romance not scary.

This is a little off topic but I have to ask have you read Montana Sky, its supposed to be a romance and it does have it in it but it also has a very twisted murderer, it makes my stomach turn when they talk about what he does to his victims. Maybe it just me, But still I can't seem to put it down.

Funny! I always thought after I saw that Friends episode which book I'd put in the freezer. I couldn't come up with anything. Books don't freak me out. Movies don't either. Put me in a halloween haunted house though and that is a different story!
